We were brought to life and bit by bit… we grew bigger every day.3

1990 – We have edited the first

issue of Arhitext magazine.

A review that aimed from its first

issue, continued and succeded

to build a cultural context and

promote the exchange of ideas

between various cultural actors:

architects, urban planners,

sociologists, artists, designers,

practitioners in the field of

architecture and art theory, but

also students and the general

public interested in the cultural

scene.

ARHITEXT MAGAZINE 22 years

218 issues

over 700 romanian projects

over 1000 international projects

We were brought to life and bit by bit… we grew bigger every day.5

1993 – We’ve put the grounds

for the second most consequent

project of the Foundation, after

the magazine: The Arhitext design

Awards (contest and exhibition).

The Awards, ran every two years,

is one of our cultural initiatives

and successful projects. Through

them, we sought and succeeded

to present the most interesting

and innovative architectural

projects made in Romania, be

they residences, blocks of flats,

gardens or plazas, interior design

projects or rehabilitated buildings.

Every two years, starting with

1993, we have given prizes, with

the support of Nemetschek, to the

best built architectural projects

from Romania.

2005 – We thought bigger. We

thought the Awards should not

stand alone and integrated it into

a Festival, ran every two years,

that had developed themes like

InBetween (2005), Inside/Insight

Cultures (2007), Tropisms (2009).

International contributors did not

take long to appear either, and we

hosted exhibitions like: «Project

Belgrade – transition:ism», the

Moldavian artists’ exhibition

«Architecture from over the Prut»,

Hungarian exhibition: «young

architects’ generation», Rintala &

Eggertsson architects exhibition.

We were brought to life and bit by bit… we grew bigger every day.9

2006 – Arhitext edited the first

collection of architecture books

from its portfolio: «Arhitext

Monographs», which was soon

followed by «Arhitext Archive

of Ideas», «Arhitext Books» and

«Prospective Nostalgias». Most of

them contain bilingual books and

address an international public,

due to their extremely interesting

and consistent content which we

have ellaborated together with

our collaborators.

2007 – We have consistently and

consequently started to organize

contests dedicated to students

in architecture and not only. We

have had essays contests, projects

contests and ideas contests

through which we have discovered

valuable collaborators and

students that have now became

good practitioners. The most well

known of them is |NDR~ZNE{TE!

Contest which is a school projects

contest that reached its 3rd

edition. The contest is very well

received by the public and has

also a special section of Best

Nemetschek Allplan presentation.

We organized special Galas for

prizing the winners.

STUDENT CONTESTS over 350 students participating

2008 – Experimental workshops

Assemblage I and later on

Assemblage II (2010) were

organized at the Centre for studies

in vernacular architecture, at

Dealu Frumos, the geographical

centre of the country. We

dedicated these events to inter

and intra – disciplinarity. We

mixed different forms of art

(architecture, music, dance,

photography and movie) and

made people from all these fields

interact and influence each other

through their interaction.

EXPERIMENTAL WORKSHOPS

2011 – At Trans-architectures

Summer School, from july,

we brought 15 students, at

architecture and arts, close

together and helped them create

installations/objects from merely

nothing else but natural elements

from their surroundings under the

attentive guidance of architects

and designers. It was an intense

week with Nemetschek workshops

and evening conferences along

with everyday working sessions.

But the results were more than fit

to be presented and developed at

a larger scale, as a self standing

exhibition that we made together

at Timisoara, during the Festival

we had there in October.

SUMMER SCHOOLS 15 students participating

17 Growing towards an Architectural Biennial for East and Central Europe.

2006 – Arhitext magazine

started a regional approach,

dedicating each year 1 issue to the

architecture of certain countries

in the region. Thus, we have

gathered materials from countries

like Austria, Slovenia, Czech

Republic, Turkey, Russia, Serbia

and Hungary.

2007 – Regional exhibitions

like «Project Belgrade –

transition:ism», the Moldavian

artists’ exhibition «Architecture

from over the Prut», Hungarian

exhibition: «young architects’

generation» were hosted by us

during the Arhitext Festivals.

2008 – We have also crossed the

borders by taking «Two lines:

global and local» exhibition to

Venice, during the Architecture

Biennial.

REGIONAL APPROACH 7 dedicated magazine issues

3 exhibitions from the region

over 190 projects

over 170 architecture studios

2011 – Arhitext International

Festival Fluencies was the 4th

Festival we made and was

explicitly and evidently the first

international one. It was a natural

development, considering the

previous editions of the Festival.

The theme of the Festival that

took place in Timisoara, between

7 and 9 of October, was Fluencies

and was developed in both an

exhibition and a catalogue.

21 We have grown and started to look with even more confidence further into the future.

Through the Fluencies exhibition,

we drew in Timisoara, in a place

of all confluences, the map of

the most recent tendencies,

movements, and communication

corridors from the «reservoir» of

recent architecture from Central,

Eastern, and South-Eastern

Europe.

And we got to think, from the

perspective of a dialogue of

the unconsumed, reusable

modernities, of the need to

recapture the scales of humanity

by outlining some sensible micro-

architectures, sensuous and moral,

responsible and sustainable at the

same time. In other words, of a

new architectural humanism, of a

re-architecturing of the human.

Fluencies International Festival

was a natural step towards the

Regional Arhitext Biennial that

the Festival will turn into at the

next edition.

Page 26: PARTNERS FOR A REGIONAL VISION

2012 – We have already received

invitations to itinerate the

Fluencies exhibition in the country

as well as in Budapest and Paris

and we are currently working in

making this happen.

This will establish a precedent as

we wish to itinerate every thematic

exhibition we organise. We are

also interested in the Western and

North European countries where

the exhibition could be displayed.

We see Arhitext Regional Biennial

as a long term programme, which

will also reflect in all other activities

and editorial projects we have.

Thus, east-centricarch.eu, the East

and Central European architecture

internet platform that we have

launched, will grow day by day

presenting quality architecture

projects from this region, all from a

critical perspective.

The Arhitext magazine, starting

2012, will be declaredly a regional

magazine, both through its content

and presence on the market.

Therefore we will include in the

magazine even more projects and

also critical articles involving the

architecture in East and Central

European Countries.

27 We see ourselves into the future and thus build relentlessly for it.

2013 – The Arhitext Regional

Biennial that we are planning for

2013 is a consequence of 22 years of

hard work and consistent evaluation

of the architectural context we live

in. For us it is a fair step that we

are taking as we have gathered

the experience and knowledge to

take this step forward. The Arhitext

design Awards will no longer be a

national contest, but a regional one,

addressing the East and Central

European architecture practitioners.

Until then we will try to develop

even more our connections network

and tighten the relations we have

with the regional architectural

organizations. We will launch once

again open calls for papers and

projects in order to give everyone

fair chances to participate in the

future exhibition.

We have therefore begun to prepare

this Biennial and we will soon decide

upon a theme and a work calendar.

Through all our projects (either cultural or editorial) we try to reach our main objectives:- identifying present and future valuable people in architecture,- encouraging critical spirit amongst young architect students and not only,- aligning to contemporary debates from the fields of architecture, urban planning and design,- growing awarness and knowledge upon the architecture field amongst general public, - building a strong network of connections that help professionals interact with specialists from other fields, - growing awarness of the romanian architects and critics on regional level and awarness of the regional demarches to our practitioners,- highlighting the architecture in the East and Central European region, by identifing the local visions which create the nuances of the global approach upon contemporary architecture.
