“THE ROAD NOT TAKEN” is a famous poem by the author Robert Frost. In the poem he talks about the road which all are afraid to take in life, the one which is risky dangerous and unpredictable. There is yet another road which is clearly laid before you. I call these roads choices. All our lives have come to such a point where we are given choices to make and it is not upon anyone else but us with whom the decision relies. And these decisions are taken by us thinking about the pros and cons. But in the present time I find people commonly taking a wrong road or choice without thinking about the pros and cons. And one such example is “THINKING BEFORE DRINKING AND DRIVING”.Last day a friend of mine said he couldn’t sleep without having a drink, hearing this I was concerned about his safety ,of him returning after getting drunk, but I shut my mouth about the thought. Later after two days he called me saying that one of his friends passed away in a road accident. The cause of the accident not speed, not mist, not friend, but alcohol. Thinking about it further made me realise that it was not the alcohol that killed him, but his choice. The choice of driving after getting drunk.A drive that thrills might be the one which takes away your dreams and those of many others like your family and friends. Dying like that is like a suicide that is driven by you but not accepted or thought of. So dear readers I want you all to think about the beautiful day that is given to you and once that is yet to come. But to go forth in the road of life is always a choice in your hand. Take the road which is less taken by people but the one which I hope will be a highway soon. A road which gives you fun and happiness in life, a road where you think and live, where you are given a chance to follow your heart and not donate. Drink and drive with a driver who is not drunk. Reach home safely and have a fun filled happy life which will make you and the ones with you happy and grateful. Have a great day. Have fun and live long.

THE ROAD NOTTAKEN

Graffi ARTHumans always try to communicate something or the other to someone or the other; and the most inexpensive way to do it is to put it out somewhere so that everyone can see it. But where? Practically everywhere - from buses to classrooms and the list goes on. Exempting certain official orders - ‘stick no bills’, ‘don’t spit’, all other unauthorised writings/paintings are called graffiti. So why say no to graffiti? Coz, most of them donot communicate anything useful and some of these graffitists are so lazy that they use p**n to paint the walls with their filthy mouths. Now, how about a graffito (singular noun for graffiti) that enlightens people’s minds or atleast makes them smile. That would be a nice idea, right?

That is exactly what the Goethe Institut along with renowned artists - both local and foreign has been doing under the project named ‘Conquer the Concrete’. The group has also garnered support from the city corporation and the local people. They have planned to beautify

public places in the city through creative wall paintings. These paintings are not just graffiti but they can be called ‘GraffiARTi’. The paintings vary in genre from pictures of animals to pictures of legendary film stars. There are also a few thought-provoking paintings. I don’t want to think if there could be a better way to welcome passengers who are boarding on and off trains, than a splash of bright colours on the 30 ft high escalator at the Egmore Railway station. There are many other places where similar paintings can be seen such as some of the facades near Besant Nagar beach. All these bring in me memories of the way in which the walls in coimbatore were adorned with paintings depicting characters from tamil literature at the time of hosting International Tamil Conference.

Wall paintings will no longer be confined to art galleries and temples and the local bodies ought to carry it forward to many more places.

Whenever I go to the local grocery store to get some veggies or a few packets of crispy snacks, the grocer gives me a plastic bag - whether I ask for it or not, at absolutely free of cost, wow! This shows that plastic bags are not banned in our city, not too much to worry about, atleast for now. After a few visits to the grocer’s shop, I had a pile of plastic bags in my house. I thought what if I could start selling the bags; ‘you fool who would buy them when they are given for free of cost’ chided my conscience. So then, what do I do with all these plastic bags. I decided to throw them in the trash. I would have certainly done so if I was unaware of the consequences.When the plastic bags are thrown with the trash, there are chances that the stray cattle unknowingly consume them. When plastic enters their digestive systems it causes serious infections often leading to starvation and death. There have been a number of cases reported on similar incidents in our country. Also the plastic bags which are not properly disposed often reach the oceans where of course, they get degraded and break into small pieces but these small bits are consumed by the fishes and marine animals like turtles that lead to their fatalities.

The plastic which doesn’t go to the oceans but is disposed in the landfills stays there for more than 1000 years because they are not biologically degradable.So, can putting a strict ban on plastics end this conundrum?While initially it seems possible, many people question the use of paper bags in place of plastic bags because it requires larger amount of energy and resources to manufacture paper bags as compared to plastic bags and also many believe that plastics result in lesser greenhouse emissions than that paper bags do. One possible solution would be the reuse and recycle of plastics with a ban on thinner plastic bags that are not as much durable and are hence not reusable. While recycling of plastics can’t be done in the households we can definitely reuse the plastic bags for as many times as possible.On that day I decided that whenever I go out for shopping or the local grocery store, I will carry a plastic bag of the required size from my home and hence I would not be in a situation to pay for the bag or carry my things in a ‘less than 20 micron’ thick plastic bag which is definitely not eco-friendly.

Yes, there is Hope. Not all who wander are lost. It is necessary for us as to understand what substance abuse is and how we need to overcome it. Let me tell you first of all that nd the resulting dependence on that substance that interfere with life’s activities. We need b oth professional help as well as moral support from the people whom we trust the most. First of all we need to call sin, sin. Yes, any form of addiction and dependence on it becomes abuse. One can get out of this by stopping this habit and this can be done and he or she can live a life that that they want to have. For this one has to have a plan that helps you get out of this bondage. Like our English word, the Greek word for “drunk” refers to intoxication, drunkenness and this regular habit leads to addiction, Addiction alters our mental, emotional and physical state.As youngsters we shouldn’t let this addiction control or rule our lives. First and foremost step towards victory over substance abuse is to be honest, open and willing to seek support from others. We shouldn’t be

depressed that the world has rejected us. Regardless of how we have fallen in to this abuse we must repent. This requires a firm commitment to change. It is a process of seeking strength to mould our character to resist urges to use the substance. This change of heart will help us overcome substance abuse in a better way. Repentance is replacing the choices to act sinfully with the choices to do the right things. Recovery is rebuilding a better life by no longer choosing a self-destructive lifestyle. Last and final step in overcoming substance abuse is to set your eyes on your goal of recovery. Make sure you seek the help of doctors who can guide you with your treatment. Stay focused and you will walk out of your addiction because there is Hope. The duty of every human in this case is to be comforters to the people who have become slaves to this addiction. We must extend grace and forgiveness. We must love them, show mercy and offer help. Let us help the helpless and be an inclusive community. Let us be agents of Prevention !

Later they looked for better places to live and started to move southeast towards Indonesia and China . Some migrated to different corners of the world while some met and mingled as often as they could.Modern students say there are 3 major divisions of mankind like the Caucasoids, people who lived in the Caucasus mountains (typical white race),the Mongoloids, Mongols who lived in Mongolia and the Negroids,who lived in the forests of Africa .There are no longer divisions based on neither skin color nor classification based on any other single trait like blood type or nose structure.This is how it all originated..
