1 NEWS FROM PASTOR SUE “A mosaic consists of thousands of little stones. Some are blue, some are green, some are yellow, and some are gold. When we bring our faces close to the mosaic we can admire the beauty of each stone. But as we step back from it, we can see that all those little stones reveal to us a beautiful picture, telling a story none of these stones can tell by itself. That is what our life in community is about. Each of us is like a little stone, but together we reveal the face of God to the world. Nobody can say, ‘I make God visible.’ But others who see us together can say, ‘They make God visible.’ Community is where humility and glory touch.” --Henri Nouwen I want to begin by thanking Trinity with all my heart for making time for a sabbatical available to me this past summer. More than I knew, my spirit needed rest and replenishment. I am beyond grateful to the Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program for providing the financial support to make my adventures away and pastoral care coverage here at home possible. I feel new energy and enthusiasm for ministry. I am deeply appreciative of those who kept Trinity cherished and engaged in my absence, especially Karen Moser, whose ministry in the church office is varied and endless. She is our face and voice to the public, and I’m thankful for her grace, efficiency, and humility. Also, enormous thanks to Supply Pastor Ron Mach, Pastor JoAnne Fabie, Pastor John Ruppenthal, Deana Hipke, Wendy Ward, Andy Kvalheim, members of the church council, and all the people who helped with worship and/or with behind the scenes labors of love. The face of God you reveal to the world is a lovely mosaic indeed. Under the sabbatical theme “Journey to a New Beginning” David and I followed in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh for five weeksbeginning in the Netherlands, where he grew up, and concluding in Southern France, at his grave. I learned a great deal about the creative process and spiritual journey of artists (particularly the Impressionists), and delighted in wandering through the fruits of their labor. It is increasingly clear to me that one of my primary paths to God is through beauty, so it was a blessing to visit many world-class museums (especially the Musee D’Orsay in Paris), cathedrals, lavender fields, historic ruins and other heart-stoppingly lovely places. You may or may not have visited my blog this summer. It’s still available at Vangoghgogo.wordpress.com. I promise to write new posts as our journey continues. Upon returning to the U.S. I took an 8-session mosaic glass tutorial from local Wisconsin artist Don Spencer, and flew to Washington state to take a watercolor class with my youngest niece Katarina at the Grunewald Guild. I intend to pursue both glass art and watercolor painting as hobbies/modes of prayer. I’m eager to share more of what I saw, learned, felt, and discovered during my summer away. There will be a Powerpoint presentation following worship on Sept. 17, where I promise not to show you all 500 of my photos! 1904 Winnebago Street – Madison, WI 53704 Phone: (608) 249-8527 – Fax: (608) 249-9070 Email: [email protected] – Website: www.tlcmsn.org September & October 2017

REFLECTIONS FROM SUPPLY PASTOR RON MACH
Trinity faithful: First, thank you for providing for your Pastor Sue the opportunity for Sabbatical time. The
benefits to her and to the congregation in the long run are many, but the main one is a rich and renewed
ministry for all of you.
And thank you for the hospitality shared with Carol and me during the summer months at Trinity. Volunteers
stepped up to lead worship, provide music, and staff the many ministries to the community.
In the year of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation’s beginning, you are ready to rethink the insights of
Martin Luther and apply his radical teaching about God’s grace for all.
Thanks be to God. Ron Mach, Supply Pastor
The sabbatical team and I are convinced that the
connection between art and faith is so significant
that it needs more than one hour’s conversation.
Therefore, the sabbatical team is arranging cottage
meetings in members’ homes around the Madison
area in the coming months. Small groups will
gather in member’s homes to look at photos and to
talk about my trip, as well as to discuss the
congregational component of the Lilly Grant—the
mural we will create on the church wall. We are
still looking for locations for our cottage meetings
in the Sun Prairie and Waunakee areas, so if you’d
like to host a gathering in your home (or a
community room, if you live in a condo, apartment
complex or other communal living space), please
contact me
As we embark on a new program year, it is a joy to
be with you again. I look forward to how God will
be at work in, with, around, and through us in the
days, weeks, months, and years to come.
Pastor Sue

GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS. SERVICE PROJECTS!
On Rally Sunday, we engage one another’s minds as Sunday School returns from summer break. On Sunday,
September 10, children will be led to class by their teachers following the Children’s
Sermon and return to their families in time for communion.
Following worship, we will gather downstairs & outside to participate in God’s Work.
Our Hands. Service Projects. As described on the following page, there will be
something for everyone! Please join us! Many hands make light work!
Sunday School Registration
Sunday School is open to all children age 3- Grade 6. Enrollment forms and program
information are available in the Narthex or contact the church office to have a form
sent to you. ([email protected] or 249-8527) All are welcome anytime, including visitors!
Teach Sunday School
One of the greatest opportunities you will ever have aside from following Christ, is to teach the young. Here is
an opportunity to serve, and to move forward and grow closer to God. What a rewarding experience you will
have. We are in need of a Sunday School Teacher for the 7, 8 & 9 year old children of our church. We may
even include some 10 year olds who show and interest in learning more. It is a way to get to know our children
and to influence their Christian learning. Can you help? Please say ‘YES’ and contact either the church office or
Vicki Olson. Of course, our 4, 5 & 6 year olds will continue to have Jen Dyer as their fantastic teacher!
GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS. PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES - SEPTEMBER 10
Trinity will be joining with thousands of other congregations in the
ELCA for God’s Work. Our Hands. This is an annual day of public
service by our congregations, a sign that we are at work serving
God’s world in many ways.
Following worship that day, those who prefer to be outdoors will
mulch Trinity’s garden, making our building hospitable and
welcoming to the many groups who gather here. If you aren’t a
gardener, there will also be an opportunity to walk through our neighborhood, collecting trash. This is one more
way to love our neighbors.
Those who prefer indoor work will gather downstairs in the Fellowship Hall to
write letters of encouragement and support to members of Messiah Lutheran
Church in Houston. Not only are members facing flooding damage in their
individual homes, but their sanctuary and education wing are waist-deep in water.
If you have another idea for a project we can undertake to publicly serve, please
pass on your suggestions! We can offer more opportunities on Sept. 10, or tuck
them away for another time.
FREED & RENEWED IN CHRIST – 500 YEARS OF GOD’S GRACE IN ACTION
When Ebeneezer Scrooge is confronted with his need for renewal and refreshment in
Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, he is visited by the ghosts of Christmases
Past, Present, and Future. Similarly, as we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the
Reformation this year, Christians will be looking at how God has been at work in the
church in the Past, Present, and Future (though with God, time is always fluid, so the
demarcations among the categories aren’t as clear cut for us as they were for Mr.
Scrooge).
Events that commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther are plentiful around the
synod (and the globe, for that matter!) this fall. Three events in particular might be of
interest to you. One is a Reformation Hymn Event on Sunday, October 1, at 2:30 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran
Church, Monona, at which organists Bruce Bengtson and Terry Peterson will present music of the
Reformation along with background information and some chances to sing along. Additionally, an ecumenical
hymn sing will be held at the First Lutheran Church of Janesville on Saturday, November 4th, at 7pm.
(For more information and to sign up, please contact Jan Knutson, [email protected], (608) 921-6534).
A 500th Anniversary of the Reformation Commemoration Statewide Catholic and Lutheran Faith
Event will take place in Milwaukee on Oct. 31. Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki, Archdiocese of Milwaukee,
and Paul Erickson, Bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
will gather with the faithful at Ascension Lutheran Church, Milwaukee to give thanks for the gifts received
through the dialogues that have taken place over the last 50 years. You are invited to join in this very special
event! A video invitation awaits you: https://milwaukeesynod.org/reformation-events.
In smaller ways, we will mark this anniversary throughout the fall here at Trinity, giving special attention
to it during worship on Reformation Sunday, Oct. 29 (Past), All Saint's Day Nov.5 (Present) and Nov. 12,
which will be dedicated to imaging the Future. We will rejoice with our confirmands: Victoria Ashworth,
Isabell Newton, Dane Lottridge and Marit Scheckel; as they affirm the promises their families made at their
baptisms. (Date TBD, this Fall)
More opportunities to reflect on our heritage will no doubt present themselves in the next couple of months.
Please check our synod's website to see what's happening in congregations around this area: scsw-elca.org.

NOTES OF THANKS
Dear Pastor Sue and Trinity Lutheran Church…Thank you so much for making us feel so
welcome during our stay in July. The lasagna dinner and fellowship with members of the
church were an amazing welcome! Thank you again for everything!! It was a great few days in
Madison. Blessings, Your Friends from Bike & Build
Dear Trinity Lutheran Church…Thank you for your continued support of MALC Jail
Ministry. The generous support of congregations like yours make it possible for the men and women
incarcerated in the Dane County jail to receive spiritual care and pastoral support. Blessings to you, Executive
Committee and staff of the MALC Jail Ministry
DIAKONIA COURSES COMING TO TRINITY THIS FALL
Diakonia is a Greek word meaning spirit-empowered service guided by faith. The Diakonia program is a two-
year process of spiritual formation and theological education for baptized members of the ELCA or anyone
wishing in good faith to study the teachings of the church. Courses will be offered at Trinity on Saturday
mornings beginning the second weekend of September. Details and registration forms are available in the
Narthex. Interested participants do not need to sign up for the entire series, but are encouraged to attend the
courses of interest to them that work with their schedules. The cost of each course is $60, with a nonrefundable
$25 enrollment fee.
JoAnn Fabie and Ericka Short have both been a part of the synod’s Diakonia program. You are welcome to see
them for further information or if you have questions about the program. You also may contact Barbara
Zimmerman at (608) 535-0264 or [email protected].
If you are among the many people who have
been away or preoccupied during the summer
months, you may have fallen behind in your
financial giving. No need to panic. You can
catch up. If it would help to have your
contribution automatically deducted from your
checking account, please talk to Mark Schwarz
about signing up for Simply Giving.

ELCA.ORG/DISASTER
Please stand by our neighbors as we begin the long road to recovering from Hurricane Harvey, one of
the most catastrophic storms to hit the country in more than a decade.
Lutheran Disaster Response’s affiliate is actively present, collaborating with community leaders and
officials to initiate the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery efforts. Together, we have a strong
history of working with disasters in the Gulf Coast area. Recovery efforts are expected to take years, and
Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected through every phase of this disaster.
We invite you to stand by our neighbors on the Gulf Coast during this time. Your gifts ensure that our
church will be able to provide help and hope for those left homeless or otherwise affected by this disaster for
years to come.
Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response, designated for "Hurricane Response – United States" will be used
entirely (100 percent) for this disaster until the response is complete. Together, we can help provide immediate
and long-lasting support. Give today to support the needs in this response and others like it.
