ON THE ROLE OF BORSTAL INSTITUTION IN JUVENILE JUSTICE IN CHILDCARE AND PROTECTION IN KENYA.

Aspect of low cost rehabilitation model‐case of Borstal institutions in kenya. All Borstal institutions are Government funded from committal training and reintegration of juvenile offenders and to some empowerment upon realease

We at the B.i s employ the Two commonly used models in rehabilitation are –welfare model‐based on the  Rehabilitation needs of the juvenile offenders

‐Justice model‐that ensures the emphasis of the due process and accountability of offender and the care giver.

Childcare providers should therefore give and collaborate with actors in the rehabilitation of juveniles

Early intervention strategies to juvenile offenders and special needs children or children with behaviour disorders is key and should be addressed an assessment expert before it goes out of hand

The aspect of juvenile institutionalization should be the last resort,

4. TRAINING PROGRAMS AT THE INSTITUTIONSa)Reception Board Done to all newly admitted boys and girls immediately they are admitted‐‐‐transition from POLICE CELLS ,COURTS TO THE INSTITUTIONS

Its major role is to assist the boys adjust to the new environment, ensure the immediate issues of the boys are effectively and timely dealt with before being placed 

The intervention strategy as the field probation officers had proposed. In addition we commence the reconciliation process in order to enhance reintegration process and ensure proper resettlement.

b) Induction/Literacy classes.

Newly admitted boys who are unable to read and write were placed on Literacy classes immediately before being allocated sections; this is to enable the boys to easily/promptly adjust to training and acquire the necessary skills. proficiency and literacy classes is also offered to the illiterate boys.

c) Guidance and Counseling SessionsThe counseling sessions entail individual and group counseling that address the underlying Juvenile underlying issues; focused to improve self image/esteem, anger management, conflict resolution, drugs and substance abuse, social life skills, adolescent sexual mismanagement among other issues. All boys and girls in Borstals undergo group and individualized counseling sessions from caregivers.

EMPLOYMENT BASED INTERVENTIONSThe courses offered are aimed at equipping the boys and girls with skills and providing them with knowledge to change their attitude and focus more on changing their future.‐ELECTRICAL INSTALATION‐PLUMBERMETAL WORK

We need modern market oriented courses to borstal institutions; can you imagine a 15 year old training as a carpenter? Most of them never continue with some training upon release.
