Through a letter of January 18, 2010, Rector Major Fr. Pascual Chávez called to the solidarity of the Congregation with a cry from his heart: As in a family everybody cares for a sick son, we too, driven by compassion, want to go to rescue of this small province so severely affected… I invite all Salesian provinces and houses around the world to provide a significant help to our brothers who are now in a so great need. The response was immediate and generous. I address a tribute to our Rector Major, who engaged himself as Father for us, in the way of Don Bosco, encouraging us to get up in order to continue the work of education of the most needy children and young. I appreciate and thank the intervention of our Procures, NGOs, Provinces, benefactors, volunteers or international organizations that have been so close to us with plenty of enthusiasm and generosity, especially during the emergency period. Thank God, we stand working in the reconstruction of the Vice-Province. The Rector Major’s appeal during his visit a month after the earthquake continuously resounds in our hearts: Haiti must come to life again… It is time to roll up the sleeves for the task of creating a new culture with a new education able to build a new Haiti. This demands a lot of courage, inner strength, self-sacrifice, motivation, charity, hope, faith in God, in life, in the future, in ourselves and in the others, patience and perseverance. You, who still go marching to our side, be confident! We need to be accompanied, supported, understood, respected and over all loved, but we shall overcome. Thanks to all those who through Rinaldi Foundation participate in this noble task of reconstruction with the aim of providing the most vulnerable children and youth an education that meets their needs and can give them some hope for a better future. We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Salesians in Haiti with a renewed commitment to transform all our educational and pastoral activities in opportunities for every child of becoming the good Christian and honest citizen that the country needs. Help us to say YES to life by promoting civic, moral, cultural, educational and spiritual values in each of our houses and schools and in the heart of each one of our pupils and students. SALITASYON – Greeting from Fr. Provincial, Sylvain Ducange

January 12, 2012, has brought the second anniversary of the earthquake that struck down our country. All the institutions from Church to Government, educational system or Justice were strongly affected and for the most part of their infrastructures destroyed.

Through a letter of January 18, 2010, Rector Major Fr. Pascual Chávez called to the solidarity of the Congregation with a cry from his heart: As in a family everybody cares for a sick son, we too, driven by compassion, want to go to

rescue of this small province so severely affected… I invite all Salesian provinces and houses around the world to

provide a significant help to our brothers who are now in a so great need.

The Rector Major’s appeal during his visit a month after the earthquake continuously resounds in our hearts: Haiti must come to life again… It is time to roll up the sleeves for the task of creating a new culture with

a new education able to build a new Haiti.

An nou mache men nan lanmen, piti piti, pou lavi boujonnen, (Let us go hand in hand, step by step, so that life can resume,

pouse, grandi, fleri, pote anpil fwi RENMEN grow, flourish, give fruits of LOVE

pou yon lòt jenès, yon lot AYITI, kenbe pa lage! Engaged in the work of helping to produce a new youth, a new HAITI, we stand firm!)

TO EDUCATE

Always concerned about the education of the most disadvantaged children and youth, the Salesians in Haiti, immediately after the disaster of January 2010, devoted themselves to find the means to resume the academic activity in their schools. To do this they were supported by their Salesian brothers all over the world and by other partner institutions that provided a lot of help ranging from school materials to money to pay the teachers, food or drinking water. By the middle of April 2010 all the Salesian schools and training centers had reopened and other activities to introduce young people in social work were taking place. To take the children out of streets had been achieved. Now we go on working to improve the quality of our pastoral an educational activities.

TO HELP

After the earthquake, the Salesians involved themselves to save lives, help the injured and offer shelter to all the distressed overwhelmed by the extent of the disaster. The playgrounds and fields of the Salesian houses of Pétion-Ville, Drouillard, Cité-Soleil and Thorland became a secure place for thousands of refugees. With the support of other partners that provided food, sanitation, drinking water or health care an immense work was done during the emergency period.

TO BUILD

With piles of corpses, the collapsed buildings were one of the most visible effects of the earthquake. The buildings in the Salesian centers ENAM, Drouillard, Cité-Soleil, Pétion-ville, Fleuriot, Thorland and Gressier collapsed or were seriously damaged. With the support of the whole Congregation and other benefactors, the Salesians in Haiti put themselves immediately to word in order to repair, rebuild or build anew their schools and centers. The generosity they got went beyond devastated areas and the communities of the Cap-Haitian, Fort-Liberté, Cayes and Gonaïves were integrated to the Salesian Vice-Province global plan of reconstruction. Some achievements of these two years are the construction of a Primary, a Secondary and a Boarding Center in Gressier, the Nursing School of Fort – Liberté, the Rinaldi Foundation Warehouse, some different security walls, the land acquisition to build a Technical School, the beginning of the construction of the new Provincial Center and the Post-novitiate House...
