CCONNELL The Coast Guard cutter Buck- thorn is being readied for its an- nual spring task of setting out ;approximately 124 buoys and other aids to navigation between 'Niagara Falls and Erie, Pa. . The job's start will depend on I how quickly there is evidence of a breakup of the ice fields out- | side Buffalo Harbor in Lake Erie. Last year, the Buckthorn got under way here the early part of April, aided by the icebreaker Eastwind and several freighters attempting to start their seasons. Winter Less Severe CWO John R. Bradley, skipper | of the Buckthorn, said this year's sailing through the ice field may be less hectic than a year ago when the Buckthorn encountered about 20 miles of ice before reaching open water en route to I Erie. "As of the moment, the ice \ fields don't appear quite as bad ! as last year, but we'll know more about it when the Ojibwa starts to probe the field shortly," skip- per Bradley said. He explained that his ship's task will start at Erie once the Buckthorn is able to sail. All the buoys and aids located in that area are on the dock at Erie. Continued to Niagara Falls As the work progresses, the Buckthorn will work on down to Buffalo placing aids in the Dun- kirk area, etc. The cutter on re- turning here will set out aU aids in the harbor and work on down the Black Rock Channel to the .Falls. In addition to the Ojibwa, the Buckthorn should have the aid of the big icebreaker Westwind, scheduled to be dispatched here from Baltimore when the St. Lawrence Seaway b opened about April 7. No Time Is Wasted It usually takes the Buckthorn from two to three weeks to com- plete the job. The cutter's crew of 14 besides Bradley is busily engaged now in painting the ship and making minor adjustments to the Buckthorn's engines. All buoys on the base at the foot of Fuhrmann Blvd. are also being painted and readied for the ! return of the Buckthorn from 'Erie. No Permits For Canal Use Permits are no longer required for craft using the New York Canal system. Elimination of this require- ment means one less clerical job for the skipper and saves the state some money too, 12,000 permits for pleasure craft hav- ing been processed last year.
