NOVEMBER 6, 2016 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

May God Bless our Confirmation candidates who will be confirmed by the Most Rev. Arthur J. Serratelli, J.C.D., D.D. this coming Monday evening, November 7. This is a great milestone in your faith journey. Your journey became a reality through the dedication of our entire parish community uniting young people, adults, and clergy by ministering to each other through praying, sharing, listening, questioning, discovering and celebrating together. Confirmation does not conclude your religious education but rather draws you into full participation in the life of our church. I challenge each of you to be open to following the lead of the Holy Spirit in your life and contribute your gifts and talents to our parish and church….“Go Make a Difference!”

****************************************************************************************** Fr. George sleeps out to support Covenant House

I have accepted the challenge to Sleep Out on the streets of New York City with Covenant House on Thursday, November 17th. I do this inspired by the words and example of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. He has profoundly challenged me to be with and for our brothers and sisters who are in need. He has called me to go out into places where suffering exists and to be the healing and helping presence of Christ, bringing warmth and hope to young people who need it most. Thousands of kids spend each night on the unforgiving streets of our great cities. Countless others are staying with relatives or friends, dreading the day when there is no one else to take them in. And one night can make a difference. If you would like to sponsor me in this challenge, please visit www.covhou.convio.net and follow the participants prompts to find Fr. George Hundt. This information will also be available on our parish website www.svmnj.org. If you would like to donate by check via mail, instead of the internet, there are forms at the back of the church. Thank you for your support and please keep us in your prayers.

Jubilee for Prisoners Nov. 6, 2016

Pope Francis has designated the weekend of November 5-6, as the jubilee for prisoners. We have been looking for a way to unite our parish family with those who serve in NJ prisons. St. Vincent Martyr has a wonderful opportunity to help the Women at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility on the weekend of November 6th. The woman’s prison has recently opened a "Children's room" for children and their incarcerated mother to visits and spend some quality time together. They had been using a large meeting room that did not provide for a natural environment. They are currently working on a new room for women in the maximum security facility too. This is a chance for us to show compassion to incarcerated women and their families during this Year of Mercy. The woman’s prison is looking for games, toys, crafts, and books for children of all ages to fill these new visiting rooms. The toys/items need to be new and in their original packaging. The following are approved items:

Board Game: (no dice or fake money) Candy Land, Clue, Chutes and Ladders, Checkers, Chess, Jinga (stacking tower game), Pictionary, etc

Card Games: UNO

Puzzles: Insert for Infants to 500 piece+

Crafts: Coloring books, Washable markers and paints

Toys: Play food, Play cooking pots, Tea sets, Toy dishes

Books: All ages both in English and Spanish Items may be dropped off in the school lobby this weekend to be delivered to the facility on Monday, November 7. If you have any question about a toy, book, game or craft, please feel free to call Debbie Wooldridge at 317-361-6946.

PRAYER WEEKLY READINGS

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 A king tortured a Jewish family, and tried to make them violate the laws. They all refused to give in and violate the laws. All of the family members told the king they would rather die at his hands than surrender their hope of being resurrected by God. Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2:16—3:5 Paul prays that the Thessalonians will be strengthened by God. He also asks them to pray that God's word will continue to spread, despite the persecution of Christians that was occurring at that time. Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 Jesus encountered some Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection. Jesus refuted them by quoting Moses, who called the Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jesus then said. "God is not the God of the dead but of the living. All are alive for him."

MINISTRY

THANKSGIVING OUTREACH Preparations are underway for our parish community’s Thanksgiving Outreach. As many of you know, our parish assembles and distributes baskets of food for the hungry and the needy here in Madison. Baskets are also sent to St. Agnes parish in Paterson as well as agencies in both Paterson and Newark. You can help in several ways.

Prepare a basket (a sturdy box or laundry basket makes a great basket) consisting of frozen turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, fresh fruits and vegetables, condiments and desserts – all of the “fixins” for a Thanksgiving dinner. Please pledge a basket by taking a tag from one of the baskets on the tables at the entrances to the lower church. Each tag represents a specific family or individual. Detailed instructions for the preparation of the basket will be printed in a future bulletin.

Volunteer on Monday, November 21 to help assemble, collect and prepare baskets for distribution.

Volunteer to deliver baskets – locally – on Monday, November 21 between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. We can really use the assistance of the men of the parish for this. Please bring a flashlight!

Make a financial donation that will be applied toward the purchase of food for the baskets.

If you wish to help, please call Barbara Eutsler at 973-822-0387, send an email to [email protected] or fill out the form below and return it to the Parish Office, attn. Thanksgiving Outreach Coordinator.

I/We would like to help with the Thanksgiving Outreach. I/We will help assemble baskets during the day on Monday, November 21. I/We will help deliver baskets between 5:00 & 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 21. I/We would like to make a donation of $ towards the purchase of food for a basket. Please make checks payable to St. Vincent Martyr-Thanksgiving Baskets. Enclose this form with your check and return it to the Parish Office in care of the Thanksgiving Outreach Coordinator or place it in the collection basket. Name: Address: Phone:

A LETTER FROM OUR SEMINARIANS House of Discernment for the Priesthood, Boonton

Dear Fr. George… "I want to thank you very much for thinking of us seminarians and asking your parishioners to provide us with the toiletries that we really need. My brother seminarians and I were pleasantly surprised and happy when we saw all the things that were included in the gift. Please tell the parishioners that we appreciate their generosity and the time and effort they have put into gathering all of these items for us. My brothers & I will remember all of you in our daily prayers. Please pray for us that the Lord will give us the perseverance to continue in our preparation so that one day we will be able to serve Him at the Altar as one of His priests". Seminarians: Braillam E. Vanegas, Komil Riszka, Diego Monsalve, Daniel O. Rincon, Rjoy Bellecillo, Jesus Poinces, R. Quintos, B. Gellies, Y. Severno, Damer Tences

Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology

Msgr. George . . . "On behalf of the resident seminarians of Immaculate Conception Seminary I would like to thank you and the parishioners of St. Vincent Martyr Parish for the gift bags that were delivered for our seminarians earlier this week. Our seminarians are always deeply touched by the generosity of your parishioners and appreciative of their efforts on our behalf. As the Vice Rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary I make every effort to ensure that all of our seminarians are provided with the financial assistance they need to cover the cost of textbooks, car insurance, medicine, etc. so they can focus on the important work of academics studies and formation. While I sometimes forget to think about their need for more practical items such as laundry detergent, shaving cream, shampoo, etc., your parishioners never do! The generosity of your parishioners will keep them well stocked in these items for the better part of this academic year. Please extend our sincere gratitude to all the schoolchildren and families of St. Vincent Martyr Parish who contributed the great variety of "necessities" included in each bag. Please also extend our gratitude to all parishioners who worked to organize the collection and assemble the bags. A special thank you goes to Christine Farner and Julia Crimmins and her son, Robert who delivered the gift bags. As a small token of our appreciation, Christine, Julia and Robert were given a tour of the seminary and joined our seminarians and priests for Mass and dinner that day".

Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Robert K. Suszki, Vice Rector
