The Hour of Code takes place each year during Com-

puter Science Education Week in December. Last

month, more than 90 Hewlett Packard employees

volunteered at six local school districts in San Diego

County, with the majority of employees volunteering

in the Poway Unified School District. Volunteers as-

sisted 1,070 students at fifteen PUSD schools, with a

focus on elementary and middle school students. HP

Rancho Bernardo site employees have always had a

strong interest in helping local students during the

Hour of Code. HP volunteers also assisted in creating

a code.org teacher account so that students can code

all year long.

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction

to computer science, designed to demystify "code" to

show that anybody can learn the basics and to broad-

en participation in the field of computer science. Hour

of Code has since become a worldwide effort to cele-

brate computer science starting with 1-hour coding

activities.

to the generous funding provided by

the Bosch Community Foundation,

Northrop Grumman participates in

Tarde de Familia at

Meadowbrook Middle School

Additionally, the event consisted of a project-based activity led by engineering students from the University of San Diego. Over 75 participants attended this in-formative evening, which includ-ed childcare and dinner.

A special thank you to guest speakers, Saul Molina from the University of California- San Diego, Thomas Montero from the U.S. Defense Security Service, and San-dra Aldrete, Carlos Cardona, and Delta Esparza from Northrop Grumman.

PUSD Career Technical Education hosted its second annual CTE Tarde de Familia (CTE Family Night) at Meadowbrook Middle School. The evening provided Spanish speaking students and their families an over-view of the Information & Communi-cation Technology Career Pathway. Guest speakers shared their family history and personal journey to pur-sue a career in Information Commu-nication Technology, and the panel-ists discussed their professional ex-perience in this industry.

Technology and from Agriculture

to Animation. CTE classes provide

students with the skills needed to

succeed in furthering their educa-

tion and career goals. Among last

year’s CTE students, 95% went on

to further education, and 63% of

those are pursuing studies related

to their CTE high school course

work. With recent grant money,

PUSD has been able to expand and

improve the number of relevant

and rigorous CTE courses offered to

high school students.

Workforce Development

The Poway Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, in collabora-

tion with Poway Unified School District, Miramar Community College and

Palomar Community College, has surveyed close to 100 businesses in

Poway and San Diego to determine what skills gaps, if any, exist in the

business community. Based on the survey results, the Committee is now

in the process of developing a workforce development program, with a

focus on providing students with internships, business mentors and

speakers, job shadowing opportunities, company tours, and externships

for teachers during the summer. In addition, the committee will produce

a video, which will highlight current business partnerships, in an effort to

increase the number of work-based learning internships for high school

and college students. For more information about the Poway Chamber

of Commerce Education Committee, visit www.poway.com

As part of the Project Lead the Way Program (PLTW) program, 40 Oak Val-

ley Middle School female students attended a Women in Engineering Day

at Lockheed Martin Day in November. Speakers and panelists spoke to

students about their specific job, and why they decided to pursue an engi-

neering career. They also discussed different types of jobs available at

Lockheed Martin. Students took a virtual tour of Mars and participated in

hands-on engineering activities led by Lockheed engineers. The day con-

cluded with a robotics demonstration by Poway High School Robotics

Team Spyder.
