Berries for the Birds! Now is the time to start thinking about fall planting. It is too hot to do much else in the yard. As you’re planning changes for your landscaping, consider add- ing plants that produce fall berries that are not only colorful and attractive, but very much appreciated by our bird population. The following are those berry-producing plants that we recommend highly: Agarita or Algerita (Berberis trifoliolata) is one of our native plants that produces bright, red berries in the late summer that the birds love. This are also can- didates for Agarita jelly, if you have enough plants and can work past the thorns to get the fruit. The foliage is a beautiful grey color. Aromatic Sumac, Three- leaved Sumac, or Skunkbush (Rhus aromatica) produces early berries that the birds eat quickly. These small trees produce a riot of color in the fall. Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is another unde- rutilzed shrub with beautiful lavender, purple, or white berries in the late summer and up until the birds finish them off. The berries grow along the axes (or stems) of the plant in long, thick clus- ters. When the leaves drop, the berries are still often on the graceful, arching stems for a winter show. Cherry Laurel (Prunus caroliniana) is an evergreen shrub that can grow 15 to 25 feet tall with nice, glossy foliage. The early spring blooms are inconspicu- ous, but the black berries that come after the blooms are food for our feathered friends through the fall. The first freeze causes some fer- mentation in the berries, but the birds persist in feeding on them through winter. Coralberry, Indian Currant, or Buckbrush (Symphoricarpos orbicula- tus) is a low growing shrub that is excellent for shad- ed areas, and it produces coral berries in the late sum- mer through fall. Birds are attracted, and it is a great, low maintenance plant. Flameleaf Sumac (Rhus lanceolata) is another native that also produces fall foli- age. Again, the red berries are short-lived because the birds get them readily as they ripen. This variety is food for more than 20 spe- cies of birds. Pigeonberry or Rouge Plant (Rivina humilis) is another shade loving shrub that grows to only 12 to 18 inches. This underutilized shrub produces white and pink flowers and berries all summer long and up until the first frost, and the ber- ries are edible, not only by the birds, but people as well. Roughleaf Dogwood (Cornus drummondii) pro- duces beautiful pearl-white berries that is food for some 40 species of birds. This small tree also has white blooms in the late spring and grows native through- out our Hill Country. Rusty Blackhaw (Viburnum rufidulum) pro- duces a large, flat cluster of flowers in the spring that turn into dark blue or black berries by fall. Another plant that we don’t see too much, this shrub grows to about 12 or 15 feet tall and gives us some beautiful fall color. Sweet Viburnum (Viburnum suspensum) has similar blooms and berries to the Rusty Blackhaw, but this shrub is evergreen and makes a nice backdrop to your beds. Again, we need to plant more of these. Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomi- toria) produces orange to red berries that the birds love. This prefers to live as understory growth and is native to the eastern half of Texas. It has adapted well in our area. This can be rangy shrubs or trimmed into sin- gle- or multi-trunked trees. Plant of the Week. Possumhaw or Deciduous Holly (Ilex decidua) is another berry produces that thrives in our area. Most birds don’t seem to like these berries, and they often stay on the trees a long time after the leaves have com- pletely dropped. The excep- tion here are the blue jays and cedar waxwings, and they’ll feed on these berries. Chores for this week. • Keep on weeding and using the vinegar and orange oil mixture to kill weeds. • Keep your flowering plants deadheaded. • Keep controlling the insect and mite infestations. • Keep sowing wild flower seeds. • Keep working in your yard in the cool of day. • Set your mower blade high to protect grass roots in this heat. We encourage your ques- tions, comments, or your own “Personal Plant of the Week” by writing David at [email protected].
