He said, “But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughtered the fattened calf” (Luke15: 30 NAB). He held his brother tightly to his sins. Holding people in their sin is all- too-normal a human experience. There are people who when, and if we hear that something happened to them, we silently utter our reservations. Sins seem to stick no matter how people try to change. But there is an alternative voice standing up for the woman’s sin. Jesus bends down and writes on the ground. This action of Jesus is the game changer. It is the alternative voice that goes beyond the law and seeks justice. Stoning the woman was lawful but unjust. No one commits adultery by himself or herself. However, Jesus could not ask them to let the woman go because doing so would tantamount to diminishing the authority of Moses. So Jesus made them make their decision; He said, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the one to throw a stone at her” (John 8: 7). He does not hold them, but he directs them to look at themselves deeper. Whatever they see in themselves would remind them what justice means. They walked away “one by one” alone and disorganized. The elders who should know more began the withdrawal. In the end, the woman hears an alternative voice from Jesus— “neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again."(John 8:11) Repentance is for everybody not only for those that are caught in crimes — what a lesson for us all. A Reflection from the Pastor’s desk…April 7, 2019 Year C The Fifth Sunday of Lent

This weekend we have another beautiful story that touches human life. A group of Scribes and Pharisees dragged a woman before Jesus who was guilty of adultery. We know that she was guilty because she was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now to pressure Jesus into standing by their action, they quoted the law to him and waited on his opinion about the woman and the act. Holding people in sin is not peculiar to the Pharisee and Scribes. Just last week we heard

as the older brother to the prodigal son couldn’t go beyond the crime of his brother. Call to Worship Good morning and Welcome to Sacred Heart Church. Today is fifth Sunday in Lent. In the Gospel we hear the story of the woman caught in the act of unfaithfulness, and dragged before Jesus for condemnation. Jesus does not condemn the woman but asks her to go and henceforth not to sin again. There is something more interested in our future than in our past. His name is Jesus. Please rise and join in singing hymn no… and know that God is good all the time.

Lenten Abstinence and Fasting Regulations

Everyone 14 years of age or older is bound to abstain from meat (and items made with meat) on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Everyone 18 or older, and under 59 years of age, is bound to fast on Good Friday. Only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law

does not oblige. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed minimal penitential practices. These guidelines can be found at: usccb.org
