The champs are here! The Vikings had a historic seasonlast year. They went a perfect 12-0on their way to their 11th statechampionship, the most in the stateof Oregon. It was Vale’s first champi-onship since 1993.“The longer the season went on,the more we realized we had a spe-cial team,” said new head coach JeffAldred, who was an assistant coachlast season. “We had extreme depthat multiple positions, which alloweda lot of kids to just play one way.”This season, the Vikings are look-ing for the repeat.“I have high hopes for this season,”Aldred said. “We have some goodyounger players that are transitioning

up. We have good size and goodtoughness. I feel we have a great coreto build around moving into thisyear.”High expectations typically comewith being the defending champions, but the Vikings are welcoming thatpressure.“These guys embrace having thetarget on their back,” Aldred said.“They kind of like it, probably a littlebit too much. They enjoy the factthat people know of Vale, the townyou drive into and has all those statechampionships.”While the Vikings lost a lot of tal-ent last season, they still bring backquite the cast.

The team returns sevenstarters from last year’s cham-pionship team.Commanding theship this season willbe a group of fourseniors: Derek Hiatt,Garret DeVos, Zac Jacobs and TraceCummings.“The one thing I can say aboutthese guys and our senior class isthey are very competitive,” Aldredsaid. “They don’t want to be toldthey can’t do anything. If some-one tells them they can’t dosomething, they are going totry even harder. I think thisgroup in particular is out toprove something.”Hiatt was a third-team all-state selection last seasonand will be the team’s deepthreat at wide receiver this

year. He alsoplays defensiveback.“I feel likethere are noexcuses on

He will also play a big part in the of-fense this year as the team’s fullback.“It’s the little things that you do thatmake you a great football team,”Cummings said. “Getting off the ballhard and making sure you do whatyou’re supposed to on every play. That’s what we pride ourselves on.”But these four seniors are not alone.Far from it, in fact. Joining them are aplethora of players any coach wouldlove to have.Their fellow seniors include quarter-back Gage Fortin, who will have the

tall task of replacing Josh Schoorl.Senior tight end/linebacker CodyTowers will be a prominent figure onboth sides of the ball.Lineman Riley Currey looks to an-chor both the offensive and defensivelines this season, while Austin Amickwill team up with Hiatt as a receiverand defensive back.

A new addition to this year’s seniorclass is recent Nyssa transfer JoshBuchholz, who figures to make an im-pact on both the offense and defense. The junior class includes linemenAndrew Collins, Michael Young andNic Fugate. In the secondary, the class has Rudy

Gomez and Dawson Eddy, both ofwhom will see some time at wide re-ceiver, too. Finally, Marquo Gomezwill get some time in the back fieldwith Jacobs and Cummings. The sophomore class looks to makean impact this season, too, with quar-terback/linebacker Cade Perry andlineman Wyatt Currey.“These younger kids are hungryand ready to transition to that nextlevel,” Aldred said. “They want toshow their mark.”Offensively, Aldred doesn’t plan onchanging much.“We run the ball at Vale,” Aldredsaid. “You go with your strength, and

we are going to have a good offensive lineup front and good running backs.”But Aldred still plans on throwing theball down the field, too. “I am really big in the vertical passinggame,” Aldred said. “You have to stretchthe field at times to keep the defense hon-est. We will do as much as we can there todevelop our passing game.” The defense for Vale will consist mostlyof a 3-4 base defense. But Aldred said theyhave the capability to give multiple looks.

“A lot of what we do here at Vale is wepay attention to our opponent and scoutthem extensively,” Aldred said. While Vale may have lost some key play-ers from last year’s championship team, the Vikings still bring back key pieces thisseason. All indications are that Vale’syoung talent will develop nicely this year. This is Vale football we are talkingabout, after all.“Tradition never graduates,” Aldredsaid.

Last season, Adrian wasarguably the most domi-nant team in the valley. They were not just good, they were untouchable. The Antelopes outscoredtheir opponents by a mar-gin of almost 3 to 1.

All of it culminated in aperfect 12-0 season andgave the school its veryfirst state championship.“It was pretty damn awe-some,” head coach PaulShenk said. “The commu-nity really supported us allseason, and the kidsworked hard all season.” This season, the

Antelopes are looking to goback to back.“I think we have a goodchance of the repeat,”Shenk said. “I think thisteam is more than ready todefend it.”With six returners com-ing back, the chances of arepeat certainly look prom-ising. Especially with thereturn of last season’s con-ference Player of the Yearand all-state quarterbackand defensive back ReaganShira. Shira will lead an of-fense that last season aver-aged an eye-popping 58points per game.He said the team’s mind-set hasn’t changed afterwinning the championship.“We are not going to beoverconfident and thinkthat we have earned any-thing,” Shira said. “We aregoing to work just as hardbecause we know howhard the other teams areworking.”

Joining him will be histwin brother and startingrunning back BrysonShira who, on the defen-sive side, will be one ofthe team’s starting line-backers.He said the team is eagerto be back on the field thisseason.“We are excited to getback out there and defendour title,” Bryson Shirasaid. “It will be differentthis time because everyonewill be coming for us, but itwill be fun.”Luke Campbell is per-haps the most versatileplayer on the roster as heplays fullback, linebackerand defensive end.Lineman Colton Nielsenwill be the driving forceon the offensive and de-fensive lines this season.Nielsen pointed out thatAdrian’s state champi-onship put all the otherteams on notice. “We were always here, but that state champi-onship made us a definitepoint on the map,” Nielsensaid. “Because of that, weare going to have to stepour game up and be onestep ahead of everyoneelse.”Rounding out this year’ssenior class is tight end andcornerback Mike Griffin.

“They are leaders by ex-ample,” Shenk said. “Theyare going to leave theirmark, and that is what Ilike.” This year’s senior classwill be joined by some tal-ented underclassmen.Junior linemen KennyPrenell, Drake Marquesand Roberto Ramirez willeach help Nielsen on theoffensive and defensivelines. Ramirez will also seesome time at fullback.Junior Marcus Furtado willsee time at both tailbackand linebacker. The sophomore class in-cludes cornerback EduardoMunoz, who Shenk said isone of the most athleticguys on the team. Munozwill be one of the startingcornerbacks.Rounding out the sopho-more class is cornerbackJuan Figueroa and line-men Andy Walker, DanielPrice and KirkladObendorf. “I feel these young kidsare going to step up for us,”Shenk said. “These kidshave been waiting in thewings out and it’s their

turn to contribute big.” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That willbe the team’s philosophy this seasonwhen it comes to their offensive and de-fensive schemes. The team will continue to run its pro-

style offense and have a base 3-3-2 de-fense.For the Antelopes, this particularseason will have extra meaning. Theyare not only going to be playing forthemselves and the community, buttheir teammate, Thomas Findley Jr.,who was just 14 when he died in ahouse fire July 5. “They realize that life is a very valu-able thing and that you better go outand try your hardest every week,”Shenk said. “Life can be a fragile thing, and you have to make the most of itwhile you can.” While Adrian will have a lot of pres-sure and expectation on them this sea-son, they appear to be up for the chal-lenge. With a great senior class leadingthe charge, expect the Antelopes to gal-lop back to the state championship onceagain.“We do have the target on our backbut I don’t think anyone is a goodenough shot to hit that bullseye,”Campbell said.

Following a yearthat saw them reachthe state champi-onship, there were ex-pectations that theNyssa Bulldogs wereprimed for a state titlelast season. And through the first

six games, it certainlylooked like it would hap-pen. The Bulldogsoutscored their opponents266-62 and were off to agreat 5-1 start. Then the wheels beganto fall off. The Bulldogs went 2-3the rest of the season andsaw their season end in thequarterfinals of the statetournament.“The competition on ourside was really tough,”

head coach Lee Long said.“It would have been niceto win one more gameand get to the semis, but Iwas happy where we end-ed up at.” This season, theBulldogs are stocked andreloaded with a bevy ofreturning talent theyhope will be the makingsof a special season. “We bring a lot back thisyear,” Long said. “We have32 juniors and seniors thisyear. We are pretty loaded, and generally that is a pret-ty good indicator on howyou are going to do.”

Topping this year’s upper-classmen will be seniorsEnrique Menchaca andJustin Simpson.“I feel we are going tobe a lot better than wewere last season,”Simpson said. “We arebetter suited this year andhave 16 seniors that allgrew up together and areall set for this final year.” Simpson will play run-ning back and defensiveback for the Bulldogs thisseason.Menchaca will also playrunning back and will be alinebacker on the defense. He said this year’s teamhas one big advantage.“There will be a lot ofkids this year that will befocused and won’t quit un-til the game is over,”Menchaca said.Simpson and Menchaca

Last season was a bit of a roughyear for the Ontario Tigers.

The Tigers finished the regularseason with a subpar 3-6 recordand were blown out 41-0 to SouthUmpqua in the state playoff game. Most of it had to due with the

team’s inexperience. The Tigerswere very young, to say the least.Going into last season the Tigersonly had a few players with any re-al game experience. The majority

JORDAN VALLEY

Last season, the JordanValley Mustangs took a bigstep forward. While winning two gamesmay not sound like a lot, itwas for them. It was thefirst season in three yearsthat the program had suit-ed up a varsity program.“We focused more on get-ting that experience ratherthan the wins or losses,”head coach Bryce Kershnersaid. “I thought it was agood season for us, becausewe were able to achievesome league honors and get

that recognition.”With four returners onboth sides of the ball, theMustangs are looking for abetter 2015 campaign.“Everyone got playingtime and reps last year, so Iexpect us to be able to takea huge step forward,”Kershner said. “I think wecan get to that district play-off and have a chance toplay for state.”In order for that to be-come a reality, theMustangs are going to haveto get great play from theirtwo big seniors, Jett Warnand Wyatt Stanford.“I will look to them to set

the tone in practice and ingames,” Kershner said. “Ineed them to be the exam-ple to all the underclassmenwe are going to have thisseason.”Warn will be the team’sstarting quarterback.“He has a lot of intangi-bles at quarterback,”Kershner said. “He sees thefield better than most peo-ple can. Jett makes playsthat most people wouldn’tbe able to [and does] thosesmall things that reallymake him a good player.” Stanford will play wide re-ceiver and defensive back.“He is going to be our vo-cal leader this season,”Kershner said. “He boostseveryone’s confidence andreally helps me rally theteam.”

But Warn and Stanfordwill not be the only impactplayer for the Mustangs thisseason. The team will alsoget help from a pair of jun-iors in tight end/defensiveend JJ Echave and leftguard/linebacker GarrettYouren.“These guys are thebiggest and strongest guyson the team,” Kershnersaid. “As a coach you could-n’t ask for more from theseguys. They have bothgrown by leaps and bounds. It will be exciting to seethem put that into actionthis season.”The Mustangs will run azone read up-tempo offense.According to Kershner, there will be a lot of three-step variations in the pass-ing game.

On the defensive side ofthe ball, the team will runa lot of blitz schemes andhave a gap-oriented 3-4defense.Kershner believes that ifthe team is able to executeits game plan this year, the Mustangs could be instore for a good season.“We have to approachpractice like we approachgames,” he said. “I have re-ally preached that to them

HARPER

Just a few short yearsago, Harper was a pro-gram that was just look-ing to win a single game. Now the Hornets areone of the best up-and-coming programs in thevalley. The team had its bestseason in recent memorylast year, finishing with a6-3 record, and if it had-n’t been for some ques-tionable officiating, theHornets would have beenin the state playoffs.“It was great, becausewe did a lot better thanin previous years,” seniorClayton Garcia said.“It was a good year, andwe all had a great time.” This season, the bar hasbeen raised, and the teamis looking for its best yearto date.“I think we are going tobe very competitive thisyear,” head coach LeeTiller said.“We have a lot of mate-rial to work with. Theyare very talented andtough kids. There is nohope about it; this team isgoing to the playoffs, andthat’s just the way it is.”Since taking over fiveyears ago, Tiller has runthe program with threekey philosophies, whichhe believes have turned

the program around.“Conditioning, execu-

tion and sustainment,”Tiller said. “If we dothose three thing consis-tently, we will win ballgames.”Tiller also pointed outthat the mentality willplay a key part this year.“If they walk on thefield with the propermindset, then we are go-ing to be OK this season,”Tiller said.Leading the horde willbe senior Dakota Allaire.“Dakota knows what todo, and he knows foot-ball,” Tiller said.“He knows his job outthere. He is the leader onthe team. I let him callthe plays out there, andwhat he says on the fieldis how it’s going to go.”Allaire will be theHornet’s starting quarter-back and one of theteam’s starting lineback-ers.“My strength has gottenbetter,” Allaire said. “Ihave been working out alot. I want to have thatsize advantage on every-body.” By his side will be jun-iors David Schweitzer andGarcia.Schweitzer is one of themost skilled, versatile andathletic members on theteam.“I have only had one

other running back withhis ability and talent,”Tiller said. “I can see himplaying at the college lev-el.” Last season, Schweitzeraveraged more than 150yards per game on theground and played bothlinebacker and safety ondefense. He said he likes themakeup of this year’steam.“We have good chem-istry this year,”Schweitzer said. “We allget along with one anoth-er, and I feel that is goingto be the difference thisseason.” Blocking for Schweitzerthis season will be Garcia. He also figures to be athreat on the other sideof the ball as one of theteam’s defensive lineman. He will be joined onthat defensive line by sen-ior Greg Chandler, whomLee calls a beast.“He is a junkyard dogand hurts people,” Tillersaid. Tiller plans on a wideopen offense with a lot ofmotion.“On every play, therewill be somebody mov-ing,” Tiller said.On the opposite side ofthe ball, Tiller will runeverything from a 3-3-2 toa 4-3 defensive scheme.Even with a tough con-

The Fruitland Grizzlies need little in-troduction.Over the last nine seasons, theyhave been to nine straight statechampionship games, with two ti-tles to their name. To most pro-grams, that would be morethan enough, but then again, the Grizzlies are unlike anyother program around.“It is just a special place tocoach and be a part of,”head coach Ryan Tracysaid. “Our kids worktremendously hard, andthey are tremendouslycommitted to not onlyfootball but to other sportsas well. 27, 2015 success.”The Grizzlies are coming off astellar season last year. Theywent 6-2 during the regularseason and once again wentto the coveted state champi-

onship game.Unfortunately, theycame up a little short.

This season theGrizzlies are, astheir teammotto says, aiming to“bring itback.”“Wewant tobring thestate anddistrictchampi-onship backto Fruitland,”senior Scott“Rocko”Mackenzie said.“The seniorscame up withthis becausewe’ve been closeso many times be-fore, and wehaven’t won the dis-trict title since ourfreshman year. Wewant to be the sen-ior class and theteam to get over thehump.”The Grizzlies havenot won a statechampionship since2010.Fruitland has fivestarters returningon both offense anddefense. One ofthose returners isMackenzie.

He, along with fellow seniorGarrett Tipton, will help lead thecharge for the team this season.Mackenzie and Tipton will makeup two-thirds of Fruitland’s back-field. Mackenzie will serve as therunning back, while Tipton willplay fullback.Joining them will be fellow sen-ior Kennon Smith. The three ofthem figure to be a three-headedmonster backfield for the Grizzliesthis season.“We just have to keep doingwhat we do best,” Tipton said.“That is pound the ball like we al-ways have.” Both Mackenzie and Tipton willbe vital on the defense as well,Mackenzie as a linebacker andTipton as a safety. Perhaps the biggest impact play-er for the Grizzlies comes in jun-ior Tyler Eiguren.Eiguren was a first-team all-con-ference and an all-state selectionas a tight end and defensive endlast season.“I am looking to have a repeatof last year,” Eiguren said. “I amjust trying to get better, and Ithink that I have. I have gotten alot faster and a lot stronger than Iwas last year.”Junior wide receiver CaseyRodriguez, at 6 feet 4 inches tall, will undoubtedly factor into theoffense as well. He is also sure togive rival wide receivers fits as adefensive back, too. Despite all the talent theGrizzlies have coming back, theydo have some big question marks, especially who is going to be theman behind center. The battlethis season is down to two: seniorJared Lasnick and junior ZaneJerman.Tracy wouldn’t budge on whohe thinks is going to be his open-

Like they have since this reporter played for theteam, Fruitland will run the wing-t offense, an of-fense the Grizzlies have perfected for more than adecade now.But the defense will be undergoing a little changethis season with new defensive coordinator RussWright. It will be a base 4-3 defense.“We have been working on it all summer, and thekids seem to enjoy it,” Tracy said. “It is somethingdifferent. We used to be a lot of man, and now weare going to try and play more zone.”To put it simply, the Grizzlies are a dynasty. Theprogram continually finds a way to not only wingames but get better each and every year. With yet another talented team, the Grizzlies couldagain be strong contenders for the state crown.

Last season started prom-ising, with the Wolverineswinning their first threegames. But they then pre-ceded to lose five straight.“It was very disappoint-ing to play as well as wedid early and not play welllate,” head coach JohnSrholec said. “You wouldalmost rather go the other

direction.” Over the last two sea-sons, the Wolverines haveonly won one conferencegame and five games over-all. With results like that, the program has indeedfallen on some hard times.“We have some work todo,” Srholec said. “We are

re-tooling and re-

vamping things. We are do-ing things differently thanwe ever have.” But a new season bringsnew beginnings, and theWolverines are hoping thisis the year they return toglory.“We all have a drive tokind of redeem ourselves,”senior quarterback Matt

Pritchard said. “In the pastfew years we have beenlacking. I think this yearwe all have the same de-sire.” To help them do that, theWolverines will have six re-turners on offense and fouron defense. Back on offense isPritchard, who wasa second-team all-conferenceselectionlast year.Pritchard tookover quarter-back du-ties last

season and is looking for abetter 2015 campaign.“I don’t want to be sec-ond team, I want to befirst,” Pritchard said. “Iwill be going for that.”Joining him offensivelywill be senior running backKen Nakamura, wide re-ceiver and running backChristian Claudio, sen-ior running backJacks Whitehurstand senior MarkGalligar, whowill be getting

hurt, we will have someone to take theirplace.” According to Srholec, the Wolverinesare changing things up on both sides ofthe ball, particularly on offense, wherethey are going to resemble a Rubik’scube.“We are going to be a weird mix,”Srholec said. “A mix of no wide re-ceivers and a ton of wide receivers. We are going to try to play to ourstrengths.”Srholec said his team’s strength isin his linemen.Defensively, the Wolverines willhave a four-deep defensive front.“A bend, don’t break defense is whatwe do,” Srholec said. “That is our conceptand who we are.”While there is no question that theWolverines have talent on this year’s team, they are still in rebuilding mode. Andwith the conference expected to beas tough as it’s ever been, itseems like it will be atough road for theWolverines to getback on top —something Srholecfully admits. “It is hard to say. In the past, I would say we be-long in the top tier because that is just who weare,” Srholec said. “I don’t know if that is wherewe belong right now. We have to prove it andshow we can do it.”With Fruitland, Emmett, Homedale and evenPayette expected to be tough in the conference,it is hard to see the Wolverines rising abovethose teams this year. That’s not to say theycan’t, because after all, this is Weiser footballwe are talking about. But the Wolverines need to establish them-selves early on if they are going to have any shotof putting their postseason woes behind them.

Adams’transfer to Oregon for hisfinal year of eligibility wasdelayed until he finished amath class needed to wrapup his degree at EasternWashington, where hewas a repeat Big SkyConference offensive play-er of the year.“I feel like every teamhas a new identity, theplayers who are out theredefine it,” Freeman said.“We’re going to see whatthis team’s identity is.”A year ago at this time,Freeman was generatingbuzz in fall camp, but histalents were still largely un-known outside his coachesand teammates because

Oregon closes its practices.Over the course of theseason, Freeman’s profilerose as Tyner struggledwith injuries and Marshallassumed more of a hybridreceiver role.He was expected to bepart of another two-pronged ground attack —a la James and KenjonBarner — with Tyner, whowas hampered last seasonafter injuring his shoulderagainst Washington. Butto start fall camp, theDucks were hit by thenews that Tyner had sur-gery and would likely missthe rest of this season.“We took a hit. He’s aversatile player and helped

us out a lot, but we’reready to bounce back,”Freeman said. “We’ve gota lot of other weaponsready to go and we can’tlet it bring us down.”Coach Mark Helfrichlikened Freeman to aMariota-type leader: speak-ing through his actions.“Initially, that’s not hisnatural deal to vocalizeanything. But he was anunbelievable worker fromday one, a great worker. When he is just that phys-ically imposing, doingwhat he does on the field,in the weight room, in theclassroom, in the commu-nity ... we need more ofthat,” Helfrich said.

Inexperienced QB trio battle for Beavs’ starting roleANNE M. PETERSONAP SPORTS WRITER

CORVALLIS

Oregon State freshmanSeth Collins is focusing onhimself, not on the outsidenoise about the Beavers’quarterback competition. It’s all speculation, any-way. About the only cer-tain is that the ultimatestarter will be someonewho has never beforeplayed in a college game.Joining Collins in vyingfor the starting nod areredshirt freshmen NickMitchell and MarcusMcMaryion.“There is a little pressurethere, but I try to just keepit about football,” Collinssaid. “At the end of theday it’s a game, and I try tokeep it like that.”The quarterback spot iswide open in the wake ofSean Mannion’s departure. The quarterback set the all-time conference record forcareer passing yards with13,600 and a school recordfor touchdown passes with83 before graduating to thepros. He’s now with the St.Louis Rams. The Beavers overall areunder the guidance of newhead coach GaryAndersen, who came toCorvallis from Wisconsinafter longtime coach MikeRiley’s surprising depar-ture for Nebraska.Whereas Oregon Stateplayed more of a pro-styleoffense with Mannion un-der Riley, Andersen is in-

stalling a spread offense. He’s looking for a QBwho is nimble on his feetas well as being a strongpasser.Collins appeared the ear-ly front-runner for the job.He verbally committed inJanuary after switchingfrom San Jose State and en-rolled at Oregon State ear-ly. As a senior at GraniteHills High School in SanDiego, he passed for 1,013yards and 12 touchdownswhile running for 988yards and 17 scores. He said he chose theBeavers because of the

chance to play right away.“I sat down with my par-ents, and any school Iplanned on attending, Iplanned on going in andtrying to compete for thejob,” he said. “Because ifnot, what’s the point?”Collins generated buzz inspring practice, then threwfor 175 yards and twotouchdowns while alsorunning for 74 yards inthe spring game.Speaking for the firsttime at the start of fallcamp, Collins was unruf-fled by the prospect of be-ing a freshman starter.

“You have to take a stepon the field, whetheryou’re a freshman, sopho-more or a junior, you haveto take that first step onthe field,” he said. “Takingmy first step on the fieldin the first game of theyear? It doesn’t bother me.I’m ready to go. It doesn’tscare me.”McMaryion, who helpedout on the scout team lastyear, came to the Beaversfrom Dinuba High Schoolin California, where hethrew for more than 500yards in a game as a junior.Mitchell also played on

the scout team last season, and was voted by his team-mates as the scout team’soffensive MVP. FromNorth Bend, Washington,Mitchell completed 6 of 13passes for 59 yards in thespring game and also ranfor 12 yards on five carries.“Whoever they end updeciding on — whetherthey have one quarterback, two quarterbacks — who-ever gets the job is going tohave our full support. Ithink it’s just about goingout there and improvingeach and every day,”Mitchell said.
