Greetings Chapter-E!

We trust that each of you had the opportunity to spend time with Family and

Friends while celebrating the Thanksgiving Holiday. No doubt we all have MUCH

to be thankful for!

Despite the fact that some of us are currently unable to ride, we managed to find

some great opportunities for FUN during the last month. The month started off

with a large group attending “Romeo and Juliet” by the Mill Town Players. On the

6th, a nice group made their way up to visit Chapter-K and delivered them the Hot

Potato. We took advantage of the time and had a short brainstorming/planning

session afterwards.

Movie night on the 7th for a screening of Jennifer Lopez’s movie “Second

Chance”, and of course getting together to watch the Anderson Parade (and our

very own Chapter-E Couple of the Year, John and Janet Crabtree in the Parade)!

Tom Plesser and Michelle Ward handled the Get Together at Papa’s & Beer on

November 13th, and did a great job. Always good to see what others might come

up with for ideas!

Dropped in to join the fine folks at Chapter-S for the University Class “Toxic People” (and of course, plenty of food

and fun while playing BINGO). Michelle Ward managed to make her way home with a little extra money too.

As we prepared to close out the month of November, a good group joined in on the 27th as we tried out a new res-

taurant (Josie’s Chuckwagon in Taylors). Good food– and GREAT fellowship. We will definitely be visiting this

place again in the future, I believe!

The Ladies Leisure on the 29th was hosted by Michelle Ward– and the ladies made some very nice looking

Wreaths (one of which may show up in pictures next month!). It sounds like the ladies are enjoying this program,

and are looking forward to more projects, fun, and laughter!

Thank you to all of you for your prayers as Rhonda recovered from surgery. She is doing very well and should be

back up and riding in a few weeks.

Remember our Christmas Party on December 8th: We’re really looking forward to the fun and festivities!

Please be thinking about how YOU might be able to help Chapter-E succeed in the coming year. What are your

personal skills, what things do you do extremely well, and what role can YOU play in the coming year?

Speaking of folks “playing a role”- We would like to say a SPECIAL “Thank You” to Lyle Watson. Lyle has been

contributing Newsletter Articles on a VOLUNTARY basis for two years now. We sincerely appreciate his dedica-

tion and willingness to produce these articles for all to enjoy!

As we move into the Christmas Season– Please remember the REASON for each holiday. May each of you be

blessed with a Very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

Cold Weather Rides

Cooler, well OK, cold weather is here and there are a few things we need

to keep in mind if riding all winter is something you like to do.

Most important is the tires. Need to install the winter air right. That is a

running joke but not too far from the truth. Tire pressures are related to

temperature and when temps go down so does tire pressure. Upon checking

tires on all the vehicles in the driveway this fall all pressures were down 4

to 6 pounds or more. So get that air gauge out before taking a ride.

How about dehydration? Your body still loses moisture in the winter even

though you have several layer of cloths on. You just don’t notice it because

no sweat is running down your face. While outdoors in cooler weather stay

hydrated as you would any other time. Always keep a few bottles of water

in the bike.

Another is hypothermia. Out riding in the cold can suck the heat right out

of your body if not properly dressed. If you own heated gear wear it and

turn it on. It is easier to stay warm than to try to warm up once chilled.

Dress in layers and wear something windproof. A rain suit makes a good

wind block.

Don’t let a nice winter day go by, go for a ride.

History of Rock & Roll– Part 20

PALMETTO WINGS PIPELINE PAGE 12

Disclaimer: My source material is:

The Rolling Stone History of Rock and Roll Copyright 1986 by Rolling Stone Press

Rock from the Beginning copyright 1969 by Nik Cohn

When I concluded the last part, I was relating the story of Lavern Baker and Georgia

Gibbs and how Baker lost out on royalties when Gibbs covered one of her songs due to the looser

copyright laws of the time. This part picks up with Atlantic Records and continues from there.

It was Atlantic leading the way on quality rhythm and blues in the market. They were not

typical of other labels. Atlantic cared about recording quality. They worked with the artists and

helped their careers and put out sophisticated records better than other labels. Jerry Wexler

made fun of early rock and roll, calling it crap, and saying it sounded like gospel records, but he

was wrong. Others did not have his ambitions and taste, nor Atlantic’s personnel or cash. For

most R&B label owners, this music was still a gamble of a huge return on small investments and

most artists were perfectionists like the Clovers or have charisma such as the Drifters.

Yet there was still a lot of innovation. The Skylarks started out in the

schoolyard of a Junior High in Harlem, singing for fun, but not far from the

Apollo Theatre which had Amateur Night. An emcee would use a cap pistil and

“shoot” bad acts. Applause meant honor and adulation for weeks. Get shot and

you were humiliated. The Skylarks suffered through this.

Not bothered by this, they hung around a record store that dealt with vocal groups,

recorded or customers. They got the owner to help them do a demo record to be used in getting

a contract. They failed because it was so bad no one could get through the entire record.

Some of the members got disgusted, some got drafted. They met Raoul J.

Cita, in his late teens, who wrote songs and played piano. He managed them, wrote

arrangements, and merged them with the Harps led by Willie Winfield, with

Winfield as lead singer and Cita as pianist and arranger.

They tried the Apollo again, using a reworked song from the film Holiday Inn called

“A Sunday Kind of Love”. The audience loved it, and as they went off-stage, an

agent for MGM Records gave them his card and told them to come to his office.

Nervous, they rehearsed the song in the hallway when Leo Rogers, who worked

for a very small label, called Bruce, walked by and heard them. He got them to

his office instead and the group signed with him, but not as The Harps. Another

group in New York had that name, so Cita suggested the name The Harptones, and this stuck.

Page 13: PALMETTO WINGS PIPELINE - scchaptere.comscchaptere.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/December... · © 2018 -GWRRA Palmetto Wings Pipeline, Gold Wing Road Rider’s Association (Chapter

History of Rock & Roll, Part-20 (Continued)

PALMETTO WINGS PIPELINE PAGE 13

Of course their first record was “Sunday Kind of Love” led by Willie Winfield. It did not

sell big due to being on a small label and not appealing to more rural Blacks. Yet its influence

was immense. For the next ten years, it was the song to beat, one that any vocal group would

use to demonstrate talent and it was a slow dance number.

Still, it was old-fashioned. There was another style being perfected, a

little more complex and yet silly. It used nonsense syllables which had begun

around 1954. The Crows had a hit with “Gee” which had the syllables

dit-dit-duh-dit-dit. The Drifters had “Bip Bam”. Others had “Oop Shoop”,

“Sh Boom”, and “Zippity Zum”.

By now, vocal groups were the rage in Northern cities with New York the biggest,

followed by Chicago with the Moonglows and the Spaniels and. Detroit with the Diablos. LA

had the Penguins who released “Earth Angel” and which became the first R&B record on an

Indie label to hit the pop charts, going to number eight.

Of course Alan Freed was there to capitalize. In July of 1954 he moved to New York

proving that R&B was now big time. He was sued by Louis Hardin who had music copyrights

under the name Moondog and who wanted Freed to stop calling his show “The Moondog Show”.

Hardin won, so Freed changed the name of his show to “The Rock and Roll Show”, giving a new

name to this music. Freed failed to copyright the term but made sure people associated him with

the name. Rock and Roll. Perfect. Now one could tell the difference between R&B and the Blues,

and the Mills Brothers type of music. Rock and Roll did not fit any other category and shoed that

Fats Domino had more in common with Bill Haley than Wynonie Harris, and Elvis had more in

common with Ray Charles than Ernest Tubbs. The term would stick and come to take in a variety

of styles but under one phrase “Rock and Roll”.
