Palma School Newsletter 2 January 2021

Dear People of Palma

Good bye 2020 Welcome 2021 The start of the spring semester is now just 10 days away It is a burdensome task of pandemic proportions to persist in compliance with ever fl uid state and county protocols for our safety distance learning delayed timelines for interscholastic sports competition and more People I care about at school and at home are all feeling a palpably diffi cult tension stress fatigue that are challenging to describe with mere words

But it has been steadily rejuvenating for me to take a few days this Christmas season to ldquovacationrdquo at home with my wife and three boys to do some mindless yardwork and household chores to eat() to wrap and then unwrap gifts to experience a magic of the season put into perspective by the simplest yet most profound of events the birth of a baby Jesus in a stable to a young mom and ldquofosterrdquo father who was laid to rest in a feeding trough for animals If this is good enough for the Son of God the Redeemer of humanity then we can fi nd purpose to celebrate despite our conditions

When classes begin we will return to learning online with a schedule that has become quite routine Soon your sons will wake up and make themselves presentable to classes on their devices taught by highly educated teachers who have made it their livesrsquo passion to prepare your sons for success But I believe we can embrace the challenges ahead with new vigor Resilience and self motivation are virtues tomorrowrsquos leaders will need in good supply Remind your sons that they need to care about their growth to care for others and to care for generations of the future

When you and they grow weary of exhausting conversations on the need to self-motivate or to persist remind your boys that it is their responsibility to work harder than their peers at becoming men of character mdash to invest in themselves Remind them they will be needed and that all secondary schools in our area have been dealt the same hand but Palma School has shown its commitments to playing that hand better Remind them that we go above and beyond to deliver an unparalleled experience for our students if even online that we are creating ways to foster community and healthy relationships among students and teachers to help students connect even when they are apart Remind them that we care about their intellectual growth along with his spiritualmoral physical and social growth Remind them too that this pandemic will not last forever When life returns to a new normal we all want your sons to be poised with the preparation and education to pursue success and leadership for life Remind them to be careful I mask up because I care about you will you do the same for me Remind them to love one another

Let us be reminded throughout the spring semester that with hard work preparation determination and role models who believe in them our students will exceed our expectations despite any pandemic Happy New Year Palma

Tips for student athletesWhen it comes to athletic scholarships and college sports recruiting it is important for you to become familiar with the rules and regulations surrounding the various college associations conferences and divisions Violation of the rules even while still in high school can result in ineligibility in your future athletic career Your fi rst task should be to determine which associations (NCAA NAIA and NJCAA) your prospective colleges and universities belong to and then carefully review those grouprsquos websites College-bound student-athletes preparing to enroll in a Division I or Division II school need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center to ensure they have met amateurism standards and are academically prepared for college coursework Before you can make offi cial visits or sign a letter of intent you must be registered

Happy New Year from the Guidance Department

Counselorsrsquo meeting with juniors biweeklyHigh school counselors will begin meeting with juniors biweekly in their Theology classes They will begin to prepare juniors for the college application process starting the fi rst week of February
