CHURCH ETIQUETTE
Chewing Gum The question has been asked: “Does chew-
ing gum break the Eucharistic fast?” The answer:
Chewing gum is not a food and therefore it does not break
the Eucharistic fast. However, a Catholic who intends to
receive Holy Communion must ask himself/herself if it is
proper to receive communion with gum in one’s with
mouth? Most people will likely say no. Yet, what does one
do with the chewing gum? This question affects more peo-
ple than those who go to communion. There are many gum
chewers at St. Paul of the Cross. Evidence abounds as to
where used chewing gum is deposited — on the pew seat,
under the pew, in the missal/hymnal shelf behind each pew
(a favorite place), on the floor, on the carpets, on the
church porch, on the church steps. Chewing gum does not
break the Eucharistic fast, but it often does create problems
for the worshiping assembly. Best to leave it at home.
My dear Parishioners, Thank you for last Sunday’s grand celebration of my birth-
day and ordination anniversary! I remain overwhelmed by
the outpouring of your exuberant affection. From the cele-
bration of the Mass to the reception that followed, it was
exquisite and delightful. I am most grateful for the letters
which were read from Archbishop Gregory and Fr. Robert
Joerger, my Provincial Superior. I have sent my thanks to
both of them for their kind words. I am grateful for the state-
ments made by groups and individuals, and for the whole
celebration which in itself was a beautiful statement of your
devotion. I appreciate the time and efforts of those who
worked behind the scenes to provide such a lovely experi-
ence for us all. While I hesitate to mention any one individu-
al or group, I know you will allow me to express my love
and appreciation for our young people who outdid them-
selves during the Eucharistic celebration and reception.
Their wonderful gifts enhanced both. I know I will never
forget that celebration and will continue to do my best to be
worthy of your support and dedication.
Gratefully in Christ,
Fr. Jerome, C.P.
