Talk about having your hands full in a season opener. Aledo has won three consecutive Class 4A Division II state championships. Yes, superstar running back Johnathan Gray has moved on to the University of Texas after shattering high school rushing records, but the Bearcats still have eight starters back from last year’s 14-2 squad. Two of those starters are linebacker Gunner Johnson and free safety Shea Wood, who combined for 270 tackles last season.

After originally having a team of Tulsa home-schoolers on the schedule, Highland Park will instead play the Borregos Salvajes, which translates to “Wild Rams,” for the third straight season. The Scots easily won the first two meetings against the only opponent from outside of the United States they have ever played. ... Monterrey Tec was also slated to play Longview this year and in 2013, but the series did not materialize. The Lobos filled the dates with a series with North Little Rock (Ark.).

The Bearcats should be one of the tougher opponents on the schedule for the Scots this season. Sherman has 13 starters back from last year’s 10-4 team that made it to the regional finals. Both the Bearcats and Scots were eliminated by Tyler John Tyler in the playoffs last season. ... The Bearcats return a 1,000-yard receiver in Jospeh Harvey, who had 10 touchdowns last season. Sherman also has linebacker Kahlee Woods back after a 156-tackle season in 2011.

The Jackrabbits had a tough time last season, finishing with just two wins over Waco University and Terrell. ... Forney’s biggest offensive weapon is running back Clayton Chadwick, who rushed for 674 yards and caught 28 passes for 259 yards for a total of eight touchdowns last season. ... The Scots and Jackrabbits were in the same district from 2004 to 2007. Prior to that, the teams had not squared off since 1931. The Scots have never lost to the Jackrabbits.

Even though North Forney has the youngest program in District 10-4A, the Falcons are coming off a big 10-2 season as a Class 3A school in its second year of varsity. ... The Falcons also have a new head coach in Lance Gary, who takes the reins from James Brown. ... Linebacker Forest Garza reg-istered 101 tackles last season. ... The Falcons have just four home games this season, including only one non-district home game against Ennis.

After knocking off Highland Park in the third round of the 2010 playoffs during their dramatic run to the state semifinals, the Pirates appeared to be a program on the rise. And even though Poteet fin-ished with a 7-3 record last season, head coach Randy Jackson’s squad missed out on the playoffs with a 5-3 district record. The Pirates won their first five games before losing to Corsicana, West Mesquite, and Lancaster in consecutive games.

The Wranglers are definitely a dark horse to win the district title this season. Although West Mesquite finished just 5-6 last season and lost in the first round of the playoffs, the Wranglers have several guys who will play Division I college football. Among those players is receiver Eldridge Massington, who has committed to Southern Cal. Safety Kameron Miles was last season’s District 15-4A Defensive Player of the Year.

Creekview is looking to bounce back from consecutive 2-8 seasons. ... The Mustangs have a couple of standout players in quarterback David Blough and cornerback Jordan Coleman, who both earned district superlatives last season. Blough was the District 9-4A Offensive Newcomer of the Year, while Coleman was the Defensive Player of the Year. ... The Mustangs will be the first varsity opponent for new school Saginaw Chisholm Trail, which is coached by former Scots assistant Randall Hugg.

Another former district rival of Highland Park’s, Newman Smith is also coming off a 2-8 season. The Trojans beat R.L. Turner and Creekview in 2011. The previous two seasons, they made playoff runs. ... Like West Mesquite, Newman Smith returns seven starters on each side of the ball. ... With 2,083 students, Newman Smith is the largest school in District 10-4A. ... No receiver on last year’s Newman Smith team had more than two touchdowns.

Like several of their new District 10-4A foes, the Tigers also went 2-8 last season. However, Terrell is the only one that went winless in district play. The Tigers beat Kaufman and Greenville to start off 2-0. ... Terrell has probably the most unusual non-district schedule in the district. The Tigers play road games against East Texas teams Rusk and Mount Pleasant, along with a home game against Dallas Carter. ... The Tigers also have a new head coach in Kevin Wilson.

Highland Park’s District 14-4A opener against Denison back on Oct. 9, 1998, was a

tough one. The Scots fell behind early, lost four defensive starters over the course of the contest, and ended up dropping a 24-22 decision in front of the home fans.

Sixty-eight home games, including two playoff contests, have come and gone for the Scots since then. But that gut-wrench-ing feeling of losing at home hasn’t reared its head at Highlander Stadium in the last 13-plus seasons. Let that sink in for a min-ute. Highland Park has not lost a home game this decade. Or the one before it.

“When you step on this field, you’re not just playing for yourself; you’re play-ing for your town and everybody who has ever played here before,” said Scots senior two-way starter Matt Bannon, whose brother John also played for Highland Park. “You know you can’t let them down and can’t let your team down. It’s so much different than any place in Texas because of the tradition we have here. It’s an honor to be a part of it.”

That 1998 season ended up being the last one for Scots head coach Scott Smith,

who also played quarterback at Highland Park and is now Rockwall’s head coach. After the Denison loss, the Scots won their final two home games to get the streak started. And when current head coach Randy Allen took over in 1999, the streak nearly ended in his first game, against Garland. Highland Park trailed, 15-8, in the fourth quarter at Highlander Stadium. The Scots rallied for a 20-18 win over the Owls.

“We had to come from behind a few times to win some close games,” said Allen, who is Highland Park’s all-time winningest coach with a 152-17 record at the school. “I remember Matthew Stafford led us to a late comeback against Wylie after converting a fourth down.”

There have been several close calls over the years. But perhaps the biggest bullet the Scots have dodged to keep the streak alive was a game that ended up never being played. Highland Park was slated to host Lincoln in 2004. Heavy rain forced the game to be canceled. The Tigers were 13-2 that season and made it all the way to the Class 4A Division II championship game, which they lost to Kilgore, 33-27, in overtime.

“It’s a great tradition,” Highland Park left tackle Ethan Beasley said. “It really

helps us focus so we can come out here and protect this beautiful stadium that’s been here forever. We can really come together and defend this house. It’s really a neat thing to be able to come and watch games and constantly see the Scots come through at home. It’s a real interesting experience to walk out of the tunnel and realize Highland Park hasn’t been beat in this place in a long time.”

There have also been some mighty impressive wins during the streak, includ-ing victories over Waxahachie, Coppell, Southlake Carroll, and Plano.

“With a lot of guys on our team, it’s kind of a family deal,” said center William Barns, a returning starter whose dad, John, played for the Scots and was a Parade All-American. “We grew up watching them win — that’s all we’ve

seen them do. Obviously, we don’t want to let people down. It’s just what we expect. The tradition is so rich and so real. It’s a really nice feeling.”

Highland Park’s home streak doesn’t appear to be in very serious jeopardy this season. The Scots play Monterrey (Mexico) Tec, Forney, West Mesquite, Carrollton Newman Smith, and Terrell at home. West Mesquite finished 5-6 last season and has some very solid athletes, but Forney, Newman Smith, and Terrell are all coming off 2-8 seasons. And the Scots have thumped Monterrey Tec the last two seasons.

“It’s something we don’t talk much about,” Allen said of the streak. “Our guys obviously have a lot of confidence when they play at home. It’s got to be a little bit of a mental thing for your opponents, too.”

It won’t take long for Highland Park to see just where it stands as a football team.

One game, to be exact. The Scots open the regular season

against three-time defending Class 4A Division II state champion Aledo tonight at SMU. Between the two teams, the Bearcats and Scots have won four state championships and played in five title

games since 2005. And even with All-World running back Johnathan Gray now plying his craft at the University of Texas, the Bearcats still provide a very serious opening test for the Scots, win-ners of 27 straight regular-season games.

“They were good before Gray,” Scots head coach Randy Allen said. “And they’re going to be good after him.”

Highland Park was supposed to have three starters back on offense, but receiver Charles Hubbard, who had 37 catches for 402 yards and a touchdown last season, is injured for the foreseeable future. The only other starters return-ing on that side of the ball are receiver Anthony Vallera and William Barns, who moved from right guard to center after

getting first-team All-10-4A last season.“There are a lot of question marks,”

Allen said. “A lot of the guys we’re play-ing with played on our JV Blue team last year. They got a lot of playing experi-ence, but the level of competition is not what they’re going to see against Aledo. They’ve prepared well. We think by going through spring training and play-

ing our own defense, that’s about as good of competition as we’ll find.”

Jet Tuma will step in as the start-ing quarterback, while Hank Howard and Rob Williams will look to take over at running back after the departure of three-year starter Preston Miller. Tuma,

a 6-2, 185-pound senior, is capable of making strong throws and taking off with the ball. And the Scots also have a very solid back-up in Colby Carpenter.

“He seems to have a good tempera-ment,” Allen said of Tuma. “He doesn’t seem to get flustered. He really seems to keep his poise. He wants to be excellent, but he doesn’t beat himself if he makes a mistake. We have good depth at quar-terback.”

Vallera will be joined in the receiv-ing corps by Hunter Feagans, Andrew Richardson, and Matt Bannon, who will also start at cornerback. Barns will start on the line alongside Ethan Beasley and Charlie McKenzie on the left, along with Hilton Kennington and Jack Howard on the right.

“There’s really strong leadership on the line,” Allen said. “Two of the captains [Barns and Beasley] are linemen. And the other guys are not captains but seniors

and great leaders. They worked hard in the summer to get ready.”

On defense, the Scots have much more veteran leadership. Five starters — line-backers Bryce Green, Tanner Houghton, and Guy Tom Kellogg, cornerback

Bannon, and safety Hayden Greer — return from last year’s team, which sur-rendered an average of 21.2 points per game. Kellogg was knocked out for the season after breaking two bones in his leg in last year’s opener. He was one of several

starters who suffered season-ending inju-ries. But that experience gained by the reserves should pay dividends this season.

“Everybody that was a back-up and came in to be a starter exceeded expecta-tions,” Allen said. “That’s how we were able to keep it going. We took Tanner Houghton from the JV Blue team, and he was our leading tackler in a couple of games.”

Special teams will also have some new faces starting in punter Jack Bjork and kicker Will Sanders. The Scots said good-bye to place-kicker Nick Rose, who is a walk-on at Texas. Highland Park will face a tough road schedule this season with trips to Sherman and Mesquite Poteet. The Scots are also in a totally revamped District 10-4A that does not have a single school back other than Highland Park.

“We’ve added a few wrinkles offen-sively that I’m eager to try,” Allen said. “It’s always a challenge to take a player who played on JV and fit them into our scheme.”

SCOTS 48, Everman 28Highland Park opened the season with

a big win over a quality opponent in the Tom Landry Classic. However, the vic-tory came with a price, as starting line-backer Guy Tom Kellogg was knocked out for the rest of the season with a nasty leg injury. Brady Burgin was solid in his first game as starting quarterback, throwing for 274 yards and four touchdowns. The previous season, he split time with Jake Howeth. Linebacker Alex Andrade made a team-high 11 tackles to come away with Defensive Most Valuable Player honors. The previous season, the Scots had to hold off the Bulldogs for a 27-21 victory.

SCOTS 46, Monterrey (Mex.) Tec 7Even while battling injuries, Highland

Park’s defense came to play against the Borregos Salvajes. The Scots limited Monterrey Tec to just 231 yards of total offense and one touchdown. The defense also contributed to the scoring when Mason Shaw returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. Preston Miller rushed for 149 yards and four touch-downs to lead the way for the offense. He averaged 16.6 yards per carry to abso-lutely shred the Tec defense. William Morris also caught a pair of touchdowns for the Scots.

absolutely dominated Sherman, which went on to advance to the regional finals. After giving up 42 points to the Bearcats the previous season, the defense stole the show in slowing down Sherman’s offense. The offense was no slouch, either, scoring eight touchdowns on its first 10 possessions of the game. Running back Preston Miller rushed for 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 16 carries, while quarterback Brady Burgin threw for 295 yards and five touchdowns to wrap up non-district play.

SCOTS 56, Rockwall 31Another week, another devastating

injury for the Scots. Dalton Stogner, who led the team in receiving in 2010, was knocked out for the year with a torn ACL in Highland Park’s District 10-4A opener. In addition to linebacker Hardy Davis, who was hurt in preseason workouts, Stogner was the third Scots starter to go down for the year. Former Highland Park player and head coach Scott Smith’s team jumped out to a 10-7 lead over the Scots. Preston Miller continued to roll with 249 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries.

SCOTS 58, Wylie East 30After falling behind, 17-14, Highland

Park got cooking. Brady Burgin threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to William Morris to give the Scots a 24-17 lead at the break. But the second half belonged to Highland Park, which scored on five straight possessions to cruise past the Raiders. Burgin finished with 305 yards and five touchdowns through the air. Morris caught three of those touchdowns on seven catches for 121 yards. Wylie East running back Jabari Anderson rushed for 314 yards and three touchdowns, while Highland Park’s Hayden Greer and Bryce Green combined for 37 tackles.

SCOTS 24, Wylie 21Saddled with a case of food poisoning,

starting running back Preston Miller was not able to play against the Pirates. It was back-up running back Jackson Hauser who scored on a 3-yard run with 20 sec-onds left to give the Scots their first lead

of the game. Hauser finished with 167 yards and two touchdowns. But things were not looking good for Highland Park when it fell behind 21-0. Hauser scored on an 11-yard run with 2:51 left in the first half. But it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Scots scored again to continue their furious comeback.

SCOTS 41, Pearce 27It was a milestone night for Highland

Park head coach Randy Allen, who picked up career victory No. 300 at the expense of the Mustangs. Allen became only one of 11 Texas high school coaches to achieve that mark. But it was far from easy. Pearce trailed by just a touchdown, 27-20, in the third quarter. The Scots got rushing touchdowns from Brady Burgin and Jackson Hauser to pull away. The Highland Park defense picked off six Pearce passes, including three intercep-tions by Luke Utley.

SCOTS 31, McKinney North 0The Scots wrapped up a playoff

berth by recording their only shutout of the season. Highland Park limited the Bulldogs to just 130 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers. Mark Gottsacker scored on a 62-yard intercep-tion return after picking off a pass for the fourth time in five games. However, quarterback Brady Burgin had a rough night, throwing for just 140 yards with three interceptions and no touchdowns. Preston Miller rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns on 11 attempts.

SCOTS 31, Rockwall-Heath 30 (OT)In a battle for the District 10-4A title,

the Scots came away with a narrow win over the last team to beat them in a dis-trict game. After kicker Nick Rose’s potential game-winning field goal was blocked at the end of regulation, Heath’s Rico Henderson opened overtime with an 11-yard touchdown run. However, kicker Ethan Smith’s PAT attempt hit the upright and was no good. Preston Miller punched the ball in from a yard out on fourth down on the Scots’ ensuing pos-session. And Rose booted home the extra point to lift Highland Park to the victory.

SCOTS 52, McKinney 15Highland Park locked up its sec-

ond straight undefeated regular season by cruising past McKinney. The Scots jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead and never let up. Receiver William Morris, who finished with eight catches for 174 yards, scored touchdowns on receptions of 34 and 13 yards from Brady Burgin, who was 17-of-29 for 264 yards. Mason Shaw also scored on a 48-yard intercep-tion return. The victory over the winless Lions also secured Highland Park’s sec-ond straight 10-0 regular season.

SCOTS 50, Frisco Liberty 7Highland Park opened the playoffs by

hammering Frisco Liberty at Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium. The Scots jumped out to a 29-0 halftime lead by domi-nating the over-matched Red Hawks. Liberty was limited to just 34 yards of total offense in the first half and 175 for the game. Highland Park’s defense also picked off a pair of passes, including one Hayden Greer returned 35 yards for a touchdown. Liberty did not even get on the scoreboard until after Highland Park had taken a 43-0 lead.

SCOTS 49, Woodrow Wilson 24Highland Park ran into a feisty

Woodrow Wilson squad in the second round of the playoffs at Lake Highlands’ Wildcat-Ram Stadium. The Scots’ defense gave up just 10 points to the Wildcats, who scored on a pair of inter-ception returns. Highland Park held a 28-17 lead at the half before putting the game away with touchdowns on three of its final five possessions. Woodrow fin-ished the game with 302 yards. Bruising running back Shaquille Dottin accounted for 165 of those yards. But Highland Park forced three turnovers, and the Wildcats lost the ball on downs on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter.

Tyler John Tyler 42, SCOTS 39After putting up a tremendous fight

and losing their starting quarterback to injury late in the contest at Waco ISD Stadium, the Scots fell to John Tyler in a battle of two of the state’s most storied programs. It was the fourth straight year Highland Park’s season came to an end in the third round of the playoffs. The Scots had a chance to tie things up with a 51-yard field goal attempt with 36 sec-onds left. But Highland Park was not able to get the snap down, and holder Hunter Halpin fired a pass that was batted down by the Lions to ice the win.
