Objectives
Complete an engineering notebook or packet documenting the design processes Understand basic concepts of flight Design an efficient flying vehicle
Problem Statement
Make a paper air plane that flies/glides for a long distance.
Constraints
Work individually All work must be done in class using class materials Limited to only listed supplies for each model Can include control surfaces like ailerons and rudders Design must include three or more individual parts (fuselage, wings, tails, etc.) None of the following are allowed:
o Folds except for control surfaceso Dartso Flying discs
Pre-prototyping out of regular paper is allowed
Project Requirements
Must submit the following stages
o Two prototypeso One final working model
Four original ideas based on research Redesign sketches before each new prototype and stage with written justification
Instructor Supplied Tools, Materials & Equipment
1 piece of paper heavy weight paper, like card stock
o Final model built with special color paper
1’ of masking tape Small amounts of white glue* The above list is required per plane Video related to flight, TBA
Students Supplied Materials
None
Timeline, Approximate
Day 1 – Project Intro / Research- Introduction DVD on topic*** TBA Day 2 – Research / Drawings Day 3 – Resource sharing / Prototyping Day 4 – Testing of final design Day 5 – Paperwork grading and submission
Needs of the Problem
Diagram and define the main parts of a plane Explain the principals of flight Share your top resource with the class Engineering notebook documenting the Engineering Design Process Good construction For successful flight the entire plane should fly and touch down over ten feet away. Great
planes will fly fifteen feet or more.o You will have three official attemptso Entire body and plane must be behind launch lineo No running
Extra: If time allows sketch a plane or paper plane on plain white printer paper and your drawing could be used on this design brief. Sign it and attach it to the end of your engineering notebook.
