It is very important to communicate with your child’s teachers. Teachers are the people we parents entrust with the most precious people in our lives -- the people who inspire the strongest emotions (and fears) within us. Just on that basis alone, it makes sense to connect with them. Both teachers and parents are working toward the same end: forming and facilitating the development of your child. Tell the teacher what you know about your child’s interests, skills and history that will help to build a complete picture of who your child is at this moment. Share any information that can affect your child emotionally, mentally or physically. Remember, communicating isn’t only about telling teachers. It’s also about asking and listening. Let the teacher tell you about what he or she knows of your child and how the child is in the classroom. You may get some ideas on how to encourage and extend that learning environment at home as well.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
Thank you to our Parent Association which has
generously allocated $14,000 to a variety of school
programs including music, sports science,
publications, and other areas. They are also
graciously sponsoring a Teacher Appreciation
Breakfast on Friday.
After 15 years of advocating for a safer environment
in front of the school, the Department of
Transportation has finally granted our request for a
stop sign and crosswalk across 110th street directly
in front of the school. This stop sign will greatly
improve the safety of students and staff alike when
entering and exiting the school property. Please be
mindful of this new traffic regulation when driving on
110th Street!
Student Government under the direction of Ms.
Kelly is already mapping out their activities for next
year and the year beyond. There will be a new club
wall where students can post their proposals for
clubs they would like start or continue. We will be
looking for advisors for these clubs. Clubs can meet
before or after school and will be compensated a
per session rate. Apply for the postings. We would
like to start clubs in the second week of school to
start building school spirit right away
We are expecting the delivery of approximately 204
new laptop computers during the week of May 14th.
This will allow us create 6 additional laptop carts,
and greatly increase our students access to
technology in the classroom. Funding for these carts
came from the offices of Councilwoman Karen
Koslowitz and Borough President Melinda Katz.

Refugee Youth Summer Academy 2018
Each summer, the International Rescue Committee provides a program for newly arrived refugee, asylee and other immigrant youth ages 5-21 to prepare them to succeed in New York City schools through a supportive and creative learning community. This year, the IRC aims to serve 120 of elementary, middle and high school levels. The students will represent at least 15 nations, and speak 20 languages. Many students will have arrived in the U.S. within the past few months, including children from Afghanistan, Guatemala & Cote d’Ivoire. At RYSA, core academic subject area classes emphasize essential learning skills and English language development. Creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes promote social and emotional well-being, while also infusing opportunities for additional English language learning. Each Friday, students participate in field trips to introduce them to the educational and cultural life of New York. For more information, please see a video about RYSA 2015

Dear parents, guardians, and alums:
Forest Hills High School has an exciting opportunity to teach computer science to our students. Technology is transforming
the world around us and having a computer science education is key to our students being ready for the future job market.
Did you know computer science majors can earn 40% more than the college average? Or that there are currently over
500,000 open computer science positions without qualified talent to fill them? Forest Hills High School is part of the
almost 60% of U.S. high schools who don’t currently offer computer science to most of their students. We’re trying to
change that by partnering with TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools).
Action We’re Taking
TEALS is a program supported by Microsoft Philanthropies that recruits, mentors, and places passionate technology
professionals into high school classrooms as volunteer instructors. These volunteers bring subject matter expertise and
will join Ms. Amanda Lee in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines
based on successful college courses.
Next year we will be offering “Introduction to Computer Science” thru TEALS. The introductory class is based on the award
-winning UC Berkeley CS10 course and is adapted specifically for high schools.
As a TEALS partner school, Forest Hills High School needs to assist with volunteer recruitment from the computer
science and software engineering fields to team-teach these courses with our teachers. Forest Hills High School will hold
the courses first period to permit the volunteers to attend their regular jobs.
Please help --if you or someone you know works in the computer science or software engineering field and would be
interested in making a difference in our students’ future success, please contact me at 718 268-3137 extension 2410 or
email: [email protected].
You can read more about TEALS on their website at http://www.tealsk12.org.
I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to hearing from many of you.
Sincerely,
Roz Fitzgerald

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
