viewed our Facebook page or website, which

shows part of the service, please take the time

to do so.

Thank you to Ben Andersen and his Year 10HG2

class who used the opportunity to produce Gold

Standard project based learning for the

students. It gave opportunities for the class to

work in teams, collaborate, organise, advertise,

speak publically, communicate in written form

and more than anything else, give back to the

community in remembering the fallen soldiers.

Thank you to special guests, 1st Officer Rod

Walker and Dave Arnold for making the time

and effort to make contributions to the

ceremony and a special thanks to our ex-

student Beau Beyers, who spoke with

eloquence.

Wings Over Illawarra is on

spanned Maths, Science and Technology and

was most engaging.

Steve Vischer from Wings Over Illawarra has

generously donated ten tickets to the hardest

working students. These students and their

families will to attend the pilot briefing, meet

Matt Hall (RAAF fighter combat instructor and

Australian Red Bull Champion) as well as meet

the acrobatic pilots personally.

Well done to; Jane Griffiths, Emily McFarlane,

Amity Mayo, Aliyah Chie, Jacob VanDen Burg,

Mikala Koechel, Dylan Nguyen, Lauren

Littlemore, Logan Faff and Mitchell Matt.

We look forward to hearing about your special

experience at Wings Over Illawarra.

Study Skills Evening

Albion Park High School is very fortunate to

have engaged the services of Dr Prue Salter, a

leading researcher and presenter in the area of

study skills. Dr Salter is coming to Albion Park

High School to present to parents and students

from Years 10, 11 and 12 about effective study

skills leading into senior studies on Thursday 14

June, 2018 from 6-7.30pm. Further information

will go out to students in these year groups

during week 3 of this term.

We hope to see many families take advantage

of this unique opportunity to support your

child’s education and performance at school.

Important note for Year 7 parents

Our school has agreed to participate in a

research study which is exploring ways to

promote and increase water consumption and

decrease sugar sweetened beverage (SSBs)

consumption in Year 7 students.

Part of the study will involve a survey of all Year

7 students during their class time. A letter will

be emailed out to all paretns next week with

details on the study and the option to opt out if

you wish. The great part is we will be receiving a

chilled water station as part of the program.

More information to follow.

What’s happening in HSIE

In term 1, Year 10 History Students and HSC

Modern History students visited the Sydney

Jewish Museum in Sydney. In a highly moving

experience, students heard first-hand accounts

of Holocaust experiences and reviewed

abundant historical evidence in the museum.

Year 10 History students

created a Holocaust picture

book for a younger

audience. Lorena Ramirez

produced an excellent

narrative version with hand

drawn images. The image of

the front cover of her book is included.

The Anzac Ceremony brought out the best in a

range of students at Albion Park High School.

Thanks to Jade Turk, Emily Fien, Olivia Quick,

Livinia Jay and Zach Elbourne for their

contributions to a memorable service.

Year 11 Business Studies students received a

visit from local business owner Glenn Haworth

of Haworth Guitars, Shellharbour. Student learnt

about founding a business and the challenges

of running a business in a highly competitive

industry.

Our Year 12 Geography class went on an

excursion to Minnamurra Rainforest as part of

our ‘Ecosystems at Risk’ topic. We had a

knowledgeable tour guide who informed us

about the history of the rainforest, its value, the

human impacts, endangered and threatened

species and the management strategies that

have been put in place to protect all aspects of

the rainforest.

We also participated in lots of fieldwork

activities, such as transect and quadrant

sampling of vegetation, soil and litter study to

check animal abundance, testing

of temperature, humidity, wind speed, pH

and light intensity and a freshwater study.

The highlight of our day was walking through

the rainforest and taking in the beautiful views,

while learning about the incredibly diverse

range of plants and animals that live there. It

was such a great day and we learnt so much.

Open Girls Hockey Team

On Friday 23 March the Albion Park Open Girls

Hockey team participated in the first round of

the CHS Knock Out Competition against

Bomaderry School at Croome Road.

The team this year is a mix of youth and

experience with girls from Years 7 to 11

represented. Despite the usual challenges of

building a team performance after limited

preparation and the unfortunate absence

of players through illness, the girls played well.

Following a strong warm up they quickly gained

the initiative in the match with a well struck

penalty corner goal from Teah Pearson. The

Bomaderry goalkeeper was in fine form making

a number of good saves but continued pressure

built on a strong defensive effort resulted in a

second goal for the girls. This time it was a

composed field goal from Amity Mayo after a

fine through ball.

Half time allowed for a little more tactical

discussion led by the largely unthreatened

Albion Park goalkeeper Remy Blackett and

resulted in an increasingly confident

performance from the team. Jessica Avnell,

Georgia Hartnett and Chloe Barton continued to

dominate the defensive zone zone while Briana

Inskip (captain) and Teah Pearson marshalled

the midfield. From this platform, Montana

Thompson and Dakota Bennett continued to

pose a threat from either wing. Briana was

denied twice by good work from the Bomaderry

goalkeeper but Kiarah Inskip netted three times

completing her hat-trick with a determined run

and fine finish in open play.

The girls now travel to Mulwaree in the coming

weeks for their second round game and with a

few more experienced players to add to the

team they will be hoping to enjoy a second run

out. Thank you to Mr Mayo and Sharni Barton

for umpiring the game.

Water Skiing Champion

Who knew that we had a budding water skiing

superstar in our student body? Well now,

hopefully, you all will.

Charlotte Keen (Year 8) recently contested the

National Barefoot Water Skiing Championships

in Adelaide in the last week of Term 1.

Competing in the Sub-Junior Division, Charlotte

came 3rd

in Slalom, 2nd

in tricks and placed 3rd

overall in her division. She was subsequently

selected for the Junior Australian Training squad

with the chance of being selected for Australia

at the World Titles in 2020.

What an outstanding achievement and we

bestow huge congratulations and a massive well

done to Charlotte on her sporting successes and

excellence.
