I lay down my life for My sheep Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, today, the faithful of the Holy Catholic Church are united as one throughout

the world to pray for religious vocations. Being of one mind as Jesus and the Father are of one mind, the faithful

are calling upon the grace of Our Lord Jesus shine on His Church by blessing it with an abundance of religious

vocations.

Today's reading from the tenth chapter of the Gospel of John reminded us through the spoken Words of Jesus that

He is the Good Shepherd. What is the difference between the Good Shepherd and the hired hand? When the hired

hand sees the wolf approaching, he abandons the sheep. After all, why should he risk his life for what is not his?

But, the Good Shepherd, He lays down His life to save His sheep from the approaching wolf. So loving and caring

is the Good Shepherd that when He sees one of His sheep is missing, He will leave the ninety-nine who are safe to

go and find His missing sheep.

Similar to this, those who answer their religious calling have a duty to safeguard the faith of the children of God,

the believers of the Church. When they see a lost child, who has been misled away from the Body of Christ, they

have an obligation to reach out to this child so he or she may be reconciled with God, with the Church and with the

faithful. This will ensure that every child shall bear spiritual fruits. This will ensure that when the Heavenly Father

prunes the Tree of Life, He will not remove this child as a dead branch that should be burned.

When Jesus spoke of His other sheep, He was referring to the Gentiles who at the time were not inheritors of the

Old Testament promises of God for His chosen people. He was referring to all the people throughout the world, no

matter their language, their nationality, their race or their culture. All are called to be of one flock, to have one

Shepherd. Through faith in Jesus and the Sacrament of Baptism, all are born again of the godly seed to belong to

the One Body of Christ. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, all are equal as children of God.

Doy mi vida por mis ovejas Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, hoy, los miembros de la Iglesia Católica estamos unidos en todo el

mundo para orar por las vocaciones religiosas. Teniendo una mente como Jesús y el Padre son de una sola mente,

los fieles estamos pidiendo a la gracia de Nuestro Señor Jesús brillar en su Iglesia bendiciéndola con una

abundancia de vocaciones religiosas.

La lectura de hoy del décimo capítulo del Evangelio de Juan nos recordó a través de las Palabras de Jesús que Él es

el Buen Pastor. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre el Buen Pastor y la mano contratada? Cuando la mano contratada ve

que el lobo se acerca, él abandona las ovejas. Después de todo, ¿por qué debería arriesgar su vida por lo que no es

suyo? Pero, el Buen Pastor, Él entrega su vida para salvar a sus ovejas del lobo que se aproxima. Entonces,

amoroso y cuidadoso es el Buen Pastor que cuando ve que falta una de sus ovejas, dejará a las noventa y nueve que

están seguras y encontrar a su oveja perdida.

Similar a esto, aquellos que responden a su vocación religiosa tienen el deber de salvaguardar la fe de los hijos de

Dios, los creyentes de la Iglesia. Cuando ven a un hijo perdido, que ha sido alejado del Cuerpo de Cristo, tienen la

obligación de acercarse a este hijo para que pueda reconciliarse con Dios, con la Iglesia y con los fieles. Esto

asegurará que cada hijo lleve frutos espirituales. Esto asegurará que cuando el Padre Celestial pode el Árbol de la

Vida, no elimine a este hijo como una rama muerta que debe ser quemada.

Cuando Jesús habló de sus otras ovejas, se estaba refiriendo a los gentiles que en ese momento no eran herederos

de las promesas del Antiguo Testamento de Dios para su pueblo elegido. Se estaba refiriendo a todas las personas

de todo el mundo, sin importar su idioma, su nacionalidad, su raza o su cultura. Todos están llamados a ser de un

solo rebaño, a tener un Pastor. Mediante la fe en Jesús y el Sacramento del Bautismo, todos nacen de nuevo de la

simiente divina para pertenecer al Cuerpo Único de Cristo. A través del Sacramento del Bautismo, todos son

iguales como hijos de Dios.

Dear Father Cely,

I was recently given report on the results of the 2017

Bishop’s Annual Appeal, and I am overjoyed to see

that more than $4.6 million has been pledged. This is

a record for our Diocese and means that we are able

to provide ongoing critical support to vital ministries,

especially to those that serve our brothers and sisters

in profound need.

These numbers also reflect the stewardship of so

many people in your parish. The generous response to

out 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal by the parishioners

of St. Anthony of Padua Parish is a true blessing and

change lives. Many come to our Church in need of

critical services and leave with much more. They take

with them the love and compassion of the

parishioners of the Paterson Diocese. I thank all those

who made this possible by participating in the 2017

Appeal and I thank you for your pastoral leadership

and support.

Please share this letter of gratitude with your

parishioners by including it in your bulletin. I want

them to know how much I appreciate their

participation in our Annual Appeal.
