Baptism: First Saturday of the month at 1:00 PM. Parents must come

to the Rectory with the with child’s original birth certificate at least one

or two months in advance. Instruction is held on the Monday before

the Baptism at 7:00 PM. For more information please contact the

Rectory.

VI SUNDAY OF EASTER

Too many Christians see the Christian Faith

more as a set of rules to keep than as a love that

transforms—if we accept it. There is the risk, then,

that to do good, avoid evil, and following the com-

mandments becomes a kind of human achieve-

ment. For loving God is not a human work, but ra-

ther the gift of God. So the text of today’s Gospel

should be read more like, “If you love me, you will

by this love I have given you, keep my command-

ments.” Thus, the keeping of the commandments is

the fruit of the love, not the cause of it. Love

comes first. And when love is received and experi-

enced, we begin, by the power of that love, to keep

the commandments. It is possible to keep the com-

mandments to some extent out of fear and by the

flesh. But obedience based on fear tends not to last

and brings with it many resentments. It is far better

to keep the commandments by the grace of God’s

love at work within us. Love has the power to

overrule the selfishness of the flesh. Love has the

power to transform our desires from our own self-

ish ends, toward the beloved - Jesus Christ.

VI DOMINGO DE PASCUA

No os dejaré desamparados. Volveré. Esta prome-

sa de Jesús, de volver, no se refiere aquí, y en este

contexto de despedida en la última cena, a su venida

gloriosa al final de los tiempos, sino a su retorno a la

vida, tras la muerte, en la resurrección. Por eso dice

"dentro de poco", es decir tras los tres días de su

muerte, aunque su vuelta no será notada por todos.

Por eso añade que el mundo no le verá. En efecto,

consumada la crucifixión y el entierro, la gente le dio

por muerto. Y aunque es verdad que los evangelios

recogen el rumor entre los soldados y oficiales de la

desaparición del cadáver, lo cierto es que los rumo-

res se disiparon y se quedaron tranquilos, dándole

por muerto y desaparecido. En cambio Jesús les ase-

gura que ellos, los discípulos, sí le verán, porque

ellos lo quieren y creen en él, y hace falta fe para

poder ver al resucitado. La muerte es un hecho histó-

rico y datable, pero la vida resucitada trasciende el

tiempo y el lugar. Resucitar es morir a esta vida para

empezar una vida distinta, inimaginable pues que

aún no tenemos la experiencia. Se trata de otra vida,

es decir, de otra forma de vivir, sin la limitación de

esta vida mortal. Por eso en otras religiones recurre

al mito de la reencarnación, es decir vidas sucesivas

e indefinidamente. Jesús ha vuelto. Ha resucitado.

Ese es el punto clave de nuestra fe. Creemos en Je-

sús, creemos que es Dios, es decir, creemos que mu-

rió y resucitó y vive para siempre. Y aunque confe-

samos en el credo que subió al cielo y está sentado a

la derecha del Padre, eso no es más que una expre-

sión literaria para reconocer su igualdad con el Pa-

dre, es decir, que es verdadero Dios. Pues también

creemos que vive y está con nosotros. La vida resu-

citada, la otra vida o vida eterna, no es como ésta

que limita la presencia de los seres vivos en un solo

lugar. El cielo no es el lugar donde está Dios y los

santos y adonde esperamos ir. El cielo es estar con

Dios, no el lugar, porque Dios es el colmo de nuestra

felicidad.
