LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parish Family,

This Sunday is the Fourth Sunday of Advent and this brings us to the threshold of the Christmas season. In these final hours of the Advent season, the Gospel reading for this Sunday takes us to the Annunciation:

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

(Luke 1:26-38).

Mary’s obedience to the will of God stands in stark contrast to the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Indeed, our Blessed Mother’s example serves as the perfect example of discipleship.

As we make our preparations for Christmas and the season that follows, let’s never lose sight of the One who must be our focus in every season — Jesus Christ our Lord. I pray that you and your loved ones will enjoy a peaceful and blessed Christmas season. May the one, true God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, enlighten your mind and fill your heart with the grace and peace of the Savior who came in humility. May the love and mercy of the Savior who will come again in glory give you comfort and hope in all the seasons of your life.

CHRISTMASMASS CHANGESDuring these trying times, we will continue to do our best to provide for the spiritual needs of our parish community.

Following state and Diocesan guidelines, social distancing and wearing masks will change some of the things we have traditionally done at Christmas. The biggest change will be the reduction in the number of people who can be in the church or banquet hall.This year, the 4:00 p.m. Christmas vigil mass will be live streamed from the church to the banquet hall and communion will be brought to those who are in the hall. We will not be able to accommodate the usual numbers of people that attend mass on Christmas. There will be a 6:30 p.m. mass and a 10:00 p.m. mass in the church Christmas Eve. This year we are not able to have the brass concert before the 6:30 p.m. mass.On Christmas morning we will offer an 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. mass. Note the change — there will be no 10:00 or 12:00 p.m. mass.Masks and social distancing are required at all liturgical celebrations. The Diocese continues to suspend our obligation to attend mass during this pandemic. We will continue to live stream one mass each weekend.You may participate in St. Mary’s 4:00 p.m. Christmas Mass via livestream at www.youtube.com/StMarysParishChardon. The Diocese will livestream the Cathedral Mass at 4:00 p.m. with the bishop.The mass is broadcast from the Diocese each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. on WUAB channel 43 (Spectrum channel 6). PRO-LIFE REFLECTIONFrom the beginning of time, prophets announced the Messiah’s coming. It’s about how the WORD became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14) Christmas is God in

human language and not simply about the birth of a child. It’s the coming of the One who will preach the Sermon on the Mount, instruct us by parables, and establish His Church. There has been born to you a Savior, who is Christ, the Lord. (Luke 2:11) In John 14:3, Jesus says “I will come again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, you may also be.”
