Hello PAPA Friends

I hope you enjoy the new look of the PAPA eViews With its magazine appearance realistic page turns and searchable articles with keywords we hope that you will look forward to the Internet version of our associationrsquos newsletter

Articles and advertising included in PAPA eViews are chosen for the Internet version for very specific reasons

We often get articles and news with important links to Internet sites The eViews allows the readers to go directly to the sites without having to retype the link addresses which can be long and cumbersome

PAPA eViews is intended to be a nimble resource to disperse time sensitive information for our membership And when necessary it can be created and sent out in a flash A perfect example is the upcoming print exhibition amp sale with entries needed by Oct 16 and the sale taking place Oct 29

PAPA eViews however is not intended to take the place of the PRINTED PAPA Views As much as Aerial Photography is a visual medium the Board of Directors and this editor feel that the printed page is important in keeping our members connected And for many the printed PAPA Views that arrives in their mailbox is the only tangible connection they have to PAPA Plus that beautiful front cover almost exclusively reserved for our cover competition winners or the highest scoring prints from the PAPA Print competition What an honor that I do not want to see go away

I hope you enjoy this new format for PAPA eViews Let me hear from you And as always we welcome your articles and ideas

Happy Flying

PAPA PRINT EXHIBITION AND SALE PAPA member Herb Lingl in cooperation with participating with PAPA and individual PAPA members is planning an exciting one day exhibit and sale of PAPA member prints on Saturday Oct 29 in Petaluma California The original idea came from the collection of the prints used in the PAPA Print competitions and donated to PAPA for future airport exhibits Herbrsquos idea takes it a step further having an exhibit where the prints are offered for sale

The exhibit and event will have the prints displayed in an outdoor covered area at the beautiful Petaluma Airport Weather at this time of year in Petaluma is usually reliably pleasant With the use of PAPArsquos Print Exhibition display panels at least 50-100 16 x 20rdquo or 16rdquo x 24rdquo prints could be displayed

Refreshments and entertainment will be supplied by Herbrsquos firm Airport Muse (dedicated to bringing fine art to airport venues) Additionally Herb and Airport Muse would finance all of the expenses to market the event including postcard event collateral electronic marketing etc

PAPA collected nearly 30 donated prints from the last competition and PAPA members who would like to participate with new or additional prints are invited to send their prints to Herb Shipping information is available here

Prints would be sold at a set price to be determined A two tier pricing structure will include a higher price for extraordinary prints and standard price for other works Herb Lingl will determine if a print should be considered for premium pricing

A split on the gross sales (before sales taxmdashwhich would be collected by Aerial Archives) would be as follows The maker of the print will receive 50 percent the Western Horizon Flying Museum (dedicated to keeping historical aircraft flying) would receive 35 and 15 would go to sales commission

Any work not sold during this event would be donated by Airport Muse to a childrenrsquos educational institution to plant the seeds for future aerial photographers Alternatively contributors wishing to have their unsold prints returned will need to supply shipping boxes and prepaid FedEx shipping labels

If you would like to participate in the exhibition and sale and or submit NEW work for the exhibition and sale please review the PAPA Exhibition Guidelines and the entry form on the

PAPA Exhibition Guidelines

PAPA members are invited to participate in the exhibit program which is currently managed by Airport Muse director Herb Lingl Airport Muse is dedicated to bringing fine arts to airport venues

This document which will be updated from time to time outlines the general operating procedures in effect for the exhibit program so that PAPA members have a better understanding of what may happen to their work if they choose to partici-pate in the program

Existing exhibits and existing donated work Of the past several years PAPA members have been invited to donate work submitted to the print competitions at the PAPA conferences for possible inclusion in exhibits at various FAA facili-ties A number of exhibits have taken place including exhibits at Potomac TRACON the Miami and Nashville control towers and the Transport Canada control tower in Montreal Exhibits are still hanging at the control towers in Miami and Nashville Prints exhibited at these locations were selected from the work donated to PAPA by PAPA members at the print competitions described above

Over the years the volume of print donations to the program has grown to the point where the program is becoming un-sustainable unless it is modified or a system for storing the ever growing volume of prints is developed As a result the process by which prints become part of an exhibition is being modified and prints which donrsquot become part of an exhibit may be either returned to the maker for a handling and shipping fee or donated to an educational institution

Existing prints that were donated to the program and that have been shipped to Herb Lingl will be displayed at an exhibit entitled Visions From Above at the Petaluma Municipal Airport (O69) on October 29 2011 from 11am-4pm All prints displayed at this exhibit will be available for sale at a price determined by Herb Lingl in consultation with PAPA officers Julie Belanger and John Mooney The exhibit will be marketed and managed by Airport Muse which will staff sales col-lect revenue and pay applicable sales tax on sales Gross revenue before sales of print sales will be divided as follows 50 of the gross revenue will be paid to the maker of the print within 30 days of sale 35 of the gross revenue will be donated to the Western Horizon Flying Museum dedicated to keeping historical aircraft flying and 15 will be retained by Airport Muse to partially cover event marketing and production expenses Any member who has donated work to the PAPA exhibition program may opt out of the sale by notifying Herb Lingl in writing at herb (at) airportmuse (dot) com no later than October 16 2011

PAPA members are encouraged to attend the free event which is located right on the field at the Petaluma Municipal Airport The Petaluma Airport has been described by AOPArsquos Phil Boyer as one of the finest examples of a general aviation airport because of the diverse mix of pilots aircraft owners and builders and businesses located on the field the stunning location in the heart of northern Californiarsquos wine country and its proximity to San Francisco

Personnel from the Bay Area FAA towers will be invited to the event both because we know theyrsquoll have fun and also because they may if they choose select work on display at this event for exhibits at their own locations from the work on display Bay Area FAA towers include San Francisco San Jose Oakland Palo Alto San Carlos Reid Hillview Liver-more and Concord

Future Airport Exhibits The airport exhibit program will be modified slightly going forward Instead of storing a pool of exhibit prints from which exhibit program participants may select prints Herb Lingl will work with future venues to de-velop an interest in advance in specific exhibition themes and then invite members to submit work in response to such themes Work will be submitted in a digital format initially for review by Herb and the exhibiting venue If a piece is se-lected the maker will be notified and invited to create an exhibition print for inclusion in the exhibit

In addition Herb will invite interested airport venues in proximity to the PAPA annual conferences to view prints on dis-play at the print competition that have been donated to the exhibition program The airport venues may select prints they wish to exhibit at that time and arrangements will be made for representatives of the venue to pick up such se-lected prints at the conclusion of the conference Prints donated to the exhibition program that are not selected for ex-hibit and prints that are returned after an airport exhibit will be donated to an educational institution selected by Herb Lingl Herb intends to select educational institutions serving children in order to plant the seeds for the next generation of aerial photographers pilots and aviation enthusiasts

Additional information about the PAPA exhibit program is available from Herb at

PAPA MEMBER INVENTS AFFORDABLE STRUT MOUNT

THAT MAKES AERIAL VIDEO EASY

Aerial photography as a career and business draws the creative individual from the population To do what we do you have to like to fly shoot and occasionally solve problems Many of our friends and colleagues in the PAPA organization see a need and fill it Their inventiveness has led to technological advances that the rest of us can benefit from

Here was the real life situation How do you securely mount a small video camera to your aircraft

Bill Hemmel PAPA member and owner of Lakes Region Aerial Photo of New Hampshire saw the problem and came up with an affordable solution Bill invented and manufactures AeroVideo a unique aerial video camera mount that securely attaches to the struts of all Cessnas RANS and AirCams

Priced at $99 the StrutCam mounting system is designed to hold the smaller lighter ldquohelmet-camrdquo type cameras such as the GoProHero or Drift 170 This mount is not recommended for your larger DSLR camera

GREETINGS FROM AFGHANISTAN SPRING 2011 By Chuck Boyle

Accommodations in Afghanistan

Chuck Boyle PAPA member and owner of Boyle Consulting Engineers of Charlotte North Carolina spent several months in Afghanistan working with United States Government He returned home in June The following is an email he sent describing his time there

Spring has arrived in the high country of Afghanistan (Kabul at least) and the camp is now a little less dreary than when I arrived back up here from Kandahar in February I am here at the airport not far from the NATO headquarters which I visit at least weekly There I am able to shed my flak vest walk around see different faces get a taste of European foods and try my French on the Belgian Army security guards Ha ha I have run into a couple other West Point grads and have a few classmates here still in uniform or are with other federal agencies Not doing much flying but getting more involved in operations and able to use my civilian skillsin addition to some old Army skill sets that I have dredged from the dungeons of my memory

The accommodations here are actually very good we have private rooms with showers and the mess hall is right next door to my buildingmy office is another 100 yards past thatand the gym is 50 yards away Bible study is at 1900 hrs on Sundays So my life has become a routine of walking from one point to the other 24-7 I have joked that it is a lot like prison except the guards are pointing weapons the other way LOL I often wonder what the country looks like from the ground beyond the vantage of what I see from this valley or from the air The cleaning lady a local national is teaching me Dari (Persian Farsi) it is a nice change from the routine of eve-ryday

Anyway all is well and I am keeping my sanity with some like minds here in camp Most of all I

am able to Skype Suzanne and the kids (or gmail chat) everyday which keeps me tuned to the

home front I am amazed at the dedication and sacrifice that so many of my associates

have given for so many years here and in other faraway places

PAGE 8 PAPA EV IEWS

As some of you know I was in Afghanistan earlier this year working for the US government During this time I was able to photo-capture some of the rugged beauty of the country by air I also experienced first hand the sacrifices that our men and women (in and out of uniform) continue to make every single day in a very inhospitable place while we live our lives in relative comfort back home

I have created a fundraiser on Shutterfly using aerial photography I took while in Afghanistan By purchasing the photos amp gifts you will be helping North Carolina families deployed - All proceeds will go to

wwwncheroesorg or the organization of your choice

Please consider making a purchase

Herb Lingl 4157712555 herbaerialarchivescom
