Paignton Community and Sports Academy
At PCSA we actively promote British Values. We recognise the diversity within our society and ensure that British Values are embedded in our curriculum. The teaching of British Values is integrated as part of the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) learning that takes place across all curriculum areas.
Actively promoting the values means challenging opinions or behaviours in the Academy that are contrary to fundamental British values.
The list below describes the understanding and knowledge expected of pupils as a result of schools promoting fundamental British values.
Democracy
An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-‐making through the democratic process.
The Rule of Law & Individual Liberty
An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety. An understanding that there is a separation of power between the law makers and the judges and courts, and that while some public bodies such as the police and the army can be held to account through Parliament, others such as the courts maintain independence.
Mutual Respect &Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
An understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law. An acceptance that other people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudice or discrimination. An understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination.
At PCSA we promote British Values in the following ways:
Democracy Our school council promotes the democratic process. Our student feedback and marking policy enables students to respond to their learning. Student and parent questionnaires are regularly completed and the results are acted upon.
Individual Liberty Students are provided with boundaries which encourage them to make choices safely. Students are encouraged to respectfully express their views and beliefs. Students have keys roles in school such as Prefects, Head Boy and Girl, and Sport Leaders and Literacy Leaders. Students have the opportunity and choice to take part in a wide range of different extra-‐curricular activities. Students are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-‐Safety, Radicalisation awareness, SEAL lessons and the Ethics department Schemes of Work. Students know who to speak to if they are worried or concerned about themselves or others, for example safeguarding staff and the Pastoral Heads of Year.
Tolerance of those of different faith and beliefs. We celebrate major world religions and their beliefs through Ethics lessons. Our Ethics curriculum provides a broad and balanced learning about other religions and reinforces messages of tolerance and respect for others. Our Geography curriculum provides opportunities for global learning activities which explore other cultures and countries. The History curriculum explores historical struggles such as the slave trade and racial issues. We support and encourage cultural exchanges and visits for students. We provide resources to ensure that all students are effectively integrated into the teaching and learning process.
We have links with Nigeria and Uganda which promotes appreciation of other cultures and beliefs.
Mutual Respect Students work in teams, share ideas in public and show respect for other pupils. Students participate in live productions throughout the year. Students work together in different groupings and situations in different lessons and subjects. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and model tolerance and respect in their behaviour with colleagues and students. Each week a ‘Thought of the Week’ explores different themes such as respect and beliefs across the whole Academy. The reward system contains specific categories aimed at appreciating mutual respect and thought for others, for example the Paignton Pride Vivo Point. Academy links, exchange of ideas and beliefs and visits with schools in Nigeria encourage understanding and respect of other cultures.
The Rule of Law We have Academy rules and expectations, with rewards and sanctions to encourage and promote a safe and community spirited learning environment. Students follow, respect and appreciate different rules and expectations when making visits outside the Academy site. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service support learning that we all have responsibilities and that there are consequences when laws are broken. Students are rewarded for compliance of school rules.
