Magnanimous Musings

of Fr. John Robert Skeldon

I want to take a moment to thank Linda Dinsmore for her many years of service

to our parish of St. Bartholomew. Linda has decided to retire after 27 years of service here as the office

manager. Linda offered quiet and constant leadership especially of the office. We thank her for her dedi-

cated service and wish her a very happy and blessed retirement.

I also want to thank all of you for embracing the new communion flow last Sunday. It occurred to

me that the central sections of the church joining the outer (or peripheral) sections in a common pilgrim-

age to the altar is a liturgical embodiment of the call of Pope Francis for us all to go to the peripheries, to

the margins. God always starts at the margins and comes in to the center. As we make the communion

procession now, we liturgically embody that biblical and Franciscan (Pope Francis) prerogative.

I would like to invite all of you to the new Bible study that I will be starting on Thursday evenings

with a repeat performance on Friday mornings: the book of Jonah. After Ruth, it is probably my favorite

Old Testament book. We’ll discover similar themes as in Ruth. But the character of Jonah is far differ-

ent. The summons to magnanimity will be just as strong as in Ruth. I’d love to make the journey to Ni-

neveh with you. Now a brief reflection on the readings for this Sunday.

A parable is a story that joins together the common, everyday experience of human beings with

the strange and unique to say something about God and his kingdom. In the two parables that we hear

today in the gospel passage, one is unique to Mark and the other is one of the most famous of Jesus’ para-

bles.

We begin with the parable of the growing seed which is unique to the gospel of Mark. What

might we learn from it? First, the parable takes the common experience of planting and farming and then

adds the twist that the man goes about his normal business of “sleeping and rising,” while the earth does

the business of bringing forth the plant from the seed. It is almost as is if the man has little or nothing to

do with the growth of the seed into a plant.

Remember that the parable is taking a common human reality and giving it a spin to say some-

thing about God. The point seems to be that the in-breaking of the kingdom of God is something beyond

human control or dependent on a human time schedule. God works at his own time and in his own way.

He doesn’t depend upon human ability or inability, intelligence or stupidity, even faithfulness or unfaith-

fulness. What is impossible for human beings is possible for God (cf. Mark 10:27). What human beings

are called to is a life of patient endurance as God works everything out for the good. As St. Paul writes in

the second letter to the Corinthians: “…for we walk by faith, not by sight.”

The more famous parable of the mustard seed (found in all three synoptic gospels) continues on

the theme of the mysterious in-breaking of the kingdom of God into human life. Except now, the king-

dom is likened to a common shrub or bush that was viewed as a nuisance in the ancient near east. The

mustard bush could sort of appear overnight, much like a weed in a garden. It would eventually grow

into a large bush, but the thrust of the parable is based upon the seemingly overnight appearance of the

bush.

The kingdom of God is interpreted to be like this. God breaks into our lives, our reality, many

times when we would rather not have him. The values of the kingdom, of the gospel, the world views as

a nuisance or a weed that should be gotten rid of. God challenges us in our comfortableness and compla-

cency to remind us of a more important truth: we are to be people who make room for God and for others

in our lives, much like the mustard bush has space for the birds of the sky.

Let us ask God our Father to sow and grow the kingdom in us, so that when “…we all must ap-

pear before the judgment seat of Christ…” we may receive a good and generous recompense based upon

our openness to the in-breaking of God’s kingdom.

chamos hoy en el pasaje del evangelio, una es única a Marcos y la otra es una de las más famosas de las

parábolas de Jesús.

Empecemos con la parábola de la semilla que es única al evangelio de San Marcos. ¿Qué pode-

mos aprender de ella? Primeramente, la parábola toma la común experiencia de plantar y sembrar y le

agrega la sorpresa que el hombre prosigue a sus negocios normales de “dormir y despertarse,” mientras

la tierra hace su labor de producir el fruto de la semilla. Parece ser que el hombre tiene el mínimo o na-

da que hacer con el crecimiento de la semilla a una planta que produce el fruto.

Recuerden que la parábola está tomando lo que es común a la realidad humana y dándole un giro

para decir algo sobre Dios. El punto parece ser que la venida del reino de Dios es algo que está fuera

del control de lo humano o que no depende del tiempo o calendario de los humanos. Dios obra en su

propio tiempo y a su propia manera. No depende de la habilidad humana o la inhabilidad, ni de la inte-

ligencia o estupidez, ni de la fidelidad o infidelidad. Lo que es imposible para los humanos es posible

para Dios. La invitación que nos hace la parábola es a una vida de paciente perduración mientras que

Dios obra todo para el bien. Como San Pablo nos dice en la segunda carta a los Corintios: “Caminamos

guiados por la fe, sin ver todavía.”

La parábola más famosa de la semilla de mostaza (encontrada en los tres evangelios sinópticos)

continúa con el tema de la misteriosa venida del reino de Dios a la vida humana. Excepto que ahora, el

reino de Dios se compara a un arbusto o arbolito que se le consideraba una planta-plaga en el medio

nuestras vidas, en nuestra realidad, muchas veces cuando menos lo deseamos que venga a nosotros.

Los valores del reino, del evangelio, el mundo los ve como un estorbo o como una maleza de la cual nos

tenemos que deshacer. Dios nos desafía en nuestra comodidad y en nuestra autosuficiencia para recor-

darnos de una verdad más importante: somos personas que tenemos que hacer espacio para Dios y para

otros en nuestras vidas, tal como el arbusto de mostaza hace espacio para las aves del cielo

Pidámosle a Dios nuestro Padre que siembre y haga crecer su reino en nosotros, “porque todos

tendremos que comparecer ante el tribunal de Cristo, para recibir el premio o el castigo por lo que haya-

mos hecho en esta vida.” Que recibamos una buena y generosa recompensa por habernos abierto a la

venida del reino de Dios.

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within par-ish boundaries or be registered in the parish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be bap-tized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godpar-ents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 9th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need to use the nursery while attending this class.
