FIRST STEPS11TH JANUARY 2017
THE EPIPHANY, ARRIVAL OF THETHREE WISE MEN
It is a chilly morning with some rather grey lookingclouds but also some hopeful signs of brightnesswhen our naughty little sheep looks out of thewindow. He’s looking forward to our First Stepsservice this afternoon and so are his friends. It isquite bright for our walk up to church and thoseanimals are all soon settled comfortably in theirusual places as Jan, Linda and I get everythingready for our service as usual. We’re using arather bigger altar today because figures of Mary,Joseph, baby Jesus and the three wise men arejoining us. Out naughty little sheep and the glitterydragon are over awed by these illustrious figuresand looking forward to hearing our story. Whenwe are ready and the church doors are opened,we are joined by Mum Sarah and little girl Evelynwho are first in today. Others soon come alongtoo and with jingle bells jingling merrily and ourcandles lit, we begin our service.
Today we are remembering the visit of the threewise men to Jesus. They’ve travelled a very longway, haven’t they? They’ve travelled day andnight, up hills and down valleys and across plains, following the brightest star you ever did see. Theyhave studied many books and examined manystar charts and it seems that this star means thata new King has been born for the Jews and thesethree very clever men are very keen to see him.But they make the mistake of assuming that aKing will be born in a palace and they stop off inJerusalem, at Herod’s palace expecting to findJesus there. Herod is not at all happy to see them.He doesn’t like the sound of this new King, coming to threaten his power. But he is pleasantto the wise men. asking them to return when they
have discovered the whereabouts of this specialchild so that he too may go and worship him.
Of course, eventually the three wise men do findJesus with his mother Mary, and his earthlyfather, Joseph. The star is still shining brightlyoverhead as Caspar, Balthazar and Melchiorpresent little Jesus with their precious, welltravelled gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They are very happy to have finally found thisbeautiful heavenly child but they do not go backto Herod, who has murderous plans for Jesus.Having been warned of this in a dream, they allreturn to their homes by another route. And stillthe star shines brightly in the heavens.
What a great story! Our naughty little sheep andhis friends have been spellbound by it. We havealso had the chance to jingle our bells as we sang“Twinkle, twinkle little star” always a favourite, along with “Away in a manger”. Everyone is veryquiet as we say our prayers, thanking God forbringing us together today and for His great lovefor us, shown in the life of Jesus. Then we blowout our candles and our service is over. Out intothe hall we go for a drink, a biscuit or two and timeto play and chat. It is so good to be together againin this New Year. Our naughty littlesheep and hisfriends enjoyw a t c h i n geveryone havinga good time andhope that they willall join us again forour next FirstSteps service on 8thFebruary. How theweeks fly by!
God BlessRosemary Austin.

Family storiesfrom WW1Bombardier Alfred John CookeBombardier Alfred John Cooke of the RoyalGarrison Artillery, Devon was married to EvaBlanche Darch (my grandmother) in the spring of1915. He died on 6 February 1917 aged 25. I wrotein the magazine a while ago about how I had tracedhim and visited his grave. His name is on the war memorial in Ilfracombe,Devon. Ilfracombe library provided me with thisnewspaper article and photograph.Bombardier A. J. Cooke KilledOfficer's Eulogistic Letter to Deceased's WifeAnother Ilfracombe soldier to give his life for hiscountry at the front. Bombardier Alfred John Cooke,R.G.A, only son and child of Mr and Mrs J.H. Cookeof 2 Ashley Terrace. The sad news was conveyedby a letter received by the deceased's wife who isliving with her husband's parents. The letterreceived on Tuesday morning reads as follows:
Heavy Battery, R.G.A France, 7th February 1917Dear Mrs Cooke, I am very sorry indeed inhaving to tell you of the very sad death of yourhusband, which occurred yesterday afternoonin the Battery. We all – officers and men - felt itvery much, as from high to low he was alwayspopular and held in the highest esteem by all ofus, and we shall miss him very much, not onlyfrom a service point of view, but as from thepoint that we have lost a good comrade. It may be a comfort to you to feel that his deathwas instantaneous and that he did not suffer inthe least.I should like to tell you that your husband wasalways one of our best non-commissionedofficers, and I had hoped shortly to give himwell-deserved promotion, but the Fates haddecided otherwise and we must feel that hereceived a promotion far greater than anyhuman being could give him. But he has left uswith many pleasant memories of his contribution
and work and I felt it may be of some comfortto you to know that by all of his comradesBombardier Cooke was considered one of thebest. If at any time or in any way I can be ofassistance to you I shall always be extremelyglad to do what I can, and please rememberthat you always have a friend willing to help inany way possible.Wishing you all the comfort and happiness youcan have at such a time.
Bomb’r Cooke was in his 26th year and, when thewar began, had been in the Ilfracombe Territorial's
for about four years. In June last he was granted amonth's leave, but went away at the end of threeweeks, going over to France. He wrote homeconstantly, and his wife received a letter from himonly on Saturday, saying he was in perfect health. The late Bombardier Cooke was an enthusiasticfootballer. Before the war he was, for several years, the hon. Secretary of the Ilfracombe Football Club.Much sympathy is felt with the widow and parentsin their bereavement.Alfred Cooke is buried at Les Boeufs MilitaryCemetery on the Somme.

MOTHERS’ UNION10TH JANUARY 2017
Christine Felstead, famed cake maker andcake decorator came along to our Mothers’Union meeting this evening loaded withready made icing, rolling pins and all kindsof useful bits. Many of us will have seenChristine’s cakes raffled at our SummerFayres and Christmas Bazaars or seensome of the special cakes that she hasmade for various occasions such asordinations, birthdays or weddinganniversaries. Not only are the cakes
delicious, whether they are rich and fruity, vanilla or chocolate sponge, or even glutenfree, the iced decorations are alwaysspectacular and beautiful. It means thatcutting them is really quite a sadexperience because it is the destruction ofsuch lovely crafted work but the cake isalways delicious so that sort of makes upfor it!Our meeting began with prayers, led byJulie Hill and then Christine introduced usto the finer points of making roses fromspecial fondant icing. Of course, becauseof her many years of experience, shemade it all look so easy. All we had to dowas to roll out some very pretty apricot, orpink coloured icing very thinly and then cut
out petal shapes in various sizes. That allsounds so easy, doesn’t it? We were eachgiven a little polystyrene bud on a littlewooden stick around which we were toform our rose, very carefully, petal by petal. There was even a little bit of green icingand a special cutter to make the calyxaround the bottom of the flower.Abracadabra, if only I had got a magicwand my rose would have looked asbeautiful and delicate as those thatChristine had crafted but I guess there issomething to be said for years of practice. Why should I become an expert in lessthan an hour? However we all had greatfun, trying our very best, with her expertinstruction, to make something resemblinga rose. In the end, though some of ussuddenly developed fingers like a bunchof bananas, we were all pretty happy at
what we had been able to achieve in sucha short time. So many, many thanks toChristine for her time and her boundlesspatience. It was much appreciated. Our next meeting will be held in the churchhall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 14th Februarywhen we will be holding our AGM and Sueour vicar will celebrate Holy Communion.Everyone is most welcome to join us aswe look back on the year that has just goneand look forward to the year ahead.

KIDSCORNER
Christ Church Milton-Next-Gravesend Page 17 FEBRUARY 2017
KIDSCORNERWhere is Jesus
The little town of Nazareth was buzzing with excitement! They were getting ready for a visit to God’stemple in Jerusalem.
The fathers were busy with the packing. The mothers were busy with the food. And the children wereeverywhere!
Jesus was going for the very first time. He was only twelve years old.
When they got there, the city was crowded. Its narrow streets werepacked with people, all going to God’s temple.
There was a wall all around the temple, with big gates – like a castle.Inside was a big open square and more walls.
Joseph and Jesus crossed the square.
In the shade by the walls the teachers sat. They were telling thepeople about God and how to please him. They were answering questions.
Jesus wanted to stop and listen, but Joseph hurried on.
That night the family had a special meal. They told the story that everyone loved – how God had helpedhis people to escape from Egypt, long, long ago. Then it was time to go home. The fathers were busywith the packing. The mothers were busy with the food. And the children were everywhere!
No one noticed that Jesus was missing – until bedtime. Jesus was lost! No one had seen him all day.Mary and Joseph hardly slept, they were so worried. As soon as it was light, they went back to
Jerusalem, looking and looking for Jesus.
At last, they came to the temple. And there he was, safe and sound, with theteachers – listening and asking questions.
“Jesus!” Mary cried. “We’ve been looking for youeverywhere. We’ve been so worried.” Jesus lookedsurprised. He wasn’t being naughty. He never did badthings.
“Surely you knew I’d be here. The temple is my Father’s house,” he said. Jesusknew that God was his Father.
Then he got up at once, and went with them.
