REPORT

ITEM NUMBER: 6.1 Australian Institute of Animal Management Workshop

FROM: Director of Technical Services

REPORT NUMBER: PAMRG9

MEETING DATE: 22 November 2017

Summary: The Ranger Services Manager and the Senior Ranger attended the annual Australian Institute of Animal Management (A.I.A.M) Workshop in Melbourne 18 – 20 October 2017 to deliver a presentation on the city of Palmerston Rangers Dog Cage Lifter Vehicle. RECOMMENDATION THAT the PAMRG receives and notes report PAMRG9.

General: There was a featured showcase of animal transport vehicles, some of those presenters were Local Government organisations from the southern states that were able to have their vehicles displayed on site at the workshop. The Senior Ranger and Ranger Services Manager delivered the Dog Cage Lifter Vehicle presentation as a power point and video session. Some positive feedback was received from other presenters asking about the initial concept, construction and operation of the Lifter Cage Vehicle. The keynote speaker for the A.I.A.M. workshop was Mr. Jim Crosby, Chief Management Consultant for the City of Jacksonville, Animal Care and Protective Services, Florida, USA. Mr Crosby has extensive experience in animal crime investigation and teaches crime scene and other investigative procedures to Law Enforcement and Animal Control Agencies. The representation at the workshop was wide ranging with Local Government authorities from Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, New South wales, Queensland and even a Senior Ranger from Christmas Island Council in attendance. Associated agencies involved in Companion Animal Health and RSPCA Victoria also presented on several topics such as increasing de-sexing rates for dogs and cats, re-homing of pound animals, barking dog complaint processes, education and information on community strategies. On the final day of the workshop Mr. Crosby presented 8 case studies of fatal or near fatal dog attacks on people. From those 8 cases Mr. Crosby found through other evidence and forensic analysis that in 3
