A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A

PMI VOLUNTEER

CULTURAL RESPONSIBILITY

Remember that you are coming on these trips to serve a culture that is different from your own- neither better nor worse, but different. Everything

we do at PMI is focused on the long-term effects it will leave on the community. We want to create of culture of empowerment, not dependency.

We likely have more to learn from those we are going to serve than they can learn from us. Be aware of the fact that you are brining your cultural ideals into a very different context, and be open and willing to learn from

and grow with those around you.

With this in mind, be sure to adhere to the following guidelines:

• Do not bring items to give out. We do not want to create a culture of handouts and misplaced expectations for future teams.

• Respect our permanent staff on the ground and their decisions. They know the region, culture, and people like the back of their hand. Ask questions and seek understanding before offering input.

If anyone is interested in reading more about international missions and some of the effects, we can provide resources at your request.
