Dear Parents/Caregivers Welcome back to Term 3. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. The class has settled back into routines very quickly. We have a Pre-service teacher with us, Angeline Anderson for the first three weeks of the term. Angeline has been in Room 11 on 5 days last term, leading up to this placement. The first week was filled with lots of different activities to keep their minds challenged. English and Maths goals will be sent home at the end of week 2. English Reading We will continue to work on each student’s fluency this term. This is important to keep the listener engaged and promotes enjoyment. We will also look more closely at comprehension, so that the students have a clear understanding of what they read. I would encourage you to practise sight words with your child each night, if your child still has them. I would also like to remind parents to complete the Home Reading Journal after they have listened to them read. Remember that reading to your child and singing to them further helps your child’s reading progress. Spelling We will continue using our contracts. Each term I have different tasks for the students to do, to assist them in learning their words. It is wonderful to hear the students’ enthusiasm when I let them know it is time for Word Knowledge. Many of the students now know how to write the Oxford sight words, which are the most commonly used words for students of this age. Why not ask them how they went with their test as these can happen any day of the week! Writing During terms 1 and 2 the students had lots of opportunities to write persuasive texts and narratives. The emphasis this term will be encouraging the use of greater detail to describe actions, thoughts and feelings. It has also been great to notice students are beginning to write in paragraphs. We still need to further develop the students’ proof reading skills so they can self edit before showing their work. Grammar We have been looking at conjunctions, which make sentences more complex and interesting. We will also be working on adverbs, so that the students’ writing shows greater depth. Mathematics We will be continuing to work on Number and Place Value. The students were totally engrossed in the game Last Person Standing which encourages them to have a deeper understanding of Place Value. History

Our Current Affairs Thinking Book will enable students to share information about topics in the news. Geography Our key inquiry questions this term will be What is a place? and How are people connected to their place and other places?

Students will be introduced to the concept of scale - from small rural towns to larger cities. We will also look at the connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples maintain with Country and Place. Students will begin to develop a mental map of the world and how they relate to where they live. Auslan During Term 3 the students will be reviewing colour, number, size, shape and time as well as expanding their Auslan vocabulary through signing games, songs, video, the use of IT equipment. We will cover these through a “Transport/Travel” theme. Christine Krohn - Specialist Auslan Teacher

Art The students will be exploring ideas, experiences, observations and use their imaginations to create visual art works and designs. These pieces of artwork will reflect our mathematical themes and geography. The students will also have opportunities to view Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders artwork and use it as inspiration for their own representations.

Music and Drama Program This term in music students will read, write and compose rhythms using ta, titi, za, ta-a and ta-a-a-a. They will use xylophones to learn melodies, play as a group and explore higher and lower pitch. Students will learn about ostinato patterns and apply these to their music making. Later in the term, students will begin look at the Music Count Us In song in preparation for Term 4. In drama, students will focus on situation and setting. They will practise responding to others in role and continue to develop their expression. Students will participate in process drama activities where they will complete tasks as ‘Superhelpers.’ Georgia Yates - Music and Drama Specialist

Absences If your child is absent, please inform the school by phone, as a text message will be sent on the day if you have not notified the school by 10:00am. You may also write the reason for their absence in their Diary. Looking forward to another term of great learning !

investigating fractions: halves, quarters and eighths. Continuing on from last term the students will be actively involved in different tasks, which will further develop their understanding of measurement in the following areas: volume and capacity. Health and Physical Education After an extremely successful first semester, we are excited to introduce new topics that will allow students to develop new skills. In term 3 students will learn about fitness and the components required to keep fit. Students will also learn about the importance of hygiene. The term 3 Physical Education component involves the following: Fitness components - Students will participate in a number of different fitness tests. This will give students the opportunity to improve their own fitness which will help them now and in future years. Sports Day Practise – Students will practise all of the sports day events in which they will be competing to ensure that they are prepared for the day in term 4. Matt Cuconits PE Specialist

Science During Term 3 we will complete our unit of work on Chemical Sciences - mixtures. The students will be able to see that different materials can be combined for a particular purpose. They will have opportunities to describe examples of where science is used in their daily lives. They will also be encouraged to pose questions about their experiences and predict outcomes of investigations. Technologies During Technology sessions students will think creatively and problem solve by working in pairs to investigate and create their own stop motion animation based on a sequence from a fairy tale.

Show and Tell topics for Term 3

Week 2 Bring along something that keeps you warm in Winter. Week 3 What is your favourite Winter food? Week 4 What is your favourite game to play in Winter ? Week 5 What is your favourite type of soup? Week 6 Bring along a mystery item in a bag or box to do with Winter. Write down 3 clues. Week 7 What is your favourite T.V. show? Week 8 Who is your favourite author? Week 9 What do you like to do in the Spring time? Week 10 What would you like to do in the holidays?

Show and Tell I have included the weekly topics for Show and Tell. I would actively encourage all students to prepare what they are going to present the night before. This will enable each student to develop confidence when speaking in front of the class. It is so important to speak confidently in front of other people.
