FROM THE PASTOR

Hey now, As we begin Holy Week, I would like to look back one day before we move ahead. March 24 is

the day that the church has set aside to celebrate Blessed Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero. With

the news a few weeks ago, by next year on March 24 we will be invoking St. Oscar Romero as

Pope Francis has accepted a miracle attested to the intercession of this beloved man from

El Salvador. If you do not know much about Archbishop Romero, I would ask that you take some

time to learn about his call and especially his conversion after the assassination of a priest friend,

Rutilio Grande Garcia, S.J.

It was that experience that strengthened Archbishop Romero to cry out against the injustices

perpetrated by the government. Romero was so filled with the Holy Spirit that he didn’t care for his

safety and only sought to serve Christ present in his people. That gift of the Spirit not only made

him walk closer to Jesus even when he was faced with death threats until the day those threats

became a reality as he was executed while celebrating mass.

His is such a powerful story for us to contemplate as we enter into Holy Week. We have sought to

walk closer with Christ during the days and weeks of Lent. That is why we rid our lives of some

things; so as to fill up that void with Jesus the Christ. Those moments when we hungered hopefully

we joined our prayers and ourselves with all our sisters and brothers that daily hunger and thirst for

the gift of life. Hopefully as we gave to those in need we felt that it merely cannot be just giving

money that Jesus spoke of in almsgiving, but that we are to give a part of our heart to those who

still suffer injustice.

The week ahead is an opportunity for us to draw ourselves closer to the one who is the font of life,

the one who heals us of our afflictions, the one who took upon himself all of our sins so as to give us

life eternal. Whether we have kept our promises of Lent or not, whether we have abstained and

fasted or not, this week is another opportunity to walk closer to Christ in his time of need. We may

not be able to lighten the weight of his cross, but how we will grow in grace if we venerate that

wood upon which hung our salvation.

So many women and men before us, like Blessed Oscar Romero, have been so changed by their

encounter with Christ that they would follow Jesus anywhere he led even if it meant they would

proclaim their faith by the shedding of their blood. We need to ask ourselves now as we stand at

the dawning of another Holy Week if we will be one of them. Will we allow ourselves to be

transformed by an encounter with Christ and speak up against the injustices in our world? Will we

face those who may persecute us for our faith with the courage and conviction that Jesus and the

cloud of witnesses have shown? Will we stoop to wash the feet of those who are in front of us

whether they are a friend or one who would betray us? Will we find ourselves at the foot of the

cross as Jesus dies for us or will we run away afraid that others may judge us for our faith? Will we

sing Hosanna today but then not think about Christ or his church and the rituals we celebrate once

a year until it is convenient for us on Easter Sunday? Will we truly enter this holiest of all weeks and

make it holy by our witness or will we just live this week as if it were any other? If we just follow our

normal routine and are not changed by this upcoming week, then let us ask ourselves, besides our

Lord dying for us out of amazing love what will it take for us to be transformed and walk as a

witness (the word comes from martyr in Greek) of Christ’s boundless love?

Hola a todos, Al comenzar la Semana Santa, me gustaría mirar hacia atrás antes de seguir adelante. El 24 de marzo es el día que la iglesia ha reservado para celebrar al Beato Arzobispo Oscar Arnulfo Romero. Con las noticias de hace algunas semanas, el año próximo, durante el 24 de marzo, invocaremos a San Oscar Romero, ya que el Papa Francisco aceptó un milagro atestiguado por la intercesión de este amado hombre de El Salvador. Si no sabe mucho sobre el Arzobispo Romero, le pediría que se tome un tiempo para conocer su llamado y especialmente su conversión después del asesinato de un amigo sacerdote, Rutilio Grande Garcia, S.J. Fue esa experiencia que fortaleció al arzobispo Romero para clamar contra las injusticias perpetradas por el gobierno de aquel entonces en El Salvador. Romero estaba tan lleno del Espíritu Santo que no se preocupó por su seguridad y solo buscó servir a Cristo presente en su pueblo. Ese regalo del Espíritu no solo lo hizo caminar más cerca de Jesús, incluso cuando se enfrentó a amenazas de muerte hasta el día en que esas amenazas se convirtieron en realidad, ya que fue asesinado mientras celebraba la misa. Es una historia tan poderosa para que contemplemos al entrar en la Semana Santa. Hemos buscado caminar más cerca de Cristo durante los días y semanas de la Cuaresma. Es por eso que libramos nuestras vidas de algunas cosas; para llenar ese vacío con Jesús el Cristo. Esos momentos en los que teníamos hambre con suerte nos unimos a nuestras oraciones y a nosotros mismos con todas nuestras hermanas y hermanos que diariamente tienen hambre y sed del don de la vida. Afortunadamente, al darles a los necesitados sentimos que no se trata simplemente de dar dinero de lo que Jesús habló en limosna, sino de dar una parte de nuestro corazón a aquellos que aún sufren injusticias. La semana que viene es una oportunidad para acercarnos más a Aquel que es la fuente de la vida, el que nos cura de nuestras aflicciones, el que tomó todos nuestros pecados para darnos la vida eterna. Ya sea que hayamos cumplido nuestras promesas de Cuaresma o no, ya sea que nos hayamos abstenido y ayunado o no, esta semana es otra oportunidad para caminar más cerca de Cristo en su momento de necesidad. Puede que no podamos aligerar el peso de su cruz, sino cómo creceremos en gracia si veneramos esa madera sobre la cual colgamos nuestra salvación. Tantas mujeres y hombres antes que nosotros, como el Beato Óscar Romero, han sido tan transformados por su encuentro con Cristo que seguirían a Jesús a cualquier lugar que liderase, incluso si esto significaba que proclamarían su fe derramando su sangre. Necesitamos preguntarnos ahora mientras nos encontramos en el amanecer de otra Semana Santa si seremos uno de ellos. ¿Nos permitiremos ser transformados por un encuentro con Cristo y hablar contra las injusticias en nuestro mundo? ¿Nos enfrentaremos a aquellos que pueden perseguirnos por nuestra fe con el coraje y la convicción que han demostrado Jesús y la nube de testigos? ¿Nos inclinaremos para lavar los pies de aquellos que están frente a nosotros ya sean amigos o alguien que nos traicionaría? ¿Nos encontraremos al pie de la cruz cuando Jesús muera por nosotros o huiremos temiendo que otros nos juzguen por nuestra fe? ¿Cantamos hoy Hosanna pero luego no pensamos en Cristo o su iglesia y en los rituales que celebramos una vez al año hasta que nos convenga el domingo de Pascua? ¿Entraremos verdaderamente en la más santa de todas las semanas y la santificaremos con nuestro testimonio o simplemente viviremos esta semana como si fuera otra? Si solo seguimos nuestra rutina normal y no cambiamos para la próxima semana, entonces permítanos preguntarnos, además de que nuestro Señor muere por nosotros por un amor deslumbrante, ¿qué nos llevará transformarnos y caminar como un testigo? (la palabra viene de mártir, de la lengua griega) con amor sin límites de Cristo?

The Chapel

Reminder that there will be a break for two weeks from Faith

Formation class:

• Tuesday, March 20th and Wednesday, March 21st

( no class due to Spring Break)

• Tuesday, March 27th and Wednesday, March 28th

(no class due to Holy Week)

Classes will resume Tuesday, April 3rd and Wednesday, April 4th.

Part of the children's sacrament process is to live their faith with their

family. During this break from classes we ask that you as a family

participate in the Holy week and Triduum celebrations. Children will

be receiving a “passport” that can be signed by a Priest or a faith

formation coordinator to show that they attended one of the

celebrations. Please check the bulletin for more information on Holy

week events and times.
