July Magazine
We hope that by July we will be able to deliver some paper copies to people who are not online. We would prefer as many people as possible to continue to have the pdf version of the magazine in the future. As things are at the moment we cannot ask out volunteers to deliver magazines. We can post copies to people who are shielding/isolating or who are not online.
We would love to hear from any reader with contributions of interest and especially what the children have been doing in response to the Storytelling Services we have streamed.
Please send any items to your usual Editor (see opposite) by the end of the day on Monday 15 June 2020.

From the Ministry Team As I write this letter in the middle of May we have just begun to move into the first stage of easing the Covid-19 restrictions. Last week, the slogan that we had all become very familiar with “Stay home” was changed –somewhat controversially – to “Stay alert”. “Stay home” was linked to very clear restrictions. We all had to stay at home except for a few exceptions –essential work, medical care, exercise and shopping for essentials. On the whole the British public complied –and that was made easier by the simplicity of the message “stay home”. However, the Prime Minister altered that message to a request to stay alert. This came along with some easing of restrictions on ” was relatively straightforward (though some decisions had to be worked out case by case). Now we have moved into a more nuanced phase in our re-sponse to the pandemic. It seems that we are responding less well to the new guidance because we are required to use common sense, make some judge-ments and begin to discern what risks are appropriate. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson explained in a newspaper article on 17th May, that living through this new phase and into the future was more complex because it is a complex prob-lem that we are facing. It’s rather like that when we look at human behaviour more generally. Life is complex and guiding our response to people and situa-tions, shaping our behaviour - such as our thoughts, words and deeds – is com-plex. Every situation is different, every person is distinctive each response is unique. If we look at the history of God’s guidance to the human race on how to live their lives in accordance with his law, we see a similar story of moving from ten clear-cut commandments to a more subtle interpretation given through Jesus. “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgement.” (Matthew 5:21). Jesus understood that the underlying emotion would lead to thoughts and deeds which might eventually in some cases lead to murder. In following the commandments of God, in bringing our wills into line with God’s will, we need to look deep into our hearts because that’s where the cause lies. In this example, we need to discern what anger feels like to us and looks like to others, as well as understanding a definition of murder. During the Last Supper, Jesus issued a new over-riding commandment to his disciples. “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35). Our response to this commandment requires not just external compliance but a
11
change of heart. That change of heart will guide our thoughts words and deeds as we seek to live out that commandment. It helps us to recognise what loving one another means for each person in each situation. It helps us to choose how we remain constantly patient and kind with no limit to faith, hope or endurance, keeping no score of wrongs, always protecting – not just our family and friends but our enemies. The change on the inside helps us to make the choices that will show on the outside. We need to change on the inside so that we are filled with love until there is no room for anything else that might spoil God’s image in us. As the theologist William Adams Brown wrote: “We need to free ourselves from the idea of God’s law as statute imposed upon us from without and to substitute that of his spirit as a principle governing life from within.” But if this seems a tough challenge, we do not face it alone. Jesus sends us power from on high, the Holy Spirit to guide, inspire and strengthen us. Rev’d Trish

The Mere
I spread myself for miles around Except for ripples I make no sound
I look up to my tall stone friend With leafy trees around each bend.
My friends the geese, the wild ducks too Come to visit all day through
My reed beds shelter lots of life The mallards, coot and moorhen too
But underneath my waters deep live secrets that we’ve put to sleep.

MILLINGTON PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The Annual Parish & Quarterly Meeting took place remotely on Tuesday 5
th May 2020.
ANNUAL PARISH & QUARTERLY MEETING: Due to Covid-19 this meeting has had to be held remotely due to lockdown restrictions imposed by the UK government. Cllr D Flanagan opened the Annual Parish meeting at 2.30pm and welcomed those present. The election of the officers took place and Cllr Diane Flanagan was voted to remain as the Chair. Financial Report IT WAS RESOLVED that the annual report for the last financial period 2019/20 was approved by Council and will be advertised on the website once completed by the auditors.
15
Observations: It was discussed by the Cllrs that maybe the PC could spend some money on a new noticeboard or have refurbished, new glass is needed on the Chapel Lane board and a backboard. The sign also needs cleaning and repainting. Quotes are to be gathered. Action: To email Ward Councillor Kate Parkinson to request more signs at
Chester Road at the end of Chapel Lane and angle on the corner. Chester Road onto Millington Lane before you go over the bridge. Same location as above, sign showing Millington Lane. There are also street signs that are being pinched Chapel Lane for one.
Open Forum: Due to Covid 19 and the government restrictions the public were not allowed to attend the meeting. With that in mind a five-day window was opened up to ena-ble the parishioners, from the 27th April until the 1st May to right in with any questions. The questions would then be answered and recorded in the minutes.
Public Rights of Way: The following response from CEC was received in regards to complaints re-garding Millington footpaths FP1 & FP2. [This footpath has been added to the strimming list this year and will be cut in May and August. However, the contractor is in lockdown (shielding) until the third week in May so there will be a delay in the annual cuts this year. Sorry for the inconvenience, but with this pandemic some of the normal procedures are being compromised. Our annual vegetation budget has been cut by 20% this financial year so I am having to remove some paths from the list, especially ones that are not well used. So although this path will be cut this year, due to the numerous com-plaints, I will be removing others off the list so that I can remain within budget.]
Planning applications: Council was updated on the registered and decided planning applications for:
• 20/0567M - 29, Whitehouse Road, Bucklow Hill WA16 6RG
• 20/1697M – Rushford Cottage, Millington Hall Lane,Millington,WA14 3RP
• 20/1652M- Stamford Arms, Lymm Road, Little Bollington, Cheshire. Casual Vacancy & Local Concerns Please contact the Parish Clerk via the Millington Parish Council website www.millingtonparishcouncil.co.uk or via email [email protected] if you are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor or have any local concerns you wish to bring to the Parish Councillors’ attention. The next Parish meeting is due to take place on Tuesday 4
th August 2020. Time
and venue will be decided nearer the date; please refer to the notice board.
Following meetings; Tuesday 3rd Nov 2020: 7.30pm
All Parishioners are welcome to attend.
16
Virtual Meeting of the Deanery Synod, 18th May 2020. Because of the Coronavirus lockdown at this time, the Meeting had to be conducted via zoom on our laptops or tablets. Revd. Canon Professor Loveday Alexander was the Speaker and her subject was. "Calling All Gods People - Everyday Faith in Everyday Life.” Participants were asked to think about "Who Does God Call" It begins with creation. To be made uniquely - in the divine image and likeness is to be called for a purpose, for God. We live in God's world and wherever we go, God is present and is at work calling us to fulfilment. God calls us as a people and calls each one, and people respond to God's call in different ways as Jesus asks different things of them. It is not only based on Ministry on a Sunday but in all walks of life and workplace. Only 2% of people are ordained and 98% not. God is at work in our lives, often through the gifts and personality we have. Key culture shifts are needed to encourage and equip lay people (the 98%) to follow Jesus confidently in every sphere of life and for interaction between ordained and lay, recognising their gifts. A Report has been put out by a team at Westminster on the implementation of strategies nationally. Reference was made to several workplace scenarios where people explained how they experienced God's influence in the way they re acted with people and situations. To conclude: listen, pray, worship, witness. Other news:- The Rural Dean then reported that the new Bishop of Chester had been appointed - The Rt. Rev. Mark Tanner, Suffragan Bishop of Berwick, in the Diocese of Newcastle. No date was fixed for his Enthronement but it would probably be in the Autumn. In the meantime, the new Bishop would like Parishes to create a video about what God is doing in our lives and the lives our community, this can then be put on social media. All Ordinations are put back to Michaelmas but Curates will be paid from the date they have would have been Ordained. The Rural Dean said the new Vicar for the Peover Churches would be Virtually Instituted on 22June 2020. Irene Roberts. Deanery Synod Rep. St. Paul’s Church, Tabley.
17
The New Bishop of Chester (Picture on opposite page) You may remember that some time ago, parishioners were asked for their recommendations for the next Bishop of Chester, and no doubt you will have heard, after passing through many stages of consideration, a Bishop has now been chosen.
On 12 May 2020 No 10 Downing Street, announced that The Queen approved, at the recommendation of the Prime Minister, the appointment of The +Rt Revd Mark Tanner, 2nd Suffragan Bishop of Berwick (in abeyance since 1572) in the Diocese of Newcastle, as the 41st (since 1541) Bishop of Chester. This will be a return for him and his Wife Lindsay a Social Worker, as he was ordained in Chester, and his children Jonathan and Pippa, now at University, were born there.
Bishop Mark has an interesting background. He was born in Canada in 1970, had a farming background, was educated at Loughborough Grammar School, Christ Church Oxford, and then studied theology at Durham and Liverpool, before holding posts in the North East. His interests are vehicles, particularly motorbikes (he is a volunteer rider for Northumberland Blood Banks) and he is also a qualified diver.
With so much experience, particularly in the field of education, as an Army Chaplain, in his writings and publications, and sense of fun, Bishop Mark is ideally qualified to be the next Bishop of Chester, and his appointment is wholeheartedly welcomed in the Diocese. Despite lockdown, it is hoped he will be able to take up the position by the Autumn.
Brenda Folds – St Paul’s Over Tabley
The Mere and Tabley Community Club Our Club remains closed under current guidelines. I feel that social clubs along with pubs and restaurants will be the last to be opened up. We have however opened the bowling green under strict regulations from County Bowling Associ-ation. A booking system, two people only on the green and bowlers have to be members of the club. Any members wishing to book a time, please contact Nick Harris on 0160644876.
We will be welcoming the vital blood donor service again at the beginning of June.
A few of our members have been doing some maintenance work, abiding of course by distancing rules. The bowls pavilion has had new boards and a coat of paint. Our greensman is keeping the bowling green well maintained. We are hoping to have the car park repaired and a new patio area laid as soon as our contractor is able to operate again. So something to look forward to.
Alan Greenway, Chairman.

News from Little Bollington Parish Meeting Bus Service – Progress
You will recall from last month’s news that we met with Councillor Craig Browne, Deputy Leader of Cheshire East Council. We provided a report to Councillor Browne and a practical proposal for reinstating a bus service connecting Lymm, Agden, High Legh and Little Bollington with Altrincham. This involves making changes to existing services connecting Partington, Dunham Massey and Altrincham. It therefore requires a coordinated approach by Cheshire East Council, Warrington Borough Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).
A local resident took up the matter with TfGM. Their reply stated: “we would be willing to work with Cheshire East Council if they found a solution that was mutually acceptable, sustainable and possible within existing resources”. We have forwarded this communication to Councillor Browne as this gives encouragement to our proposals, which we believe meet these criteria. We have again asked that they be given detailed consideration and we have requested an update report. Little Bollington Community Support
A support service to help local people with their shopping is running effectively. Residents send in their shopping orders which are then undertaken by volunteers from either Budgens at Broomedge or the Co-op at Heatley, near Lymm. Where possible the shopper collects the order from the shop after it has been prepared by the volunteer. Where this is not possible, the shopping is delivered to the person’s front door. We are very grateful to Eva Jones of Coe Lane who manages the Co-op shopping service every week. We also appreciate the helpful support of Budgens and the Co-op in making this possible.
Please remember that we now have a Community Support Service in place for residents in Little Bollington, Millington and Bollington Mill. If you need help of any sort, get in touch with one of our Community Champions listed on the leaf-let delivered to every household. Or contact the Parish Clerk. Many thanks to the 25 Village Volunteers who have offered their services to help people in the community. LITTLE BOLLINGTON VE 75 CELEBRATIONS
Thanks to prompting by Giselle Rusted the 75th anniversary of VE day was not
forgotten in Little Bollington. Giselle obtained all the ingredients for a celebration afternoon tea and delivered them to every household on Spode Green Lane and Coe Lane.
Many other people around the village took up the idea and sat out in front of their houses for afternoon tea. Houses and gardens were decorated with bunt-ing and flags. Strains of Vera Lynn and 1940s bands were heard everywhere.
19
Many people, such as Irene and Bernard Wright, created their own decorations by hand – see photos. Some residents on High Field and Park View held a socially distanced gathering on the green.
At the last minute Rev. Phillip Robinson obtained a dispensation to allow the church bell to ring out at 7.00pm – the first time it had been heard since the lockdown started 6 weeks earlier. While a mood of celebration prevailed, people remembered and paid tribute to the heroism and sacrifice made by the people of Britain 75 years ago. Our deprivations in this difficult time fade to insignificance when compared with the huge losses they suffered to win the freedoms we still enjoy today.

SECRETS FROM THE LOCKOUT LARDER by Peter & Adelaide Williams
Adelaide and I have been cooking for the whole of our married life. I started at the age of 10 helping out in my grandmother’s small private hotel. I have always been fascinated with food and wine luckily it’s a passion I have been able to share with the whole of my family and during a rich seam in our lives travel the world promoting culinary excellence.
At this time of terrible stress and difficulty we thought it would be fun to share some of the more simple dishes that we found pleasurable when time, money and inclination are in short supply. They are, in effect, a distillation of sixty years of cooking, eating and drinking.
Eating with friends and family is the ultimate act of social communion or as the old sailors used to say ‘swinging the lantern’ as they sheltered from the storm.
Here we offer ideas for supper dishes or starter, main and dessert – as you wish.
Welsh Rarebit (Rabbit)
The real name is open to debate, either way it is delicious as starter or light lunch/supper.
300g mature cheddar cheese grated 1 large tablespoon Dijon mustard Splash Worcester sauce 1 large egg Chopped chives (optional) Salt & black pepper Method Place ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Season to taste. Prepare lightly toasted bread and spread generously with cheese mix. Place under grill until nicely brown and puffed up souffle like. Serve with chutney.
For a touch of luxury (croque monsieur style) place a slice of ham on the toast before adding the cheese mix.
Salmon Fishcakes Serves 2 people – makes 4 fishcakes
250g Anya Potatoes (or any waxy potato)
1 small red onion finely chopped
half of red or green pepper finely chopped
2 tbsps olive oil
4 gherkins finely chopped
1tin red wild pacific salmon in oil 250g
Seasoned flour for dusting
2 free range eggs
Salt & pepper

The Sign
Readers of St John’s Parish Magazine usually receive an insert called The Sign. You may be wondering whether this will be available during the current crisis. You can access it online by going to this link where you will find a page turning version of the June issue of The Sign.
https://publications.hymnsam.co.uk/emags/SignJune20/index.html
Method
Boil the potatoes in their skins for 15 mins – do not overcook. Then cool under running water and dry. Grate carefully with the skin on.
Fry onion & pepper in 1 tbsp oil until softened.
Drain salmon and remove any bones & skin.
In a bowl combine the potato, onion & pepper, stir in gherkins and salmon sea-son well and fork through breaking up any large pieces of salmon.
Take the oiled ring mould, place on a floured dish and press in the salmon mix. Turn onto a generous quantity of flour in a bowl and dust sides & top with flour. Lift and push out onto a tray.
Fry in shallow oil 5 to 6 minutes each side (until crispy outside).
Poach eggs and serve on top of a fishcake accompanied by hot marrowfat peas.
Recommended wine – Muscadet or any crisp white.
Lemon Pudding Serves 2/4 people 4 eggs 2 large lemons 225g caster sugar 25g butter 50g plain flour 475ml milk (I use long life) Method Separate the eggs. Put the yolks, grated rind & juice of the lemons, sugar, butter & flour into a processor and blend. Beat the egg whites until firm and fold into the liquid then pour into a 1.5 litre greased ovenproof dish. Place dish in a suitable roasting tin and pour in boiling water to surround dish. Bake in oven pre-heated to 150C for 30-35 mins. Tip: If you don’t have a blender to hand – Rub the butter into the flour, add the egg yolks, grated rind & juice of the lemons and sugar and mix with a little of the milk until smooth then add the remaining milk.
Thank you to Peter and Adelaide - more recipes to follow next month.
