INTRODUCTION
We have already introduced the "EX5600-6 Recommended Preventive Service program" to our customers to
promote good preventive service for the EX5600-6 in the field.
However, to effectively check for various kinds of cracks on welded structures like the Front Attachment Main and
Track Frame etc., periodical examination using an Ultrasonic Flaw Detector is indispensable.
This “Inspection sheet” is provided for easy checking of the condition of these structures on the EX5600-6 by
using our portable ultrasonic instrument series, the “HITACHI UT SERIES”. By executing periodical inspection
with the UT, an appropriate maintenance time can be recommended to your customer before the occurrence of a
lengthy downtime caused by increased cracks.
We believe that you will be able to:

DISTRIBUTION OF THE INSPECTION SHEET
1. Distribute copies of the inspection sheet onto
which echo data printout is affixed, after
making judgement, as described below.
2. Make two copies of each inspection sheet.
3. Send one of the two copies to Hitachi (L/O,
Representative), and the other to Hitachi
(Tokyo).

DEFINITION OF THE DEFECT LENGTH IN ULTRA-SONIC TESTING
NOTE: Defect is here defined as that, although varied slightly with welding technique, to be judged acceptable
from the stand point of welding structure.
H: Defect height
L: Defect length
P: Center-to-center distance between defects
j: Total height of insufficient fusion
A: Specified root face
1. Welding with complete fusion (Fig. 1)
1) H:
2 mm (0.08 in.) or less is acceptable.
2) L:
40 mm (1.6 in.) or less is acceptable.
P:
Although the H and L of defect are acceptable
as stated above, center-to center distance
between defects shall be 200 mm (7.87 in.) or
more.
NOTE: No defect is allowed in the range of
50 mm (2.1 in.) on each side of
butt-weld joint.
3) If defect exceeds the above-mentioned limit, it
shall be rejected.

2. Single groove welding with insufficient fusion (Fig. 4)
1) It is acceptable when h is not more than root
face A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or within A -5 mm (0.2
in.).
2) It is acceptable when h is not more than root
face A + 2 mm (0.08 in.), provided that L is 150
mm (5.9 in.) or less, and P is 200 mm (7.9 in.)
or more.
3) If root face A exceeds 2 mm (0.08 in.), it shall
be rejected.
3. Double groove welding with
insufficient fusion (Fig. 6)
1) It is acceptable when h is not more than root
face A + 2 mm (0.08 in.) or -5 mm (0.2 in.).
2) It is acceptable when h is not more than root
face A + 2.5 mm (0.1 in.), that L is 150 mm (5.9
in.) or less, and P is 200 mm (7.9 in.) or more.
3) If root face A exceeds 2.5 mm (0.1 in.), it shall
be rejected.
4. Other
For welded structures other than the
above-mentioned (1), (2) and (3), it is acceptable
that H is not more than root face A + 1 mm (0.04
in.).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Inspect with a probe.
2. Detect flaw on the CRT using echo.
3. Touch the max. value point of echo wave on the
CRT with a touch pen to input echo data.
4. Print out the input echo data.
5. Affix the echo data printout on the inspection
Sheet. (Refer to next page.)
6. Judgement
How to fill out the Judgement Sheets
• Wire Acceptable when it is judged that there is no flaw.
• Write Not Acceptable when there is flaw, and add one of
I to IV according to flaw levels listed in the right table.

Use of distance correction method and tip echo method for angle beam ultrasonic testing (How to affix echo data slips to the Inspection Sheet)
1) Check whether any defect (crack) is present or
not at the weld by the distance correction
method. At this time, flow echo in excess of
0% in the CRT graticule, when scanned with
the specified working sensitivity (STB-A3 ø4 x
4 - IS 50%) shall be evaluated. Also, record
the flaw lengths at the same time.
2) For flaw defection portion where the flaw is
detected by the distance correction method,
determine and record the flaw height (H) by
crack tip echo method. If no flaws are
detected by the distance correction method,
then crack tip echo method need not be used.

1 (1) It is acceptable that no flaw echo appears when scanning is made from sides A, B, C and D, using angle probe (2.25Z10 x 18A70).

Pattern 1: Sides A & B — Internal 1 defect Sides C & D — Open surface crack When root face is 5 mm or less, All of A, B, C and D show internal defects.
