This month’s cover photo contest winner: Raequel Tomsich

november is normally associated with Thanksgiving and I would like to include a little something

on the subject. I try to be thankful every day (not just the month of November) for the things I already have, the abilities I have, the small things and the big things. Even when I almost locked my keys in the car but caught the door at the last second, I am very thankful. :)

Here is a something I found on the internet that may give you pause and remember to be thankful every day.

Each of us nurture secret dreams and aspirations. The “what if ”, the “when everything else settles down”, the “when the kids get older”, the “when I have the money”.

And these dreams are good. They give us hope, energy, a place to escape, the power to visualize something other than our current choices. Our secret dreams sustain us and enrich our lives. For a while.

Secret dreams and aspirations have a lifespan of their own. Over time, and without warning, the lack of action, the failure to take one step in their direction, the loss of faith to make them real, secret dreams and aspirations slip into missed opportunities, or even worse, embarrassment and regret.

A dream becomes regret is a heavy chain binding the spirit, always waiting at the edge of consciousness to wrap another length of chain around the heart.

Nothing in your life is beyond redemption. Not even regrets. And certainly not dreams.

Have you let them out lately? Written them down or told a friend or love? Giving voice to those dreams is a first step. Let them out, let them roam. The confidence to express your dreams is a step toward making them real. Scary? You bet. Worth it? Absolutely.

Need a way to recapture a dream, before regret? Be thankful for it.

Be thankful that you had the ability to imagine, to hope and to feel it in the first place. Reach back and find - it’s still in there - the joy it brought you. Dust it off, roll it around in your mind a while, let it out, and visualize what could be, if you only take the chance.

Remember next month is the coloring page contest!! Happy Thanksgiving!

Spa newsWhat can I do about my skin discoloration? This question comes up repeatedly during the course of my day.  The proper term is Hyperpigmentation, which is a common condition in which some areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding areas due to an excess of melanin. Hyperpigmentation is challenging to treat due to it’s complex and recurrent nature. It can however fade considerably over time with the use of skincare modalities that thin the skin and in so doing, reduce discoloration.

A series of chemical peeling and microdermabrasion individually or in combination therapy is generally my recommendation. In conjunction with professional treatment, the topical cream Hydroquinone can be applied to assist in the lightening and fading of these areas. The proper and safe use of Hydroquinone should be discussed with your esthetician. Please call me directly to schedule your appointment or discuss your concerns. Karate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main

objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of  building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club.  We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

It was a regular Thursday afternoon when Chuck felt his first symptoms — intense nausea, chest pain

and profuse cold sweats. Sensing it was a heart attack, he asked his son to call 9-1-1. Chuck was rushed straight

to the Florida Hospital Tampa ER.

Their expert medical team never once gave up on Chuck. Not after he flatlined. Not after they tried four times to

revive him. Not even after his heart stopped for a full five minutes. At the Florida Hospital Pepin Heart

Institute, located at Florida Hospital Tampa, an emergency heart catheterization saved Chuck’s life.

Because he was able to reach Florida Hospital Tampa in time, Chuck received the right critical care and cardiac therapy. To this day, he’s grateful beyond words. “Thank you is a very small thing to say to the people who saved my life.”

Conveniently located at the corner of Fletcher Ave. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

Tennis Tampa Palms Jr. Tennis AcademyQuICkSTArT TENNISThe uSTA has passed new rules governing competition for 10 and under tennis tournaments.  The

Continued from page 8new rules require that 10 and under tennis be played using slower moving and lower bouncing ball on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter rackets.

10 and under Tennis is designed around the same concepts as Little League Baseball and other Youth Sports such as soccer and basketball, all of which use equipment and court/field sizes scaled to the size of young children. This allows children to achieve success the first time out, and, sustain that success as they continue to develop their skills. Quickstart: This is a new format for 10 and under children just learning to play Tennis.  It is designed to bring kids into the game utilizing a shorter court , smaller rackets, and lighter balls. 2 Star: The player has received previous instruction and is familiar with the basic strokes such as forehand, backhand and volley. The player is in need of developing service, overhead and improving rallying skills. 3 Star: Player has received previous instruction and is familiar with all strokes. Player has begun to develop strokes to include spins and placement and can maintain a rally beyond 4 shots. This player has begun to formulate some basic playing strategies. Footwork and proper technique is emphasized in this class. Tournament Tough: This is an invitation only class designed for players dedicated to improving their tennis games in preparation for tournament and or league play.  Footwork, proper technique, drills, strategy and match play is heavily emphasized in this class. Advanced Academy: Oriented primarily toward competitive High School tennis players, this brand new (invitation only) class will emphasize the development of those skills necessary to compete at the High School level. Focusing on tennis-specific fitness/hitting drills, shot selection, and situational

match strategies will be the priorities in Tampa Palms most intense and highest level class.

Tampa Palms has a great reputation for having one of the finest after school tennis programs in the area. All of our Tennis Professionals are uSPTA certified and have a passion for what they do. They make learning the game of tennis a very positive experience by incorporating their knowledge in a fun and informative way. Your child will be grouped according to age and ability.

Besides being taught the fundamentals of the game of tennis, we will also emphasize tennis court courtesy and good sportsmanship. Tennis is a lifetime sport. Now is a great time to get your child in our tennis program to learn a “sport for a lifetime.”

The Ball is in your Court. v

low Volley.Keeping your upper arm close to your body is important for a low volley.  It keeps the shot compact and stable.  A good way to practice this is to put a tennis ball under your arm pit and hit a few low volleys.  If the ball comes out, your arm is moving too far away from your body.

This excercise also emphasizes another aspect of good volley

form.  It forces you to generate power by stepping diagonally forward instead of swinging.  Spend a few minutes fine tuning your volley form with this excercise and watch your volley consistency soar!!

Spend too much time with this excercise and watch your arm pit “sore”. See you on the courts!!

How would describe the market outlook for Tampa Palms Community?Inventory of homes for sale and for rent continues to shrink limiting opportunity for buyers and tenants. This in turn, is pushing up prices for now.

What is the “normal” real estate transaction in today’s local market? For our zip code 33647, 50% of sold homes this year were distressed sales (short sales and foreclosures) and

the other 50% were traditional sales (non-distressed). However in Tampa Palms, which is a sub market of this same zip code, 30% of sold homes this year have been distressed sales while 70% were traditional sales.

Are all real estate professionals qualified to handle short sale transactions? It requires a combination of experience and educational credentials to complete a successful short sale transaction. I hold a Short Sale and Foreclosure Resource Certification from the National Association of Realtors and have been a licensed Realtor for 16 years.

What is Alternative right Party Contact (ArPC) Program? It’s a joint effort in which the bank and a qualified

How is the rental market in Tampa Palms?Demand and pricing has risen since last year and I expect it to continue to rise as more households move into rental housing. Local Market Monitor has rated Tampa as one of the top 10 out of 316 markets nationwide for having the highest investment potential for single-family rental properties.

What advice do you have for Sellers in this market?Depending on their personal situation, some homeowners are in a better position to rent their homes instead of selling them. Considering all options and making an informed decision is key.

On October 7th, Kappa Delta Sorority at the University of South Florida held

a “Princess Pamper Party” for local Brownie troops with the theme being

“Every Girl is a Princess.” The girls decorated crowns with their names on them, got their nails painted, and each girl was given a mirror with “You Are A Princess” written on it to decorate as well. Each Girl Scout that attended was paired up with a Kappa Delta

“Sister” so that they were given as much attention as possible and were able to form a special friendship.

“Young girls often have a problem with self-esteem due to media influence and expected social norms,” said Michelle Bartholet, who Chaired the event. “Kappa Delta works closely with the Girl Scouts to help build character, form friendships, and most importantly build the confidence of these young girls. We reach out to all age groups of girls,

from Brownies to Ambassadors, because not only is it important to teach the young girls about confidence, but it is just as important to continue to remind them of its importance as they get older.”

In 1998, Kappa Delta began a national collaboration with Girl Scouts, an organization of over three million girls. With this partnership, Kappa Delta became the first and only National Panhellenic Conference group to adopt the Girl Scouts as a national philanthropy. Each year, Kappa Deltas devote over 175,000 hours to working with Girl Scouts in their communities.

Michelle went on to say, “I had hoped that the Princess theme would appeal to the younger girls but I never expected to get such a great response. During the event, I saw each girl shine; some of the shyest girls were among the loudest. By the end of the day, these girls became

our ‘honorary little sisters’. Even the girls said they didn’t want to leave their new Kappa Delta ‘Sisters.’ Overall the event was a success. We taught the girls that each and every one of them is a ‘Princess’ in their own way, while having fun and forming special bonds with the girls. We plan on continuing this success in all our events this year.”

“My Brownies felt so special,” said Troop Leader Susie Napier. “ It is so important for people to know there are great young people who are giving of their time and who really care!” v

On Saturday morning September 15th New Tampa Evening Rotary

Club members and other volunteers started to arrive at St. Mark the Evangelist Church to help with distributing food in partnership with Feeding America. Pallets of donated food included dry goods, meat and fresh vegetables. Tents were erected and boxes went through an assembly line. Each box was packed with a variety of products as it

progressed to the end of the line. Rotarian Pat Rogers, a director at Feeding America, was on hand to direct the operation and give instruction to the volunteers. The Rotary Club of New Tampa Evening not only provided volunteers, they donated $1500 to make this distribution possible. In addition to our Rotary club there were volunteers from other organizations. Shortly after the first boxes were filled cars started to line up to collect the food.

As the temperature rose, the pace of the cars increased as well. Volunteers frantically continued to pack the boxes to keep up with the demand. Tricia Till handled half gallons of juice while Peter Vaka and Ram Kancharla put produce, crackers and cookies into each box. Our exchange student Katharina Lorenz kept the line moving with empty boxes to be filled. Lloyd Johnson, Sharon Gates and Eileen Johnson never stopped. Past President Sherri Ferguson helped with the setup and breakdown as well as packing boxes into families cars.

Feeding America’s mission is “Ending Hunger Nourishing Hope”. Feeding America is the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the country, consisting of a network of more than 200 food banks. They have the ability to leverage food donor relationships and effectively transport food to feed hungry Americans.

Across the country one in six people struggles with hunger. Of the 50 million people who are unsure where

their next meal will come from, Feeding America Tampa Bay provides food to over 400,000 people in the West Central Florida.

Feeding America Tampa Bay makes a difference in the lives of thousands of people weekly through its distribution to a partnership network of more than 600 churches and other incorporated non-profit organizations. These hunger relief agencies include The Salvation Army, Metropolitan Ministries, Beth-el Mission, Hope Children’s Home and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. The Food Bank services 10 counties throughout west central Florida.

New Tampa Evening Rotary Club was thrilled to partner with Feeding America and was able to distribute to over 200 individuals and 50 families. The New Tampa Evening Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 6:15 pm at Hunters Green Country Club. We hope you will visit us for fun and fellowship and to find out how rewarding being a Rotarian can be. v

resIDeNt story

Some of you may remember a Resident Story we ran over a year ago about a mother,

Lucy Mercadante, whose son, David, passed away unexpectedly of melanoma at age 43. He was a successful businessman, devoted husband and loving father to three young children. Additionally, he was a prolific writer of crime and murder mystery fiction novels – four of them in fact! When he was diagnosed, he asked his mother, who had been a reading teacher for 21 years, to do some-thing with his books. After his death, Lucy and her husband Peter self-published his first book, “The Victim” which is a Mob crime story that takes place in Tampa. Next they published, “The Mistress of Decep-

tion”, about greed and a faked death, set in Long Island, NY. “We did this to honor our son’s memory – not to make money – which we don’t! We just enjoy seeing the number of sales and hearing how much people are enjoying the fruits of his labor,” says Lucy. A sample review of his first book on Amazon states, “…Anyone who has lived in or visited the Tampa area will recognize many of the locations described in the book. ‘The Victim’ was definitely a page turner and kept me guessing until the end.”  Praise for his second novel includes, “Wow, what a follow up to the first book. If you liked the first one this one is even better. A must read.” And now the Mercadante family

has published the third installment of David’s works called “The Liquor Store” which is also a Tampa crime story involving the Mob. “The interesting thing about the cover is that it is a picture of David’s grandfather’s real Liquor store in New York - It is no longer there but David did have some small jobs there as a boy- and his Dad grew up helping out there and worked there for extra money… David had a 16 x 18 picture of the store in his home office.” Lucy was insistent on using the photo as the cover, as it held spe-cial meaning to the family.  The process of publishing his work posthumously has not been easy. As Lucy says, “This is a very emotional thing for me to do but the family is happy I have been able to do it for David.”

All three of his exciting books are available on Amazon.com under David P. Mercadante. vThe Stories Continue...

On Oct 4th Mickey Castor, President of the Hillsbor-ough League of Women

Voters, spoke on the eleven consti-tutional amendments being added to November 6th’s ballot. She helped our ladies understand what voting “no or yes” to each amend-ment would mean.

This is a large number of amend-ments for one ballot, and it is not always easy to interpret their true purpose.  Mickey also reminded us that each vote is important, as some elections are decided by as little as one vote.  Thank you Mickey for your helpful insights into this most important election.

On September 13th, members of the Tampa Palms Women’s Club

gathered at Compton Park for our trip to the Seminole Harde Rock Casino. We ate lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, then explored the pool, spa, bakery, and casino areas.  The

casino is decorated in Rock & Roll memorabilia and motifs, with plenty of guitars and pictures of famous rock stars.  The ambiance was light and playful, with helpful employees everywhere. We enjoyed our visit, and recommend seeing this if you’ve never visited it before.

THE TAmPA FISHEr HOuSE GOlF ClASSICnOVEmBEr 4THOn November 4, 2012, The Tampa Fisher House Golf Classic will take place at Heritage Isles Golf Course in New Tampa. Our objective is to raise money and awareness to support the Fisher House, a ‘home away from home’ temporary lodging facility for families of wounded military members and veterans being treated at the James A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital.

The Tampa Fisher House, which opened in 2007, is a 16,000 sq foot, 21-bedroom home located adjacent to the hospital where these service members returning from combat areas like Iraq and Afghanistan undergo long, often difficult recuperation and rehabilitation. All money raised during the golf tournament will go directly to

the Fisher House which depends on volunteers and voluntary support to enhance its operations and programs. Learn more about Fisher House at www.fisherhouse.org.

We invite Tampa Palms residents to participate in this wonderful event as a tournament sponsor and/or player.

If you don’t play golf, but would like to sponsor a recovering soldier or sponsor a tee “In Honor of” or “In Memory of” a loved one please let us know. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated. If a tee sponsorship is not possible, please consider gift certificates or in-kind donations for golfers including gift bags, raffle items, etc.

Please make checks payable to Operation Helping Hand, and include a memo on the check, “FISHER HOUSE TAMPA.” Operation Helping Hand operates under the nonprofit tax exempt IRS code 501(c)(3) and receives funds destined for the Fisher House of Tampa.

Dog training is an intervention method to teach at-risk students

responsibility, anger management, self control and problem solving. At Kids and Canines, students are taught to train dogs that will be placed with people with physical disabilities or children with autism.

Kids and Canines is a unique program

in the Hillsborough County School District that uses dogs to make a difference in students’ lives. Middle school students are selected to participate in the program and are required to maintain certain levels of behavior in order to remain. The students are paired with a dog, teach basic and advanced commands, and are responsible for taking care of its grooming needs. Breeds such

as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and Goldendoodles are used because of their good-natured temperament. Training starts when the puppies are about 10 weeks old and continues for 18 – 24 months. The dogs are taught to open doors, turn on lights and help with the laundry. The everyday tasks that the dogs learn will improve the quality of life for a person with physical disabilities. The impact the program has on the kids is remarkable. Improvements are seen in patience, responsibility and their school attendance which directly affects their academic classes.

The clients who receive the trained dogs are physically disabled adults or families with a child that has autism. A person who is interested in a dog goes through an interview process. They come from Central Florida and will attend an intensive two week training class where they learn to work with an assistance dog. During this time, student trainers work with the clients to help them

become a successful service dog team. For the student, this is one of life’s most valuable lessons - to give up something you love to benefit another person.

Kids and Canines relies on the support of the community for donations and volunteers. All of the expenses related to the dogs are paid for from donations. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. Volunteer opportunities include advisory board members, puppy raisers, puppy sitters and volunteers to help with the day-to-day chores and administrative tasks. If you are interested or have questions about the program call 813-558-5406 or email [email protected].

After participating in Kids and Canines students are on a better path to becoming a productive member of our community and our clients lead more independent lives. At kids and canines we believe in kids and empower lives, one dog at a time. v

lOCAl 9u PIrATES TAKE 2nD PlACE In FSS STATE CHAmPI-OnSHIP

The Tampa Bay Pirates, a local 9U travel team managed by long-time Temple Terrace resident, Bob Killian, came in 2nd Place at the FSS State Championship tournament in Plant City October 5th-7th. Most of

the players live in and around New Tampa. The Tampa Bay Pirates is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization promoting competitive youth base-ball for select players by competing against other travel teams in the West Central Florida area.

Our goal is to develop the funda-mental baseball skills of players who are serious about the sport. We promote the traditional values as-

sociated with team sports: working hard, working as a team, striving to win, learning to accept success with humility, and learning to accept de-feat as motivation to improve. If you are interested in having your child try out for the Pirates or if you are inter-ested in supporting our team, please contact Bob Killian at 813-267-1059 or [email protected].
