My Friends in the Lord Jesus,
A Catholic Church trivia question, “What is the name of the Pope’s cathedral?” (Hint: it is not St. Peter’s.) All bishops have a cathedral as the “mother church” of their diocese. Our diocese has St. Paul’s Cathedral, from which Bishop McManus presides, teaches and governs the Diocese of Worcester. The Pope, who is Bishop of Rome, has a cathedral too. It is St. John Lateran in Rome. St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. Every year on November 9th the universal Church celebrates the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica. November 9th was this past Thursday.
The land on which St. John Lateran is built belonged originally to the wealthy Lateran family. Emperor Constantine received the land from the Lateran family. It was used for the building of this cathedral which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. Hence the name, St. John built on Lateran land, St. John Lateran. It is our oldest church. It was in St. John Lateran that Popes were consecrated and had lived until the 14th century. The papal residence and St. John Lateran, to which the papal residence was connected, had suffered fire, earthquakes and ruin. But it survived and has become a symbol of the many trials of Christianity itself. In 1646 Pope Innocent rebuilt the present structure. Tradition tells us that beneath its high altar are the remains of a small wooden table on which St. Peter celebrated Mass.
Popes began to live at the Vatican about the year 1377. St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, which we most commonly associate with the Pope, was begun 1506 and completed in 1626. This is where St. Peter is buried. Our present Pope, Pope Francis, lives in a residence in Vatican City.
What is the significance of celebrating the Cathedral / Basilica of St. John Lateran today? As a cathedral is the center of a diocese, uniting all of the parishes, so this cathedral, the Pope’s cathedral, as the cathedral of Rome, unites all dioceses, all Catholics, around the world. Every church building, although sacred in itself, reminds us that we, the people, are the Church of Christ, living stones, a spiritual edifice unto God. So we pray: “O God, who were pleased to call your Church the Bride, grant that the people that serves your name may revere you, love you and follow you, and may be led by you to attain your promises in heaven…Year by year you sanctify the Church, the Bride of Christ, foreshadowed in visible buildings, so that, rejoicing as the mother of countless children, she may be given her place in your heavenly glory.” Fr. Ron

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” (Matthew 25:13)
Many of us have put off doing something because we think we are too busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Unfortunately, too many of us apply this attitude to our Faith. Jesus’ call is urgent, in the here and now, in your current circum-stances. Don’t delay, how is God calling you to use your gifts today?

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Prayer shawls are made with love by the members of St. Bernadette Prayer Shawl Ministry, for those who need comfort, encouragement, reassurance, and the warmth of community in a time of illness, loss, transition or difficulty. When making the shawls, we pray for the recipient as we knit or crochet, so the person who uses one of our handmade shawls will be wrapped in prayer.
If you know someone who needs a prayer shawl, or if you are interested in our ministry, please contact Mary Anne Curtis at 508-393-6751.

“The credibility of the Church and of the Chris an Message rests en rely on how Chris ans serve

Pope Francis in his homily to new cardinals in 2015
November 9, 2017 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the United States, more than 46 million people are living in poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is our an -poverty program to help them find hope and a way to a more secure life. Your support of this collec on reaches those living on the margins and gives them a hand up, not a hand out.
For example, around Charleston, South Carolina, many children live in poverty, crea ng undue stress and uncertainty in their lives. Compounding these problems, deteriora ng school systems struggle to provide quality educa on and appropriate discipline, and there is a high rate of school-based arrests. By engaging congrega ons and communi es all over the city, the Charleston Area Jus ce Ministry is working to improve the educa on system and keep kids in school and out of the juvenile jus ce system. With your support of the CCHD Collec on, the Charleston Area Jus ce Ministry is able to provide community engagement to reduce youth arrests and violence.
This collec on is the primary source of funding for CCHD’s an -poverty grants and educa on programs. Twenty-five percent of the collec on stays here in our diocese. On October 30, I once again had the privilege of mee ng with our parish and community groups who receive the local grants from this campaign. It is always inspiring to me to see how these small seeds grow into frui ul programs to support the dignity of people who find themselves most o en on the margin in our ci es and towns.
Please help the efforts of CCHD to break the cycle of poverty. Fight poverty in Central Massachuse s and in America. Support CCHD on November 18 & 19 and par cipate in the inaugural World Day of the Poor called for by our Holy Father, Pope Francis. For more informa on about the CCHD and the scope of poverty in America, please visit www.povertyusa.org. Thank you for joining us to work on the margins. With every prayerful best wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester

Thank You
The students, faculty, and administration of St. Bernadette School would like to thank the Parishioners of St. Bernadette Church for their generosity during the Fall Appeal for Catholic Schools in September. Close to $5,000 was collected within the Parish—which will directly benefit our School. Through the Fall Appeal for Catholic Schools, our students are provided boundless opportunities with a strong curricu-lum, advanced technology in the classroom, exposure to the arts, and an ever-present focus on our faith—as evidenced by being named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School. Funds from Appeal also allows us to provide tuition assistance to those families in need.
The continued generosity and support of St. Bernadette Parish is a blessing to our
School and for that we are grateful.
