Treaty Negotiations Update The rubber is starting to hit the road now with negotiations. TRONPKH has entered the treaty settlement process through the direct negotiations settlement pathway. We are currently in the process of drafting the Deed of settlement. At the appropriate time we will contact our beneficiaries and seek ratification for the Deed of settlement and the Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE). The Chief Negotiators Report is available as a document on our website and we have a limited amount of printed copies to post out. If you are not internet able and interested in receiving a copy please contact Carol Ph: 07 888 7509 or Txt: 021 0300 618. ~ Bevan Hunter

    Foreshore & Seabed Update

This is a work in progress and our History as an agreed point of reference is close to completion. Once completed it goes out to consultation with third parties. An Assessor is appointed to report to the Minister, in our instance Justice Judith Potter. The Assessor provides a report to the Ministers validating our rights or not. ~ John Tamihere

Ahi Ka Elections Serving on the Runanga Executive is a challenging and rewarding role. Over the next few months we will start the election of the Ahi seats process. By August our six Ahi Ka appointments from Harataunga and Mataora will be in place along with the two general seats and the Kaumatua seat which will complete the Runanga Executive to a team of nine members. Below is an approximate schedule for the Elections, our next newsletter will have the details on what you can do to elect your Ahi Ka representative. If you would like to participate in the nomination and voting process please ensure you are registered with Ngati Porou ki Hauraki early, as the register will be closed for two weeks during July, so we can concentrate on the election process.

    • June - Call for nominations.

    • July - Election process and announcement of successful candidates.

    • August - New trustees begin their term.

It is with great sorrow we announce our Kaumatua Ernest (Dick) Hauraki passed away on the 7th February aged 79.

He was one of the original trustees for the Ngati Porou ki Hauraki Trust and later on Te Runanga o Ngati Porou ki Hauraki.

He and his knowledge will certainly be greatly missed by his peers.

Haere atu ra e te matua ki te taha o tou tupuna.

Harataunga Marae News The new Maihi [entrance bargeboards] carved by Fred Harrison have now been completed. They replace those which have weathered and rotted since our wharenui was first opened. Following tikanga, these will be installed onto Rakairoa. Discarded Maihi will be buried in a swamp, also with the appropriate tikanga observance. We believe this will be the first time whakairo of Ngati Porou origin have been buried in Harataunga. ~ Cam Hunter
