    Total solutions: The way tokeep costs in line with marketconditions

    By the time each car bodyreceives an ok from the finalaudit station and leaves thepaint shop, it will have passedthrough approximately 20 pro-cess stages, each with a num-ber of stations. The paint shopalso has material handlingequipment and other peripheralitems such as material supplysystems and air and waterpurification equipment.

    Quantum leaps in terms of costand quality can only be achievedwith new processes. Drr together with customers andpaint suppliers has participatedin pioneering projects to intro-duce new painting processes.

    Examples of this are globaldbuts for water-based paints,waterborne primers, powder

    paints and integrated paintingprocesses.

    and/or parts operating costs, etc as well as the peripheral condi-tions applicable in each case.

    During assembly in the bodyshop or prior to pretreatment,the exterior surfaces and thecavities of each body are was-hed thoroughly.

    This has the advantage that, at the subsequent inspectionstation, basic assembly defectscan be spotted and corrected,where appropriate.

    It also prevents most dirt par-ticles such as welding burrsfrom being carried over into thepretreatment plant.

    Ecopaint PT Pretreatment

    Pretreatment is the first of themany stages of the painting pro-cess. Here the body is cleanedand prepared for the subsequentcoating processes optimizedfor the material involved (steel,aluminium, magnesium, etc).

    Degreasing is followed by theapplication of a phosphate coat,which serves as corrosion pro-tection and provides a bondinglayer for paint application.

    Several rinse zones are inter-spersed around these andpassivation and neutralizationzones complete the pretreatmentprocess.

    Ecopaint EC Electrocoat

    All internal and external bodysurfaces require an even coat to ensure high-grade corrosionprotection. The fully automaticelectrocoat dip (EC) unit employselectrophoresis to deposit paintsolids on the body surface. As

    the body emerges from the ECtank loose particles are rinsedaway using filtrate recoveredfrom the paint.

    To minimize waste water volu-mes this filtrate is containedwithin a closed loop system andcascades from the end of therinse zone back to the dip tank.

    Application of underbody sealer

    Underbody protection is usuallyapplied prior to primer paintingeither on a continuous or on anindexed basis as required.Robots ensure the necessarymodel flexibility and preciseapplication.

    Seam sealing

    Special PVC materials are usedto seal body seams and flangesprior to painting. Seal lengthsand their accessibility dictatethe positions and numbers ofrobots required.     Despite an increasing level ofautomation, touch-up and repairwork is still a necessary part ofvehicle manufacture after mostproduction stages/coatingprocesses. We are now able, aspart of our ongoing productdevelopment program, to elimi-nate the need for touch-up andrepair work after some processstages, for example afterpretreatment/EC (as a result ofRoDip).
