Be a Mission Voice! With Catholic of the world, we are called to offer our prayers and our generous financial support, through the Society for the

Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of Jesus. Today we “speak up” through our prayers and personal sacrifices for our brothers and sisters in the

Missions. As little as $25, help support a catechist for a month in Latin America.

PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As you know, to make the bulletin deadline, I write my columns a week before they are

published. So, as I write this, I am still on retreat. It has been rather easy to be silent – I’m the only one in the whole retreat house! Every once in a while someone comes in and they see my red retreat badge and know not to talk to me, unless I initiate the conversation. To be silent from the digital world has been another matter – and somewhat more difficult. After attending and taking to heart Dr. Kersting’s presentation on the addiction of social media, I would have to agree with him that it’s easier to be silent in word than with fingers on a digital device. I made it out of Houston before Imelda came into town – but she and the airline’s need for mechanical repairs kept me grounded for quite some time before leaving. So, I left quite aware of what was happening in the weather department. So many people have emailed and texted concerned about our parish – both the facilities as well as the people. While I may be on retreat, my heart, united to the Lord’s, was also united to all of you. I asked for and received updates twice on Thursday and once on Friday – just enough to let my heart be at peace. Thanks be to Our Lady of Prompt Succor who continues to intercede for us and protect us. Unfortunately while we came out dry, the news for St. Martha’s in Kingwood is not as good. I mention them specifically because the ACTS team of St. Martha’s was our missioning team; thus, our ACTS community has a special connection with them. For the second time in 4 months, their school flooded. Before this year’s floods, the property had never flooded. Along with the school, as you know better than I, many homes were flooded and people once more were displaced.

How can that be? How could we flood two years ago while never having flooded before? We, as Christians, pray for protection and assist those in need being a people for others. But, the reality of all this “new” flooding is something grounded and found in science. Yes, we are building too much and covering the porous ground with concrete. However, retention and detention ponds aren’t enough to stop the flooding. But, science shows us more. We have to stop politicizing the truth and the facts of science. Why do we, especially as Houstonians, enjoy the science of space exploration, gas and oil exploration and the expansion of science in the field of medicine? And, yet, when we turn to the science of the earth and its climate, many say it’s a hoax and there are no facts to prove a climate change. Glaciers are melting, the oceans are rising, the temperature of the earth is warmer, winters are warmer and summers are just hot. Those are facts. Scientists are warning us; but we don’t want to be inconvenienced and thus, we continue on the path of destruction. Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato si / Praise Be To You,” was greeted with jeers because the Pope was speaking about saving the environment, global warming and climate change. But he also spoke to us about preserving the gift of this earth, our home. St. Ignatius teaches us that God is to be found in every all of creation – including Mother Earth. While policies can assist us, each of us must become more aware of our individual responsibility to protect what God has given us. In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth…

The count down is on. The Fall Festival is next week! For the Fall Festival to be successful, we need all hands (and feet) on deck. Have you gotten your raffle tickets? Have you purchased them? The profits made from the raffle tickets are a big part of the overall success of the Fall Festival. We are also in need of items for the both the silent and live auctions. If you have a timeshare – or a cottage home somewhere that you could donate for a week and would be willing to put in the auction, please contact the auction committee. All ministries have been asked to submit a basket of items for the silent auction – again, this is a great money maker at the auction. With our new electronic bidding system for the silent auction items, you can bid from the comfort of your living room, kitchen or from the mall! We will also need you to work in the booths both Saturday and Sunday. I am sure that we need canned soft drinks, bottled water, baked goods, prizes, etc. Your help only adds to the profits of the festival. Remember, that we are now paying off the mortgage of the Gonzaga center and like your mortgage bill, ours comes every month. Unlike yours, ours is for $50,000 a month!! Make plans to bring out the whole family next week. Invite the neighbors and your relatives. Mark your calendars and join with your fellow parishioners on Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th for another momentous Fall Festival.

With my prayers for dynamic disciples,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING Sunday, Sep 29, 2019 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Try a little tenderness We hear folks wish out loud for more patience. In church circles, many voice the ambition to be more devout, loving, or kind. Cultivating a spirit of gentleness, however, is rare on the wish list. Why the oversight? Gentleness makes it onto a lot of Saint Paul’s checklists, including his nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. Paul was sensitive to this virtue, perhaps because he could be pretty rough on fellow Christians who disappointed him! What would happen if you spent one day choosing the softer look, the more careful word, the gentler touch? Try it and find out.

TODAY'S READINGS: Amos 6:1a, 4-7; 1 Timothy 6:11-16; Luke 16:19-31 (138). “Pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.”

Monday, Sep 30, 2019 MEMORIAL OF JEROME, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Consider the source When you make a photocopy of a photocopy, the original becomes harder to see, read, and understand. Saint Jerome, the great linguist, experienced this with the Septuagint, a Greek version of the Hebrew Old Testament. As the use of Latin spread with the Holy Roman Empire—edging out the Greek used by early Christians—the church began to rely on Latin translations of the Septuagint. Jerome thought we could do better. He went back to the original Hebrew, mining the texts as Jesus and other Jews knew them. Not everyone agreed with Jerome. Saint Augustine preferred the Greek. Arguments ensued; a compromise evolved. A strength of church teaching that benefits us today: Differences of opinion can birth a better outcome.

TODAY'S READINGS: Zechariah 8:1-8; Luke 9:46-50 (455). “An argument arose among the disciples.”

Tuesday, Oct 01, 2019 MEMORIAL OF THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS, VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Sailing toward the eternal shore How would you describe your life’s journey? Thérèse of Lisieux—Carmelite nun, saint, and doctor of the church—imagined her life journey as sailing the sea. Reflecting one evening on the sun setting across the sea at Trouville, she wrote of how the sun left a “luminous trail.” “It was to me the image of God’s grace shedding its light across the path the little white-sailed vessel had to travel.” She committed herself to following Jesus “in order to travel peacefully towards the eternal shore." What image would you use? And how do you experience God with you along the way?

TODAY'S READINGS: Zechariah 8:20-23; Luke 9:51-56 (456). “I too will go to seek the Lord.”

Wednesday, Oct 02, 2019 MEMORIAL OF THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS Stand by me Today the church gives a shout-out to guardian angels. “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him [or her] to life,” is how the Catholic catechism puts it. Whether you picture a comforting winged angel at your shoulder, or see your guardian angel as more of a metaphor for God’s loving care, great comfort can be found by relaxing into this

protection. TODAY'S READINGS: Nehemiah 2:1-8 (457); Matthew 18:1-5, 10 (650). "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."

Thursday, Oct 03, 2019 MEMORIAL OF THEODORE GUERIN, RELIGIOUS (SAINT THEODORA) Discipleship with backbone “Sisters, let’s pack our bags,” Mother Guerin’s community responded when a clueless bishop locked her up and tried to excommunicate her for challenging his need to control. Guerin inspired loyalty; the first sisters bonded after landing on the raw Indiana frontier, speaking only French. As if hunger, overturned stagecoaches, financial hardships, and terrible health weren’t trials enough, the bishop believed he owned them. After epic battles, Guerin finally triumphed. A simple frame shed eventually became Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, the country’s oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women. Learn how Guerin’s college empowers students at the website: .edu.

TODAY'S READINGS: Nehemiah 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12; Luke 10:1-12 (458). “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.”

Friday, Oct 04, 2019 MEMORIAL OF FRANCIS OF ASSISI, RELIGIOUS Faithful to the end Saint Francis of Assisi gave us two kinds of crosses. One is the San Damiano Cross, depicting the Crucifixion and its witnesses. It replicates the cross Francis prayed to when God said, “Rebuild my church.” The other is the simple T-shaped tau cross, made of wood—reminding us to be flexible and humble—which is the final letter of the old Hebrew alphabet (as omega is in Greek, when we say Christ is “Alpha and Omega”). Francis loved the tau and used it as his seal. The prophet Ezekiel said that those faithful to God at the end would be marked with a tau. Remember this Beatitude: Those who are last will be first with God.

TODAY'S READINGS: Baruch 1:15-22; Luke 10:13-16 (459). “Will you be exalted to heaven?”

Saturday, Oct 05, 2019 MEMORIAL OF BLESSED FRANCIS XAVIER SEELOS, PRIEST Good medicine Born in Bavaria, Francis Xavier Seelos joined the Redemptorists to serve as a missionary to German immigrants in the United States. By all accounts he flourished in ministry—and did so with a kind and cheerful attitude. After being stationed in New Orleans, however, he contracted yellow fever caring for the ill and died at the age of 48 in 1867. Imagine the suffering that could have been avoided if the yellow fever vaccine had been available then. So it is disconcerting today to see the anti-vaccine movement grow so strong. The World Health Organization identifies this movement as one of the top 10 global health threats of 2019, all the more troubling given the overwhelming scientific consensus about the safety and efficacy of vaccines. God gave us intelligence so that we might use it to alleviate suffering in the world. Get the facts and talk to those who have been swayed by baseless claims.

TODAY'S READINGS: Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29; Luke 10:17-24 (460). “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.”

SAINT OF THE MONTH

A Modern Day Holy Family Saints Louise and Zelie Martin

On Sunday, October 18, 2015, Pope Francis presided at Mass in St. Peter’s Square which included the Rite of Canonization for Sts. Zelie and Louis Martin. The Martins had beatified earlier on October 19, 2008. The Pope stated in his homily, “The holy spouses Louis Martin and Marie-Azelie Guerin practiced Christian service in the family, creating day by day an environment of faith and love which nurtured the vocations of their daughters, among whom was Saint Therese of the Child Jesus.” They are the first-ever married couple with children to be canonized in the same ceremony.

YEAR OF THE FAMILY EVENTS

Family Stewardship… A Way of Life Stewardship is a commitment to participate in a Christ-centered lifestyle through sacrificial offering of time, and talent. Stewardship is the management of the resources that God has entrusted to us. It is only through God that we are blessed with such resources. It is the expectation that we will use these resources to enlarge and enrich His kingdom. Family Stewardship is a fundamental component in the life of Catholic families. By embracing stewardship, we are able to imitate the love and generosity of our Lord and share His love with those around us. In order to do so, we must start with our parish family and our own family. As parents, it is our calling to be role models of active stewardship in our parish. It is one gift we are able to pass on to many subsequent generations. By engendering a lifestyle of giving and sacrifice, we ensure that our parish family will continue to thrive. Setting examples and modeling faithful giving of time, talent, and treasure are essential in a Christ-centered lifestyle. It is in the doing that we learn about the power of God’s grace and love. It is in imitation of Christ that we teach our children about the power of God’s grace and love. There are many who go above and beyond what has been outlined. Their level of giving and sacrifice is to be commended and imitated wherever possible. If you missed Stewardship Weekend, you are welcome to join anytime, the 2019 Ministry Directory is available on line at www.silcc.org just click on the front page under Stewardship... A Way of Life or under Documents. Sharing of Time: Offering your time and service as a family in the liturgy is a wonderful way to demonstrate a commitment to weekly worship (EMHC, Lector, Altar Server, Eucharistic Adoration, Gift Presenters etc.) Sharing of Talent: God has blessed each and every one of us with a talent to be shared for the benefit of our families and others. There is an expectation that each family will demonstrate and model stewardship by devoting volunteer time throughout the year.
