OLLI Fall Social: High Tea and # eatreOn October 2, 2007 we hosted our fi rst OLLI at Casper

College social, High Tea & ! eatre in the lobby of the Barbara and Leland Scifers Dance Studio. Members were encouraged to attend and bring a nonmember with them. Attendees at the social dined on delicious high tea fare and sipped specialty teas while enjoying harp music by Colorado Springs Symphony principal harpist and Casper College alumnus Don Hilsberg.

In addition to harp music high tea attendees were treated to a presentation by the Casper College ! eatre Department. Tom Empey, director of the department, started things off with a preview of all the upcoming theatre and dance events at the college for the 2007/2008 season.

Following Tom’s presentation Kurt Stamm, guest director of the Casper College production of the musical " oroughly Modern

Millie and alumnus of the college, spoke about his vision of the production. He introduced costume designer Chelsea Warren who previewed some of the costumes and costume designs for the show. Cast members Summer Kilgore (Millie) and Matthew Gottlieb (Jimmy) topped off the afternoon’s program with performances of their signature numbers from the musical.

A thoroughly good time was had by all and we hope that our members and guests were inspired to see the show.

OLLI at Casper College Spring Social: A Traditional Scottish Dinner

We are pleased to announce that in Spring 2008 we will host a special dinner at the Izzak Walton League building on February 15 from 6-10 p.m. Our dinner will be based upon the Scottish tradition of honoring Scotland’s most beloved poet, Robert Burns. Burns dinners have been a Scottish tradition for over 200 years and we are excited to introduce the tradition to OLLI at Casper College.

Robert Burns was a popular 18th century poet whose most famous work was writing the lyrics Auld Lang Syne to an old Scottish tune that had been in existence for many years. He also wrote " e Selkirk Grace, To a Haggis, Tam O’ Shanter and John Barleycorn. Although he never made much of a profi t from his poetry Burns was well-liked by all who knew him and it was said that his conversation was even better than his poetry. In his early years he lived an unconventional life roaming the Scottish countryside, enjoying his whiskey and having numerous romantic dalliances. Later in life he managed to support his wife and nine

children on a civil servant’s salary while writing and publishing collections of his poems. As his poems gained popularity he became Scotland’s fi rst “celebrity poet” and was accepted into the highest stratus of Scottish society where he met Sir Walter Scott and other literary fi gures of the time. He died in 1796 of heart disease and the eff ects of his earlier youthful excesses.

Several years after his death Robert Burns’ friends began to gather for informal suppers to commemorate his birthday. At these suppers they would eat haggis, neaps, and tatties (sausage, boiled turnips, and mashed potatoes) while reading his poems and toasting his memory. At the end of the evening all would join hands and sing Auld Lang Syne, toast “Robbie” one last time, and head out into the winter night.

Our traditional Scottish dinner will follow this format but in addition to haggis we will include a fi ne dinner prepared by Bullwhip Catering, a special Scottish dessert researched and prepared by ! e Food Dude, Jim Logue; and a program of Scottish and Irish music by the fi ddle band Anastasia’s Fault. We also have a few other surprise activities in the works so please be sure to save the date and plan to attend. We will send out more details about this very special event in the next few weeks.
