Coming into the Christmas season many gifts are bought and given out of thanks, appreciation or love for those the gifts are given too. Giving gifts is often an expression of our inner thoughts and feelings toward a person. My first real (“expensive”) gift to Megan while we were dating was a Motor Cycle Helmet. I also bought a new one for me too so we had a matching pair. I know, I know I’m such a romantic. I was reading Acts 26 recently and came to Verse 20 where Paul is explaining the right response to this good news of Jesus sacrifice for all people when he says “and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.” Like giving gifts is an expression of our inner thoughts and feelings, deeds are an expression of repentance and turning to God. Deeds do not save us. Paul says deeds are evidence of repentance that has already taken place. We often read “deeds” and think giving to charity, helping people out and while true in some regard, deeds also means work and some of that work is changing ourselves. At the core of our Heart Matters series has been the challenge for us all in various ways to repent and turn to God performing deeds in keeping with their repentance. Have you heard God challenging you in an area that requires repentance? Maybe you have sort God’s forgiveness in Christ. The challenge is to now live in light of that repentance, to make the changes that reflect repentance, to seek or offer forgiveness, to make amends and restore broken relationships, to perform the hard work of dying to destructive behaviours and attitudes. It might seem like hard work and it can be, but it is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit and supportive brothers and sisters in Christ.
May your deeds/works be the outward response to what you have already received through
Christ..
