Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Paladin Paladin E-Bulletin No. 23 December 2014 | E-Bulletin No. 22 The Campaign by Women’s Aid, the Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation, and Paladin National Stalking Advocacy Service, has been calling for this change, to better protect women who experience domestic violence. Laura Richards, Chief Executive of Paladin said: "It is important that our laws reflect the reality of domestic violence. It is about power and control and the psychological impact is significant. Too many have had their lives ruined and many women have been murdered. Victims’ voices have been at the heart of our campaign and we are delighted that the Government has listened and that domestic violence will become a crime. This will send a clear signal that domestic violence must be taken seriously” Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid said: “We welcome the Home Secretary’s announcement that the Government will criminalise the patterns of coercive, controlling, and psychologically abusive behaviour which lie at the heart of domestic violence. We hope the new law will signal that a culture change is needed in responding to the abuse so many women experience. We look forward to working together with the Home Office to ensure the new law is effective as it can be, and that the police and criminal justice system are able to receive specialist-led domestic violence training so that they are able to fully utilise the new legislation. Rhea Gargour, and Antonia Packard for the Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation said: "We are thrilled that our campaign has been successful and that finally victims of domestic violence have a real chance to be properly protected by our legal system. We hope that this will lead to effective training of the police and a culture change where domestic violence is recognised as an unacceptable crime. We thank the Home Secretary and the Government for their commitment to helping victims of domestic violence and their children." DV Law Reform

We continue to campaign for a register on serial talking and DV perpetrators. We are calling on the Home Secretary, Theresa May, to act now to save lives by protecting women from serial stalkers and domestic violence perpetrators by introducing a register which would enable police to pro-actively identify, track, monitor and manage stalkers. Currently there is no existing framework which can track or monitor serial stalkers and domestic violence perpetrators. There needs to be a positive obligation on perpetrators to change their behaviour and take responsibility. They are the ones who need to be tracked, supervised and managed and not the victim.

Isac Training

As you may recall from our last newsletter, we developed an accredited Independent Stalking Advocacy Caseworkers (ISACs) training course through the University of Brighton and have already run the first course in London. This finished in November 2014 and was a great success whereby 12 ISACs were trained. This training has enabled Paladin to establish a network of ISACs across the UK as satellites to the national service which will save lives, give victims quality of life and reduce levels of isolation. It is important that there are more ISACs across the UK as their specialist knowledge and advocacy is vital in keeping victims and their children safe. In the long term it will save both lives and money.

Our next course is running in Spring 2015 with dates to follow. You can read more information on our website. To express an interest in this

course, email us at [email protected]

On November the 13th a joint Paladin and Collyer Bristow seminar tackling online abuse was held. The speakers included victims’ accounts, Paladin CEO Laura Richards, Alison Morgan – prosecutor in stalking case of Stella Creasey, Dr Claire Hardaker on her research paper on ‘Online Threats and Misogyny’. Nadine Dorries and Betsy de Thierry also spoke about their experiences of stalking .

Paladin continues to be present at various key events and campaigns across the UK to raise awareness of the advocacy service. On November the 25th Laura gave a keynote address at a conference in Enfield as part of the White Ribbon Campaign on White Ribbon day. White

ribbon day is inspired by the White Ribbon Pledge lead by men who campaign to stop domestic violence against women. Later in the afternoon our CEO Laura Richards also attended an event with Safenet AGM in Burnley. The day raised awareness of DV and stalking and Paladin were proud to take part.

Behind Closed Doors

Paladin were delighted to host the, ‘Behind Closed Doors,’ event in partnership with City of London Police and Victim support on November the 28th. Speakers included our Ambassadors John and Penny Clough who's daughter Jane was murdered by her ex-partner at her place of work. Fiona Bowman also spoke passionately about her own experiences as a victim of domestic abuse and the difference her employers made . The event was aimed at highlighting to employers their duty of care as an employer in relation to domestic abuse and stalking, It is important employers have policies in place to safe guard their employees who are being stalked or experiencing domestic violence. It was great to see so many people at the event wanting to take more responsibilities for their employees in this matter.
