country. He was a Canon of Lincoln Cathedral, and was President of the Brigg branch of

DEATH OF THE REV. G. W. NEWNHAM.

The death at Corsham on Thursday of the Rev. George William Newnham at the

patriarchal age of 87, after ministry of sixty-two years, removes from the scene one who

had been a familiar figure Bath for half a century, and an earnest and vigorous supporter

of the Evangelical party in the Church life of that period. Mr. Newnham, was a son of the

late Rev. William Moore Newnham, sometime Bursar of C.C.C. Oxford and rector of

Bassingham, Lincoln, and father of the Right Rev. J. A. Newnham, recently consecrated

Bishop of Moosonee. The subject of our notice was born in 1806, gained a Scholarship at

C.C.C. in 1823, took his degree in 2nd Class Lit. Hum. 1827, and was ordained at Wells

1831. Amongst his contemporaries at Oxford whose names figure on the same class lists

were the late Bishop Jeune, of Peterborough, Bishop Jacobson, of Chichester, Canon

Heurtley, afterwards Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, Mr. Herman Merivale, and Mr. W.

Butterfield, the architect of Keble College. He was curate in charge of Coleford, Somerset,

1831-1840, and of Shaw, near Melksham, from 1840-1842, in which year he accepted the

incumbency of Combe Down where he remained till 1877, combining with it the mother

church of Monkton Combe from 1845-1863. After his retirement to Corsham in the early

part of 1877, Mr. Newnham took an active interest in all the work of the parish, and till

quite recently assisted many of the neighbouring clergy in the Sunday services. He bad

been staunch supporter of the C. M S. since 1832, and for years held the office of

Secretary to the Bath Clerical Society. He was frequent contributor the correspondence

columns of the Bath Chronicle, his signature of "Emeritus" being well-known. His last letter

appeared recently December 14, "Let man take thy Crown."

[The Oxford University records suggest that he was the ONLY son of William Moore Newnham.]

his living children as William Moore, Frances, John and Charles. The couple's marriage allegation

12 Ibid (i). Catherine Byrne was the daughter of Sir Peter Byrne Leicester, Baronet, of Tabley

House, Cheshire.

She later married Rev. Thomas Jee, vicar of Thaxted, Essex and before that lecturer at

Weathersfield. He seems to have been born c1771. Robert Clowes was married to Catherine –

born c1801 Harwich, Essex, he had been born in St Olaves, Southwark, Surrey about 1798. She

looks like a child of Thomas and Catherine. BUT – she already had a daughter called Catherine!

The Clowes had eight daughters and a son, all born in Knutsford.

13 John Atkinson usually gave his place of birth as Hill-street, Berkeley-square, London. This was

presumably number 24, the residence of Lord Leicester, his grandfather.

14 Canon John Christopher Atkinson was the author of "Forty years in a moorland parish" – the

parish being Danby Yorkshire. The census returns show that he had been born in Goldhanger,

Essex, confirming his identity. In 1861 his sisters Martha (born Wethersfield) and Emma W (born

Great Wigboro') are visiting on the night of the census. Martha is described a "housekeeper to her

father" and Emma as "author of and teacher of drawing". It cannot be a coincidence that his

youngest daughter, born c1871, was called Lilias Cecilia Maude – Rev. W O Newnham had a

daughter Lilias Maude born in Natal c 1867. The two cousins were both graduates of St John's

College, Cambridge, although a decade apart.

Christy, M. 1890 The birds of Essex. Essex Field Club Special Memoirs vol 11. Chelmsford

ATKINSON, Rev. J. C, was born in 1814 at Goldhanger, of

which place his father, the Rev. John Atkinson {q.v.), was curate.

He is an excellent ornithologist, as might have been expected

from the fact that both his father and grandfather were fond of

the study. The days of his boyhood were spent in the district

around Goldhanger, Great Wigborough, Little Wigborough, Peldon,

Tollesbury, Mersea, &:c., and he thus had unrivalled facilities for

becoming intimately acquainted with the birds frequenting that

part of the Essex coast, opportunities of which he made excellent

use. He also resided in, or by means of visits became familiar with,

Eardfield, Finchingfield, Gosfield, Colchester, Maldon, and other

parts of Essex. Many notes of his on the ornithology of our coast

may be found in the early volumes of the Zoologist. In short, the

first twenty-four years of Mr. Atkinson's life, allowing for university

residence, were spent in Essex. He afterwards resided in Suffolk,

Herefordshire, and Berkshire. In or about 1846, he became Vicar

of Danby, near Grosmont, Yorkshire, where he still resides.

15 It seems that it was Harriet's marriage to Rev John West which precipitated the move of

Caroline and Catherine from Essex to the Farnham area. John had been appointed to Stebbing-

with-Saling, Essex in about 1804. This was almost the next village to Weathersfield. After about

10 years he was appointed to White Roothing, Essex and five years later he went to Canada

(without family?) returning as Rector of Chettle and Farnham (Dorset) by 1826. While he was

away his family must have been living in the Farnham (Surrey) area as his daughter Catherine

was born in Aldershot.

16 James Hinds of Newcastle-under-Lyme was the tenant of "The Vaults", Red Lion Square, in

1838.
