Recent Trends and Business Challenges
Frequent and successful new product introductions are essential for organic growth.
However, many companies find that revenues from new products fall short of expectations
“... in 2000 : about 10 times more product launches than in 1980...”
“... on average, 52% of revenue and 46% of profits are directly attributable to
products introduced within the last five years...”
“... 50% or more of new product introductions fail due to misalignment in R&D and
manufacturing ...”

Some Issues…
• A “Recipe” means different things to different people
• Rolling out a recipe from R&D to Manufacturing is currently in most cases a labour intensive
process characterised by :
- a multitude of systems
- non harmonised terminology
- need for experience based translation from R&D to Manufacturing recipe
- 2 worlds not in sync, even with the best will in the world
• True “Enterprise Recipe Management” with smooth transitions between different recipe types
is considered to be one of the following :
- a naive dream
- maybe a possibility for the distant future
- a strategic goal to be achieved mid term
- a simple reality

Manufacturing Operations Management
• The Product to Production
process is critical to the
customer’s ability to bring
products to market, but it is not
the only process that the plant
must manage

Vertical
Integration
• The ERP tells each plant what
to make and what information it
wants in return. It is the plant’s
responsibility to interpret and
respond according to its
resources and capabilities
Supply
Chain
• The primary role of the plant is
to convert raw materials into
finished products on time, on
quality and on price
