CHALKDUST THEATRE COMPANY Back in 1993 a small group of drama teachers, interested colleagues, and students were brought together by their love of drama, and a mutual wish develop their own and others’ talents. Chalkdust Theatre was born, and nurtured through the early years, producing high quality shows on a shoestring, in school halls. Blossoming from those humble beginnings, Chalkdust Theatre Inc. made its home in the old Q Theatre, in Penrith, bringing as many as three different productions per year to a growing audience of friends and family as well as a ever-increasing number of local theatre goers who recognized and appreciated the company’s high production values in bringing theatre to Western Sydney. Never losing sight of the company’s educational beginnings, in those early years Chalkdust toured productions to high school audiences as well as presenting children’s productions especially written by company founder, Peter Hazell. In 2001, the International Year of the Volunteer, Chalkdust Theatre Inc. was recognized by Penrith City Council for the company’s contributions to the community in the field of The Arts. After the local theatre community said goodbye to the institution that was the original Q Theatre, Chalkdust lent their talents to the farewell show, and then moved on to find a new home. Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres beckoned and has become a welcoming, new venue for the company as Chalkdust Theatre moved to a cooperative company model. The company’s charter to maintain an educational focus has continued to thrive and many of Chalkdust’s production choices currently look to high school drama and English student audiences, with critical acclaim. With twenty years of comedy and tragedy (on and off the stage) to its credit, and amidst the challenges faced by the Arts in the current financial climate, Chalkdust Theatre Inc. continues to strive for theatrical excellence.
