I f you only have time to visit one of the four houses on the Charming Cottages of Palo Alto tour this month, don’t miss

the home of Debbie Miller and Carol Nast. What started as a 1928 Mediterranean

home with rich cocobolo wide-plank floor-ing, outward-opening casement windows and dark-beamed ceilings, has been enhanced through a several-year remodeling project into a stunning home.

“We tried to keep the classic character of the house,” Miller said, pointing to the rough-hewn front door and newly refinished floors. “I thought the house was beautiful, but nothing was done.”

Miller has lived there since 1989, but she and Nast didn’t start the renovation until 2008. Three different designs were drawn up before they settled on architect Robert Goldspink of Aptos and contractor Harrell Remodeling of Mountain View.

Much of the front remains the same, em-bellished by ironwork designed by Jolee Horne, a landscape designer in Mountain View. Horne designed (and HandCrafted Metals of Redwood City made) everything from the wisteria-adorned arched trellis in the front yard to the living-room fireplace screen, lamps, gate, the courtyard hearth and embellishment around a fountain.

Working with interior designer Olivia Bos-ton, of Olivia’s Order, San Francisco, Miller and Nast created a home that’s thematically unified by color and style throughout.

“They wanted a Tuscan, Old World look,” Boston said. That look is seen in the scrolled pattern in one wallpapered wall behind the bed in a downstairs bedroom, coordinated with matching fabric in the bed skirt. The twists and leaves reappear in much of the ironwork, or bathroom faucets, or shower tiles.

and grains). The ceiling is faced in brick.Highlight of the kitchen is a gray marble

backsplash with an inlaid leafy design in green.

The former garage and an adjoining stu-dio apartment are now a reconfigured mas-ter suite, which includes a roomy bedroom, a walk-in closet and large bathroom with a huge free-standing tub and two vanities. And from the glass-walled shower, one can step out to the private patio (where the hot tub is), then out the gate to a second kitchen. That kitchen is designed for outdoor entertaining, with a long granite counter, Viking range and barbecue. Refreshments will be served there on tour days.

Because the lot is 200 feet deep, there was no problem constructing a new two-car garage at the rear.

French doors from the living room, dining room, breakfast area and master bedroom lead to a courtyard with a central fireplace, a sec-ond space for indoor-outdoor entertaining and just enjoying the outdoor view.

While keeping that Old-World charm, the owners wanted all the modern conveniences, including electricity to their new living-room chandelier (which was found in a hotel ball-room in Chicago). Amina stereo speakers are located behind the Sheetrock throughout the house, with sound coming from within the walls.

But some things didn’t warrant changing at all: When paint was stripped off the original casement windows, they discovered bronze

hardware. This year’s Charming Cottages of Palo Alto

home tour is the 21st annual event sponsored by the Palo Alto Area Mills College Club. Proceeds from the tour benefit Mills College students from San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

Among the other three homes, you’ll find:

-cisco cobblestones

details, whether they’re original glass, bricks in the furnace flue, floors or lighting fixtures

-prove energy conservation or use green-build-ing techniques while updating homes.

Clearly, there’s much to see on the tour,

but if you want to limit your view to this one house, you’ll still have to buy your ticket first. One hint to location: It’s in Crescent Park.

Jolee Horne designed the wrought-iron trellis, as well as many other metal elements, for this Crescent Park home that will be featured on the upcoming Charming Cottages tour.

Besides the two vanities, a huge bathtub, custom-made table and heated floors, the bathroom includes a second glass door where one can step out of the shower and onto the private patio with spa.

T he view from your windows has a strong effect on a room’s appeal and how you feel in

the space. By concealing an ugly view or enhancing an appealing one you can create internal peace and extend your interior decor to include the out-of-doors.

See how your views affect you. Walk through your home and look out each window. Note which views are already peaceful and calming, which could use further enhancement, and which should be shielded.

Create a vignette. If you have a window that faces a blank wall or fence, you don’t need to keep the blinds drawn. Treat the space like a blank canvas and create a

vignette:

a trellis and plant a vine in front of it. Hang a few small bird-houses from the vine.

cheerful color, or create a trompe l’oeil painting.

chimes or bird feeders from the eaves.

fence and treat it like a mantel-piece: Hang a piece of art or mirror over it (mosaics and oil paintings can last for many years out-of-

doors), place several potted plants to either side, and a stone sculpture piece to the other.

anything, use the wall space above to display a collection of straw hats, birdhouses, old rusted tools or drift wood.

Block the view. If the view is so ugly that you can’t bear it, divert the eye or block the view:

across the window and display a collection of colored glass, or ar-range a few pots of ivy on it.

shutters or mini-blinds and keep them partially closed.

outside in front of the window.

the top of the window frame and dangle crystals, sea shells, leaves or little kid’s toys from ribbons or string.

of the window.Enhance the view. If the view

from your window is already pleas-ing, make it even better. Let the window become a picture frame and use the view beyond to create a three-dimensional, multi-sensory “painting”:

birdbath, archway, sculpture piece or topiary as a focal point and ar-range plants of varying heights around it.

inside the room, or vice versa.

low dish with water and add a few stones, place an Oriental fish bowl with water plants in it by a group-ing of pots, or get cuttings started

in a large, clear glass bottle.

where you like to hang out.

fountain, wind chimes or bird feed-ers for song birds near where you can enjoy them.

vignettes. Hang wooden clogs from

mat and hang the frame around a flower pot, old silverware or min-

dishware and sculpture pieces that no longer work inside your house can find a new home out in your yard.

One of America’s finest trophy trout ranches, the

1,346+/- acre Spring Creek Ranch is one of

the best fly-fishing ranches with private fishing

water on the headwaters of the most prolific spring

creek wild rainbow trout fishery in the Country.

With the average catch in the 3-6 pound range, the

ranch also fronts a second spring creek, Lava Creek,

as well frontage on the world renowned Fall River.

The ranch is home to abundant migratory waterfowl

including ducks, geese, pelicans, egrets, herons

and swans. Other bird species include Osprey, Bald

Eagle, Great Horned Owl, Peregrine Falcons, quail,

dove, pheasant, turkey and grouse. Hunting has not

been allowed in years so the ranch has become a

true wildlife refuge in a beautiful mountain valley

with stunning views to Mt. Shasta to the north. A

jet-capable County Airport and the small ranching

community of Fall River Mills are just 10-15 min-

utes from the ranch. Price Reduced to $12 million.
