am looking forward toserving as the Chamber’sChairman for the next19 months. That’s right,

the new Executive Committee,Board of Directors and I havetaken 19-month terms. TheChamber’s fiscal year previous-ly ended on November 30 butwe have made the change toJune 30 so that we can align ourbudget year with that of ourmembers, the TourismDevelopment Authorities andlocal government with whom we conduct busi-ness.

We have several new and exciting programs, services and events in place for 2009 and 2010and I predict there will be even more on thehorizon before the end of my term.

One of the newest assets to the Chamber andthe business community is the DobsonDivision of the Yadkin Valley Chamber ofCommerce. When last year’s Chair Mike Hesterand Chamber President/CEO Laurette Leagonbegan exploring the potential of a Division ofour Chamber in Dobson this past February, wehad 11 members with Dobson addresses. Wecurrently have 26 members in Dobson, a five-member Board, and an aggressive Plan ofAction. Please read the article included in thispublication by the Dobson Division’s very firstChair, Bonnie Shropshire to discover all theexciting things planned for Dobson in the com-ing months.

On January 15th the Chamber will host theNewly Elected Officials Reception at theCedarbrook Country Club. Our District 5 U.S.House Representative-Virginia Foxx, District 30

State Senator-Don East, District90 NC House Representative-Sarah Stevens, District 92 NCHouse Representative- DarrellMcCormick, Surry CountyCommissioners Paul Johnsonand Jimmy Miller, and YadkinCounty Commissioners KevinAustin, David Moxley and BradyWooten have all been invited toattend.

In August the Chamber andour local tourism developmentauthorities will welcome the

Harley Owner’s Group Rally. This is a three-dayevent that will bring more than 2500 people toSurry County. Many activities are plannedthroughout the county and all the events will beopen to the public. There will be furtherupdates as plans progress.

We will continue to host our signature eventssuch as the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival now inits eighth year, the Yadkin Valley PumpkinFestival, which will be celebrating its 13th year;the Meet the Candidates Forums in Dobson,Elkin, and Jonesville for those running for theTown Councils; and our Yadkin Valley WinterWine Shop in December. We will continue to grow our Chamber byincreasing membership; however, my mainfocus will be on the existing membership andfinding ways the Chamber can better serve andsupport you

Thank you for giving me this opportunityand I look forward to achieving great things forthe Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce andthe Yadkin Valley Chamber-Dobson Division in2009 and 2010.

ILooking Forward to 2009

I am so proud of what ourmembers, staff and Board ofDirectors have accomplished dur-ing the past year.

The two signature events ofthe Yadkin Valley Chamber ofCommerce are the Wine Festivaland the Pumpkin Festival. Thanksa tourism marketing grant fromthe N.C. Department ofCommerce Division of Travel,Tourism and Sports Developmentwe were able to purchase TV com-mercials on the Weather Channelfor the Wine Festival in theRaleigh Durham market. That advertising result-ed in an increase of attendees from that part of thestate by 59 percent. We also had several of thewineries tell us they sold every bottle of wine theybrought to the festival.

We had the 12th Annual Pumpkin Festival atthe end of September and it was deemed a mod-est success by the festival vendors and the down-town merchants in spite of the rainy weather.

In April of this year, the new JonesvilleWelcome Center opened its doors to welcome vis-itors to the area. Through a contract with theJonesville Tourism Authority, the Chamber man-ages the Welcome Center and supervises theTourism Specialists that keep the doors open until8:00 p.m. seven days a week. This agreement alsogave the Chamber Board an opportunity back inJune to give a well-deserved promotion to MistyMatthews, who is now the Chamber’s Office andTourism Manager. We assisted the Jonesville Townemployees with the Center’s Open House andDedication in June, and secured a grant to helppay for the Civil War Marker in front of the build-ing. We are now working with the Department ofTransportation to place directional signs to theWelcome Center on the interstate, which we fore-see attracting even more visitors to the YadkinValley area.

Back in January we hosted the Newly ElectedOfficials reception honoring those who won seatson the Elkin and Jonesville Town Councils. Wewere delighted to have all the commissioners andboth mayors in attendance for this inauguralevent.

At Misty’s insistence we implemented a SpeedNetworking event, which, if you haven’t partici-pated, I encourage you to contact Misty and get

your name on the list. It’s a greatway to make a lot of new contactsin a short amount of time.

And even in this year of eco-nomic uncertainty, we garnered43 new members for ourChamber in 2008.

This has also been a year ofcooperation and collaboration forour Chamber. We have partneredwith various groups and havemade, and will continue to make, great strides in improving theeconomy of the area we serve.

Your chamber participated inthe North Carolina Small Business andTechnology Development Center’s EconomicStudy Analysis for the Town of Elkin. We have twoseats at the table to select the projects that will befunded by the 2 million dollar Golden LeafCommunity Development Grant. We partnerwith Downtown Elkin Inc. on the events they hostin the historic downtown, we work, by contract, for VISIT the Yadkin Valley which promotes trav-el and tourism throughout the Yadkin ValleyRegion with a focus on Jonesville and Elkin.

We are also a part of the Tourism Partnershipof Surry County. This is a new organization thatreceives its funding from each of the TourismDevelopment Authorities in Surry County and ischarged with marketing Surry County to newaudiences.

We continue to look past our city limits, coun-ty lines and even state lines in our work withCascade Highlands, which encompasses countiesin North Carolina and neighboring Virginia.

We have continued to offer timely training formembers’ employees through the SurryCommunity College Small Business Center, workwith the Surry County EDP on economic devel-opment projects vital to our community, andthrough the Piedmont Triads Chambers group,we make sure our voices are heard in Raleigh.

It was an honor for me to serve on this boardas chairman for 2008. I want to thank everyoneon the Chamber Board and Executive Board foractively participating during my year asChairman. Without your input, hours of volun-teerism and monetary assistance, our Chamberwould not be the premiere business organizationit is today.

Although they represent a wide variety of media, styles, approaches, subjects, and backgrounds, theseartists were all invited to participate because they exemplify excellence in their field. The Invitationalshow has grown in popularity since its inception in 2003 and several participants have since had exhi-bitions at WVAC. Many art collections in the southeast have been enhanced by the opportunity to seethe work of these artists.

The Waterworks Visual Arts Center is a dynamic cultural venue dedicated to the presentation of sig-nificant art of our time. The Waterworks presents local, regional, national, and international aesthet-ic and cultural diversity through the works of emerging-to-established artists. The museum offers aninnovative program of exhibitions, education, and outreach that inspires and educates its regionalaudiences to explore the evolution and forefront of contemporary art.

The Invitational runs through February 7th, 2009. Hours are Monday-Friday 10am - 5pm(Thursday until 7) and Saturday 10am –4pm. The Waterworks is located at 123 East Liberty Street inSalisbury.

Further information is available at waterworks.org or Bill Colvard at Couture Design Group. 336.527.4696 • [email protected]

Work may be removed at the time of purchase for holiday gift giving. All sales benefit the educationalprograms at Waterworks and support these fine regional artists.

Look Who Has Invested in the Yadkin Valley Chamber????? 2008 Continued

Local Artist Participates inInvitational

The Fifth Annual Artists’ Invitational Exhibition and Sale at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center inSalisbury showcases the works of 13 local and regional artists and craftspeople. Among them is BillColvard, textile artist and designer-owner of Couture Design Group in Elkin, who is showing a collec-tion of hand-painted silks including scarves, evening coats, wall hangings and other wearables.

Without your input, hours of volun-teerism and monetary assistance, our Chamberwould not be the premiere business organizationit is today.

am looking forward toserving as the Chamber’sChairman for the next19 months.
