This publication contains a selection of projects developed by the artistic director, the artistic team and a dedicated group of artists and citizens, based on the first round of the application and additional proposals from concerned artists and citizens.The selection is preliminary. The proposed projects have been chosen according to the criteria that we applied in the first round of the application process (relevance to the concept of the programme; active involvement of local artists; participation of citizens; integration of migrant ethnic and foreign resident as well as Turkish Cypriot communities). In the second round and along the lines of the jury’s recommendations we have focused more strongly on the European Dimension and the artistic excellence of the projects, involving partners from Europe but also from overseas; and dealt with issues and specific themes on a high artistic level that meets the expectations of an international audience. Additionally, we have tried to create a good mix of projects and it goes without saying that some are more of local, some more of international interest and some, fortunately combine the best of both worlds. Through the three main production lines of “Myth and Religion”, “World Travellers”, and “Stages of the Future”, Pafos 2017 brings culture right into the city by setting the action out in the open. The city’s attractive outdoor spaces - from church squares to mosque courtyards, from entrance gates to roof tops, from the unique archaeological sites to the oriental Turkish Cypriot quarter of Mouttalos, from the waterfront to the atmospheric surrounding highlands - Pafos offers varied representative settings upon which human creativity has thrived and led to the development of local culture and civilization. For thousands of years in this part of the world, the passion for culture was acted out in the open - from

ancient Egyptian Thanksgiving Dancing for good harvests to River Games on the Nile, from Hellenistic philosophical argumentation and the oratory of public speakers at the Agora to the Olympic Games, from Cretan acrobatic bull-leaping to Turkish Jereed equestrian games, from Middle Eastern ancient markets and food fairs to drama performances at ancient Greek and Roman theatres in Cyprus and surrounding countries - all have been taking action under the Eastern Mediterranean skies. The direct bond with the natural environment has been so strong that creating out in the open became a fundamental need and, by default, a Way of Life synonymous with culture and civilization. Moreover, and especially in theatre, the landscape became an actual part of the backdrop and was taken as part of the artwork itself. Following up and capitalizing on this ancient trend, Pafos2017 sets up a contemporary Open-Air Factory with its cultural machinery installed mostly outdoors. Nature’s tremendous inspiration, Pafos’ rich cultural heritage, and the willing energy of the city and its citizens, are the main power stations fuelling the Open-Air Factory. Within the setting of the Open Air Factory the ‘oil’ of Linking Continents – Bridging Cultures will lubricate disfuctional relations and rusty connections adding value to our citizens lives, to those of the migrants who live in Pafos and Cyprus, to that of the children and young people who are the next generation to have a say in Europe, to those of Turkish Cypriots refugees who had to leave a life behind in Pafos in the aftermath of the 1974 events, and last but not least, to those of the foreign residents and the hundreds of thousands tourists who visit Pafos and share a part of our way of living in Europe with us for a short while.

“Her gods and men call Aphrodite, and the foam-born goddess (…) and Cyprogenes because she was born in billowy Cyprus…” (Hesiod, Theogony)

Myth and religion, indelibly etched on Pafos’ cultural heritage, highlight the creative dimension of “falling in love” - an inspired condition, a heightened state of mind, an expansion of consciousness - a force so imaginative and inventive, that it has catalyzed tremendous creativity with endless manifestations throughout the ages.

Aphrodite/Venus, beauty, joy and the rich texture of the ancient myths make up the themes of this programme pillar weaving the stories and legends that began and evolved in Pafos and the Eastern Mediterranean which now both locals and Europeans perceive as an integral part of their culture.

The project, which refers directly to the famous Roman-period mosaics, is inspired by the idea that Pafos has always been an open society. The individual pieces of its many influences will be incorporated into a unified picture. The immigration of European citizens, as well as of people from non-EU countries, whilst enriching the cultural fabric also necessitates faster and deeper intercultural dialogues. The aim of this project is to energize youth organizations active in Pafos, schools as well as young people whose families live in the northern part of the island but were originally from the area. In a parallel endeavour, Greek and Turkish Cypriot youths will try to reconstruct a unified Pafos from a time when the nationalist conflict was nonexistent or at least insignificant. Fragments deriving from different social groups living in Pafos will function as pieces in a large beautiful mosaic, whether image, text, sounds, photographs, video or ready-made objects. Weaving these fragments together, the young creators will re-address the origins of their culture and discover that apparently disparate present forms have much more in common as we travel back in time. Many of the stories, heroes, folk songs and fairy tales involved are common to many European people. The whole project will aim to substitute the myth of conflict with interactive creativity.

Under the guidance of professionals and teachers, groups of young people in Pafos will be given the task of collecting examples of the above materials. Traditional media or contemporary technology could both be employed.

Examples could include:- Quotations and/or sayings from older generations whether natives or immigrants to Pafos- Old pictures from the places that older people or new cultural groups

come from- Songs, tunes, lullabies in recordings of individuals made by young

participants - Videos or photographs of traditional

customs (cooking, dancing etc.), revealing factors common to all cultures

- Verbal or written responses to Pafos, as well to memories of inhabitants’

places of origin- Any object (old documents etc.) or sign that is of cultural significance These would then be structured with the help of visual artists, teachers and technicians, with the aim of creating a public presentation. The final results however would be determined by the young participants themselves. Annual presentations by the Open-Air Factory in neglected and run-down areas, such as the Turkish Cypriot quarter of Mouttalos or the surrounding Turkish Cypriot villages, will reawaken co-creative spirit and restore the areas’ former cultural diversity.

The possibility of a twin project in a similar location elsewhere in Europe is also being explored. Places where Cypriot migrants live, such as the UK, would be appropriate, in highlighting similarities in people’s historical experiences. This project relies on the active participation of the citizens of Pafos, therefore it is an open process where people learn by being active participants. On a bi-communal level, the “Open Khan” is crucial in its invitation to Turkish-Cypriot refugees, whose families had once lived in and around Pafos, to participate in this project.

Helen by Euripides was first staged in Athens in 412 BC. In his drama Euripides condemns warfare, depicting Helen and her beauty in dark and deceiving terms. Helen was traditionally presented in Greek literature in a negative light, because her elopement with Paris sparked the Greek – Trojan War.

Euripides surprises his audience in his use of a little-known myth about Helen and the Trojan War, one first introduced by Stesichorus and Herodotus: the Spartan Queen is not abducted by Paris but rather the jealous goddess Hera replaced the real Helen with an idol (eidolon), leading Paris to kidnap the false Helen, while the real one is transportedto Egypt by Hermes.

In Helen Euripides treats beauty not only as the cause of much suffering but also deals with its power of deception, one used by the Gods for their own gain. Wars, frequently waged for futile and dreadful purposes, are often well disguised in beautiful and desirable forms. A vivid and poignant moral for a country whose capital remains the only divided one in the world.

Four drama schools from Europe and Asia, namely the Folkwang University (Germany), the Shanghai Theatre Academy (China), the Ramallah Drama Academy (Palestine) and the Satiriko Theater Drama School (Cyprus) have been invited to stage full productions of the tragedy in Pafos, using their own languages, their own director and costume designs, props and lighting, but linked by a pre-agreed set design.

The finale will unite the four drama schools in a multi-lingual international co-production. The ultimate aim however is a shared vision: a confrontation with classical material, utilizing different cultures and approaches to theatre, seeking a common language of theatre and rediscovering it in its utopian, trans-national form.

This project is the world premiere of several contemporary works for children’s choir and brass quintet, inspired by St. Paul’s missionary journeys. Award winning composers from all the countries that St. Paul visited will create new works specifically for this project.

St. Paul, who made four missionary journeys across the Mediterranean region, is not only a world traveller because of his missionary trips but also because of his teachings, which have influenced people the world over.

St. Paul is the author of one of the most beautiful texts ever to be written, First Letter to the Corinthians, “Hymn to Love” is a letter of hope, courage and optimism.Texts from different religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism,

etc.) from the current contemporary countries that he visited as well as cultural and musical elements from these countries will be incorporated into the commissioned compositions. The performance will take place in the open air at the Square of Religions, a fluid space connecting worship shrines of various religions, starring Greece’s most famous Byzantine cantor, Petros Gaitanos. The work will start with the Byzantine “Hymn to Love” gradually shifting into a contemporary idiom.

The performance of these works will invite the audience to become world travellers themselves, journeying to the same nations as St. Paul and beyond, as each composer presents his or her own interpretation of his message of hope and love.

Arceophon, a son of a Phoenician, falls in love with Arsinoe, daughter of King Nicocreon who refuses to give his daughter to Arceophon because of his Phoenician descent and darker skin. Eventually he is betrayed by Arsinoe, and hangs himself. Aphrodite punishes Arsinoe by transforming her into a stone statue.

Directed by acclaimed director Izumi Ashizawa, this theatrical play will address issues of racial discrimination in cooperation with immigrant populations. In contrast to the original myth, Arsinoe will be secretly in love with Arceophon and therefore also a victim of social pressures.

Aphrodite brings to life the sculpture of Galatia that Pygmalion has fallen in love with, they marry and have a son Pafos, after whom the city is named.

The Aeolian Wind Park located at Kouklia near Pafos is also mythical in its appearance and dimensions. Pioneered by Denmark, this alternative source of energy is the first of its kind in Cyprus.

Dancecyprus will be responding to these opposing aspects of Pafos by creating Diptych – the neo-classical ballet ‘Galatia & Pygmalion’ and the contemporary work ‘Power of Wind’. Additionally there will be associated projects for the general public, school children and ballet students.

Denmark and Cyprus mark the northern and southern borders of the European Union. Dancecyprus, co-creating with its Danish partners, will inspire, entertain and educate, building bridges between Danish and Cypriot dancers, choreographers, ballet students and school children. There will also be workshops specifically targeting the children of migrants. It will be attempting to merge northern and southern winds into a common multi-cultural stream. These projects will be full-scale productions with professional dancers of the Royal Danish Ballet [RDB] and Danske Danseteater [DDT]. Dancecyprus and its partner Southern Dance Academy SØnderborg will be collaborating with the SØnderborg-based Jutland Symphony

and the Cyprus Symphony orchestras respectively.

The Open-Air Factory will provide a site-specific setting by the Mediterranean Sea using the Aeolian windmills as a backdrop, whilst in Denmark the event will take place within the striking architecture of the Alsion Concert Hall.

Southern Dance Academy SØnderborg already has an established Summer School, working with teachers from the RDBS and DDT. With Pafos 2017 as a catalyst, it will be extended to include Pafos as a partner.

The musical One Touch of Venus was one of the most successful collaborations ever on Broadway, composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Ogden Nash and book by Nash and S. J. Perelman.

One Touch of Venus was one Kurt Weill’s biggest successes in the USA, running for more than 500 performances. It was inspired by the Pygmalion myth – another Pafos myth known worldwide, the inspiration of masterpieces such as Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale and Bernard Shaw’s My Fair Lady.

The co-production will enable artists from the USA, Germany and Cyprus to bring Weill’s masterpiece to life.

A new site-specific contemporary musical studying beauty, with Pafos at its centre. Does beauty have a trans-cultural power to unite people? Directed by award-winning director George Rodosthenous and based on interviews with Pafos residents, it traces the history of Aphrodite. Performers of all ages will create a new narrative about beauty.

Just as veils covered the beauty of Aphrodite, a veil of Pafian pastry will envelop the gastronomic treasures of Europe.

The project will be reinventing ravioles, a traditional Cypriot pasta, filling it with distinctive stuffings from Pafos as well as Europe’s different regions.

The Travelling Playground will take the children of Pafos on a magical journey through the myths, folk tales and traditions of Europe. The Open-Air Factory will bring this experience to children in their very own neighbourhoods, using a series of temporary structures specifically designed for the playground. This interactive and playful experience will help young participants to become active creators in the Open-Air Factory.

Since ancient times, folklore has passed cultural values and traditions on from one generation to the next. The Travelling Playground will help young Pafians discover the richness and diversity of European culture as well as the common narratives tying us all together. The playground will have three elements: “Dragons of Europe”, “Shadow Theater – Karagiozis” and “Modern-day Troubadour”.

“Dragons of Europe”Dragons of Europe involves the creation of interactive games for children and grown-ups alike, focussing on tales with dragons from across Europe.

Examples of folk tales translated into interactive games:

1. Cypriot dragons challenge the hero into accomplishing great feats of

courage and ingenuity.

In “Spanos and the Forty Dragons”, the dragon asks the hero to squeeze a piece of rock until water comes out. He tricks the dragon by squeezing a

piece of Anari soft cheese.

Participants will squeeze a piece of foam, containing liquid. If the liquid

squeezed out exceeds a certain amount, a point is scored.

2. Scandinavian and German dragons are wingless but with a poisonous bite. One living near Klagenfurt floods the

area. The Duke offers a reward for its capture, the hero ties a bull to a chain, the dragon swallows it and is hooked and killed.

Participants attempt to throw a ball into the dragon’s opening and closing mouth; a point is scored if they succeed.

3. In the folklore of the Chuvash people, the Great Dragon is evil and breathes fire.

The dragon steals the sun and the moon, and devours the locals. The hero slays the dragon, replaces the sun and the moon, and frees the population.

Participants fish out the moon, sun and people from the dragon’s belly.

If the hook touches the belly, an alarm rings and the game is lost.

4. In French tales, the dragon is enormous

and has green scales. It guards treasure and devours people. It has one eye, which it removes to bathe, making itself temporarily blind.

Participants go through a set of obstacles, remove the eye of the dragon and steal the treasure.

“Shadow Theater – Karagiozis”Cypriot tradition also consists of the theatre of shadows. Puppeteers from both sides of the island will be performing in Greek and Turkish with subtitles,

fostering co-creation between the communities. Shadow theatre puppeteers from Asia and Europe will be invited to create a contemporary overview of this kind of theatre. The project hopes to revive folklore customs and performances within the “Open Khan”, creating opportunities for communication not only between the two Cypriot communities but also among the nations of Europe.

“Modern-day Troubadour”Visitors will become modern-day troubadours; an interactive table will allow children to visualize and explore sounds by manipulating objects on a specially designed table. The so-called Reactable Experience is an intuitive and educational experience, customized for our Travelling Playground, featuring elements of traditional folk music and stories. Interacting visitors will take centre stage whilst learning about sound and traditional folklore.

world travellersTranscontinental travel via Pafos was first launched by the goddess of love and beauty, who set off as Ishtar in Western Asia, evolved to Aphrodite upon meeting with Hellenism in Pafos, and ultimately became Venus upon reaching Rome and beyond, throughout Europe. The westbound goddess was the first to claim Pafos as her own city, ultimately putting it on the world map. Another audacious traveller, Saul, who was later renamed Paul, began his journey in Tarsus (present day Turkey), and shuttled back and forth between Jerusalem, Antioch and Damascus before finally dropping anchor in Pafos. He launched his first westbound transcontinental mission from Pafos before sailing onto Asia Minor, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and beyond. The work and travels of the “Apostle of the Nations” had a formidable and lasting impact on the whole of Europe. Six thousand years of subsequent invasions, wars and conquests by Africans, Asians and Europeans, turned Pafos into a fascinating “melting pot” of transcontinental cultures. Ptolemies from the south, Phoenicians and Persians from the east, Byzantines and Ottomans from the north, Venetians, Franks and Lusignans from the west among other, have all added their mosaics in creating the fabulous multicultural heritage of Pafos. Following the mythical and historical visitors

of the past, the new migrants and tourists are the world travellers of today. Ethnically-diverse migrants who have recently moved to Pafos continue to live within segregated and rather isolated communities. With the common language and immediacy of local folklore, Pafos 2017 brings the ethnic groups and communities into co-creation projects highlighting their common elements, values and European identity. Tourist activity, particularly from spring to autumn, is omnipresent in Pafos. The tourists come mostly from central and northern European countries in search of sun, sea, fun and, for the culturally inclined, the unique archaeological treasures. Pafos and its secret potential make such an impression that some of the visiting tourists choose to stay and make it their home. Others choose to retire and spend the rest of their lives in this corner of Cyprus. Through a series of residency and exchange programmes, artists and creators become the world-travellers of the immediate future, carrying their skill and imagination across transcontinental bridges. Through a variety of novel projects, Pafos reaches out to world travellers - mythical, historical and current - and invites all to join forces in a celebration of co-creation at the crossroads of three continents.

The Alien Trail is a project to heighten awareness of the migrant population in Cyprus. It aims to present these groups to Cypriot society and in doing so increase understanding and acceptance.

The first and most important step is these invisible people are seen. They interact with us taking menial jobs and carrying out roles no one else wants. Their tasks fulfilled they become forgotten and invisible again. Once this initial problem has been overcome, a phase of acceptance and integration can occur.

A group of renowned photographers from Europe and the Middle East will gather for a week in Cyprus, working freely on photographic assignments involving the migrant population. The results will be presented in exhibitions and published in a book.

A video art workshop will involve the children of migrants. Its aims to bring together children of diverse backgrounds to experience and create video art. The intention is to provide them with an opportunity to express themselves, without language barriers, in a visual language. A documentary will result, to be sent to European and international film festivals.

This project will be organized especially for children aged 6–16 of all nationalities living in Pafos. We will be inviting pupils from all schools in Pafos both private and public.

To promote co-existence and friendship among the children of all ages, each will be paired or grouped with a child of a different nationality.

In filling in their registration forms they will have to think of a bodily posture they will use on the day of the project. For example: holding hands to show that they are friends.

This takes us to the core of the project. A very long white sheet, approximately 1 km long, will be used for this project. It will be laid along the seacoast of Pafos. All the young children of Pafos will be invited to join in with a friend of a different nationality, the friends will paint themselves in the posture they declared on their forms by lying down on the white sheet. Adult volunteers will make the outline of the silhouette of the children using black paint. The children will use paint to fill in the silhouette, portraying their particular friendship and then making a dedication on the white sheet by writing their name and country and a message to Europe. Children and adults of all ages and

nationalities will be brought together to work with their imaginations and each other. Locals will be brought into direct contact with foreigners and everyone will be able to enjoy the children’s talents.

4.aphrodite’s migrations:crossing boundaries, questioning borders

Aphrodite has for centuries been used as the symbol of Cyprus, “birthplace of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love”, yet in a manner censoring its multiple personas and denying its complexity. A more discursive way of viewing Aphrodite is as a liminal goddess, mediating between day and night, male and female, love and war, East and West. Liminality is an apt description of the geopolitical predicaments of Cyprus, treated as being situated between Greece and Turkey, Asia and Europe, Christianity and Islam, tradition and modernity, yet neither one nor the other.

Aphrodite has traversed various Mediterranean geographies, in her manifestations from Astarte to Venus, appearing in various androgynous forms, and being feared as well as venerated as a goddess of passion, love but also war. This event will gather intellectuals, scholars, writers and artists from Cyprus, the Middle East and Europe to reflect on issues pertaining to crossings. These can range from the topics of migration, cultural products or ideas, to crossings of national, ethnic, gender or other boundaries.

Yiannis Papadakis (academic consultant for this event) is a Greek Cypriot social anthropologist at the University of Cyprus who has conducted research on both sides of Cyprus. His major book, Echoes from the Dead Zone: Across the Cyprus Divide has been published in Greek, Turkish and English.

Michael Herzfeld, Professor of Anthropology, Harvard University and a leading scholar on Mediterranean societies with a focus on Greece and Italy, has agreed to advise on themes, persons and ideas, and to participate.

Rana Zincir Celal, a Turkish Cypriot consultant based in Turkey and northern Cyprus, specializing in cultural programming, peace building, gender and philanthropy (currently involved in fostering cultural and educational programs between Turkey, Cyprus and the Middle East) has agreed to advise on themes, persons and ideas, and to participate.

Outdoor and indoor, site-specific contemporary dance performances will bring internationally acclaimed choreographers from Europe and the Middle East together with professional dancers from Cyprus. Performances will highlight a certain site or the absence of social space in squares or streets. The project is a response to a lack of venues for performance and social interaction in Pafos.

Round-table discussions will be organized and meet-the-artists events will take place, providing community access, interaction and input into the projects. Master classes will be given throughout the production process on a daily basis. During summer the performances will take place outside.

The dance project will foster creativity in teenagers from migrant backgrounds. Specialists will be guiding them through the dance production process, letting them explore their own creative skills and providing insights into contemporary choreography.

Participants will use their ethnicity and diversity as creative materials within an atmosphere of inclusion. Dance pedagogues from Cyprus, Italy, Korea, Slovenja, Finland and Germany will select 20–25 participants from ages 14–20. Participants will be from different cultural backgrounds such as Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, the East-Mediterranean and Africa, Europe, Russia and ethnic minorities on Cyprus.

CommON is a community based project to facilitate co-creativity amongst ethnic communities in Pafos with sustainable results.

It will provide a platform for workshops run by citizens themselves. CommON will also set up a TV and/or Radio Station to promote communication such as dialogue between cultures, immigration, exchange policies etc.

Migration is often associated with physical work, social marginalization and integration.

A series of theatrical plays will highlight the problems of migration.

Professional actors and directors including award winning Pafian director Philippos Philippou will be interpreting provocative plays on this theme. A European playwriting contest addressing multicultural collective memory will also be organized.

This will be a 1 km long installation constructed by young people from across all Cypriot communities, tourists and migrant workers. Shoes washed up on the beach will be hung from rope and documented in photographs and video.

A one-month voyage around Mediterranean islands will begin with three Cypriot actors on board; at each port-of-call more actors will be collected, from auditions held while the ship is docked. Along with the theatrical production, a repertoire of folklore and songs from Mediterranean islands, that has been worked out while the ship is underway, will be presented on various islands before culminating in a performance on the docks at Pafos.

This is a proposal to establish a courtyard for the arts. The courtyard is a traditional architectural feature of Cyprus and often functions as the heart of the home. Court•yART will be built around just such a courtyard and aims to function as the heart of the Open-Air Factory. Court•yART will be a multifaceted, multipurpose artist-in-residence program, international festival and summer school/academy host, a hub for the arts not just in Pafos but also for the whole of Cyprus. It will act as a major meeting point for Cypriot and international artists of all disciplines. It will operate on a daily basis throughout the year, in a restored venue of historical importance.

Court•yART will help to set the stage for the future of contemporary art in the Pafos district. It will be a touchstone for current and future generations and support a multicultural, multidisciplinary exchange between artists and the general public. Court•yART will be a platform for both visiting and local artists and invests in the idea of high quality, environmentally friendly cultural tourism as the future of Pafos and Cyprus in general. It hopes to serve not only as a model of future sustainability but also as a welcoming home to all who visit. It will be a vision of the future that respects the past and the beauty of the natural environment as being central to the quality of life and stimulating creativity.

Geroskipou Municipality has agreed to collaborate with Pafos2017 by hosting this sustainable project and giving a home to Court•yART. Finalized plans are in place to restore a magnificent old farm (Germanina) by creating 30 ensuite rooms, a theatre/concert hall, artists’ studios and a state-of-the-art electronic music studio. The benefits of this location are its relative isolation but also its proximity to key services and a short walking distance to the sea.

Participating artists will be housed for free on the Germanina. All other expenses will be undertaken by the artists, thus supporting the local economy (shops, restaurants, cafés, etc.). Local authorities have demonstrated their strong support. In exchange, key artists will be encouraged to leave their mark on Court•yART and take part in projects there. The premises will have a library that will expand from donations received from visiting artists and both local and international institutions. In addition, visiting visual artists will be commissioned to create sculptures on site or donate artworks to the project. Stages of the Future focuses on what the legacy of the past has left us to transform for the time ahead – not only the next years but a generation or two into the future: the projects deal with the unsolved gap between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, which hinders both to embrace their future and they show ways how to find new ways of mutual trust

and collaboration; they deal with the past developments of tourism and the global destruction of nature for financial profit and how tourism, citizen responsibility and nature protection can open new inspiring ways to benefitting all involved parties; and finally the projects pick up the important theme of art and creative capacity which we will have to develop further if Pafos and Cyprus is to play a cultural role in Europe – not only contributing a heritage but rather making an active contribution to European artistic production.

The Akamas Peninsula, on the western tip of Cyprus, covering 230 km², is the last large unspoiled coastal area remaining on Cyprus. An area of great natural beauty and ecological value, it is home to diverse rare flora and fauna, being one of the few sea-turtle nesting areas in the Mediterranean. There are eight Greek Cypriot villages on Akamas, as well as four Turkish Cypriot settlements, abandoned since 1974. Currently, the biggest threat to the area is tourist development along its coastline.

Pafos 2017 proposes the following plan, in accordance with sustainable development and ecotourism, for the conservation of the area:

1. Establishing a project-related consulting and management committee consisting of scientists, management specialists and community representatives.

2. Creating walking and cycling routes on Akamas to connect communities and places of cultural and environmental interest, but also for sight-seeing by tourists. Pafos 2017 will create stations along the routes for environmental information, maps, picnic areas, water and hygiene facilities.

3. Pafos 2017 will set up Environmental Information Centres at the two “entrances” to the Akamas Peninsula

to raise visitors’ awareness of ecotourism, sustainable development and the area’s biodiversity.

4. The establishment of traditional workshops, interpretation centres

and cultural events will transform Akamas peninsula into a huge

Open Air Factory. Special emphasis will be placed on women’s cooperatives.

5. Pafos 2017 plans various open-air activities to create a good balance between environmental conservation and economic development. It will

be using the conservation expertise of the Plant Micro-Reserve (PMRs)

Network in Cyprus for the Conservation of Priority Species and Habitats. Eco tours and a cycling station will target the environmental education of school children. And Pafos 2017 will make an ambitious effort to include the Akamas peninsula in the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme,

a worldwide network comprising 580 reserves in 114 countries.

6. Eco-Biennale This is an ambitious project aiming to be the hub of economic, social

and cultural development, not only for the local communities but also for Cyprus and the whole of Europe.

Artists working in all disciplines, ranging from painting to new media, from Cyprus, Europe, Middle East

and other countries will be invited to Pafos, to collaborate and produce

works addressing the environment and ecology. A Cypriot and a European

curator will be appointed to oversee the production and exhibition of artworks.

The Carbon and Ecological Footprint of each biennale will be calculated, in order not only to reduce it but also

promote public awareness of energy issues.

7. Akamas Gate, part of the The Gates of Pafos project, will be situated at Lara beach. It will be designed and constructed by artists during the Pafos Eco Biennale in 2015.

8. Pafos 2017 will promote the Akamas area’s participation in the European Geoparks Network to conserve geological heritage and advance sustainable economic development.

The events of 1974 led Turkish Cypriots to abandon their homes in Mouttalos and relocate to the North of the island. Their deserted homes were subsequently re-inhabited by thousands of Greek Cypriot refugees, where to this day, they continue to live in “temporary” conditions. Neglected and run down, Mouttalos remains charged with the memories of the Turkish Cypriots who lived there for decades. Likewise, the current Greek Cypriot refugees struggle to retain their own identity. The cultural heritage of Mouttalos includes a number of khans, where caravans used to stay overnight, when trading and cultural exchanges would take place in inner courtyards. Pafos 2017 with the support of the Department of Antiquities, will fully restore the Ibrahim Khan to its original appearance. In a bold initiative Turkish Cypriot craftsmen will be invited from the northern part of the island to collaborate on a joint restoration process. “Open Khan” Resources and Facilities:1. Open Library: A library with a permanent collection as well as

theme-based visiting collections, borrowed from international universities, libraries and cultural foundations.

2. Open Studio: A multi-purpose space

that can host bi-communal music events, film screenings, lectures, readings, art and folklore exhibitions,

as well as a permanent photo exhibition depicting everyday life in Mouttalos prior to 1974.

3. Open Workshop: A fully equipped

workshop space that can host classes in the traditional arts and crafts of Pafos

led by both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot expert craftsmen.

4. Open Living Library: Bi-communal

story-telling workshops where the oldest members of both communities will narrate stories for the youngest,

like “human books”.

5. Open Theatre: An open-air theatre in collaboration with the “International Theatre of the Oppressed Organization”, led by experienced performers, with contributions by the audience actively encouraged.

6. Open Playground: A playgound which

will allow younger children from both communities to meet and to get

to know one another through traditional games.

7. Open Kitchen: A restaurant serving

traditional Cypriot cuisine, a fusion of Turkish and Greek cuisines which has evolved through the centuries.

8. Open Inn: Offering a small number of guest rooms free of charge to visiting artists, speakers, researchers and Turkish-Cypriots engaging in story-telling etc.

9. The Table of Unification: In 2011 Anthony Heywood and Uwe Derksen constructed Tabula – Fortis

in Pace (Peace Table) in Dover, using timber reclaimed from recently

demolished local buildings. They will again be collaborating on Table of Unification, together with two emerging Cypriot artists, locals and especially welcoming contributions from the migrant community.

The table will be constructed with timber retrieved from deserted buildings, such as houses abandoned since 1974, as well as material collected from neighbouring countries (Middle East, Greece, Turkey). The artists will work in an “open-workshop”, where visitors will be encouraged to actively participate.

The Table of Unification will retain its cultural and social value as a table, but also provide a meeting point for cultural dialogue, for informal discussions and also organized events such as culinary festivals, poetry competitions, book exhibitions, theatrical performances and symposiums. It will also incorporate a container where visitors may leave objects and messages.

Installed in an open-courtyard within the “Open Khan” facilities, the Table of Unification will be an integral part of everyday life in Pafos for many years to come.

Following the 1974 division of the island, the Turkish ‘authorities’ in northern Cyprus appointed officials to record possessions that had been left behind by fleeing Greek Cypriots. Baki Bogac was appointed as the Turkish official to carry out the inventory in Varoshia. This in itself was an odd quirk of fate, because Baki himself was not only an architect, but also a talented artist and sculptor, something his superiors were unaware of. With an escort of soldiers he started going from house to house, until he reached the old studio of Andy Adamos.

Many practical items like chairs, cupboards, tools, and household items had already been looted, but sculptures, paintings and photographs had been left behind. Baki immediately realized this was an important find, and wanted to ensure that the contents of the studio were secured from both further looting and other damage.

The escort of soldiers refused his request to remove items from the studio for safekeeping, but Baki was not deterred. Secretly, he returned many times surreptitiously removing pieces of art.

Baki stored all the items he took at home, sketches were framed under glass, papers were stored in a cool dark place along with sculptures, litho plates and sketch books, ready to be returned to their rightful owner when and if the political situation changed.

It was at the Brushworks Across Cultures exhibition in 1990 that Baki told his story to a member of the American Bureau of Cultural Affairs. They agreed that the work should be returned to the artist, but political sensitivities made it dangerous for Baki to make his involvement public.

Then in 1993 the great day dawned, the artworks which had been kept in Baki’s care for nineteen years, were finally delivered to Pafos. Tragically, Andy had died in 1990 aged only 54, but his family gave Baki a piece of work of his choice in gratitude for his service to Andy’s art. The two families remain very close friends.

A dual exhibition of both artists will demonstrate that art has no borders and that there are both Turkish and Greek Cypriots who can rise above hatred and take huge risks for each other.

The Trojan Women by Euripides was presented for the first time in the Great Dionysia in 415 BC and describes the lament of the women of Troy after the fall of their city, just before they were dragged off into captivity. This is an anti-war tragedy in which Euripides pointedly criticizes the victors because of crimes committed during the war, their arrogance and brutality, and he masterfully describes the tragic fate, humiliation and misery of the defeated. During the play, we experience the hostilities from the perspective of civilian victims, who are cynically relegated to so-called “collateral damage” in modern warfare. The women of Troy are standing on the theatre stage, in a place of devastation and desolation, mourning their losses and facing a bleak future exceeding all their worst fears.

The message of the Trojan Women is universal and remains timeless. From the Trojan War until today, the sufferings of war and refugees have persisted across all geographic boundaries. People are still living in division, in isolation and in hostility towards one another, a situation worsened, then as now, by the powerful pursuing their own interests. Many countries that have been divided and people who have lost their homes and livelihoods (Cyprus, Lebanon, Palestine, Korea, Ireland, etc.) live a nightmarish existence, disallowed to co-exist in a spirit of tolerance and peace.

In Cyprus, thousands of people were violently forced to abandon their homes and Nicosia remains, until today, a divided capital. Despite its recent tragic history, Cyprus maintains its status as a crossroads of cultures that promotes multiculturalism. It is therefore appropriate that a contemporary production of the Trojan Women, with a multi-ethnic chorus, its members recruited from divided or recently reunited countries, should be highlighting the brotherhood of nations, through the common drama of the performers’ own oppression.

The Walls of Shame highlights not only the tragedy of contemporary warfare, dressed in the guise of economic conflict, but also the collective responsibility of the international instigators who remain impassive to the perils of division. Internationally acclaimed stage director Theodoros Terzopoulos and installation artist Yannis Kounellis have already committed to this production.

Additionally, the possibility of a parallel Walls of Shame conference is currently being explored in collaboration with the Delphi European Cultural Centre, which will bring together leading intellectuals and academics from divided or recently reunited countries in order to discuss the cultural, social and economic impact of post-war division. The venue envisaged for the conference is the Home for Cooperation located in the Dead Zone on Nicosia’s Green Line.

This proposal, two performances by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, the world’s leading percussion ensemble, will be one of the most high profile events of the year. The first work, Grisey’s Le Noir de l’Etoile, is inspired by and performed under the night sky. The second is a new work commissioned from Pafos-born composer Evis Sammoutis, who has worked closely with the group before. It is inspired by and involves green transportation. Sammoutis’ works have been commissioned by such world-renowned organizations as Venice Biennale, Klangspuren, Royaumont and ARD, and performed in over 35 countries by the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Woodwind Quintet and the Ensemble Modern amongst others.The first concert will feature Les Percussions de Strasbourg performing Le Noir de l’Etoile, a composition Grisey

composed for and dedicated to the group. The work is for six percussionists positioned around the audience on high platforms. One of the composer’s most iconic works, it was inspired by the discovery of signals emitted by the Vela pulsar. Grisey appropriated sounds generated by the stars and created one of the 20th Century’s most original works of music, an unparalleled audiovisual spectacle that includes the residue from the explosion of a supernova 12,000 years ago.

The Evis Sammoutis concert is for six percussionists using custom-made bicycles as instruments, additionally 100 local cyclists and skateboarders will be used to trigger electronic sounds and images. A specially made bicycle track with sensors will be installed for this purpose.

This is a proposal for a cultural management course, an opportunity for young highly motivated artists from “Sønderborg 2017” and “Pafos 2017” to become leaders in arts and cultural organizations; trainees will undertake their work experience in each other’s countries and at major European cultural institutions.

The Pafos program will run from 2013 to 2016, with six participants annually, specializing in the areas of music, dance, theatre and visual art. Combining theory and practice, it will encompass policy, programming, marketing, fundraising, financial management, legal and other issues.

An exhibition of the birth of science and technology in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, in the 6th Century BC, their development during antiquity, renewal during the rise of Islam and advancement in the 15th and 16th Centuries in Western Europe.

Cyprus still has an abundance of images from a traumatic war. Local artists and ones from other areas of conflict will be invited to Pafos for a month, to exchange ideas and create artworks. The emphasis will be on interdisciplinary, interactive installations involving new media.

The 1974 war remains indelibly etched in Cypriot memory. Both communities will be invited to narrate their own legends in spoken word and song, with results emphasizing what unites rather than divides humanity.

The Pafos Aphrodite Opera Festival will be upgraded to create its first ever new production. The open-air performance of Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio will bring together leading Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot singers and actors, with ones from Greece and Turkey. Additionally master–classes will provide coaching for young opera singers from Cyprus and across Europe.

Do our enemies sing? How do they lull their children to sleep? How do they grieve for their loved ones? What happens if we sing their songs?

This is a professional theatre project in three parts. The first will encompass ethnographic research, recordings

of the Turkish language and songs and sessions with Turkish and Turkish Cypriots musicians.

The second is a collaboration with “Wroclaw 2016”. The Cypriot team will meet Teatr ZAR and with the help of musicians will produce songs and music.

The third part, the theatre production, is the culmination of the project. This will be presented in both Pafos and Wroclaw.

The District Officer’s Residence is a city landmark building from the 1920’s whose renovation was completed in 2011 and currently houses the Pafos 2017 Office (it is designated as the ECoC 2017 headquarters, if Pafos’ bid is met with success). At the other end of the site lies the Pafos District Archaeological Museum; the Cyprus Department of Antiquities has planned its renovation and expansion, in order to enhance its indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces. Between the two, the Pafos Municipal Theatre will fill in a major gap in the city’s cultural infrastructure. The new complex will comprise a 550-seat Theatre and Concert Hall and an alternative stage for smaller audiences and experimental performances. The three buildings will form a coherent cultural complex, complementing one another and hosting a variety of events. The complex is expected to function on multiple levels:- as a bearer of culture in everyday life,

easily accessible to visitors and locals alike, as a meeting point or a welcoming park at any time of the day

- as a tool for urban regeneration, injecting new uses throughout the day in an area that has been left neglected for a long time

- as a symbol of the city’s love for culture, standing at the entrance to the city centre and at one end of the planned “cultural boulevard” that will lead to the city’s heart (City Hall square and “Pazari”) and terminate in Mouttalos. This “cultural boulevard” will re-trace the historic promenade of Pafos, breathing new life into a forgotten tradition.

The Cultural Complex of the Pafos District Archaeological Museum, the Pafos Municipal Theatre, and the District Officer’s Residence

The recently renovated building of the Old Powerhouse operates as a Municipal cultural centre that supports various cultural events for the city (indoor and outdoor exhibitions, seminars, discussions, recitals and small concerts, literature readings and parties). Right in the heart of the city, it is a reference point for the city’s artistic forces and a resting spot for all residents and tourists; this is also due to its enclosed tranquil courtyard with its fountain and sculpture garden. Separated from Palia Ilektriki by a mere wall, the former “Attikon” and currently “Othello” cinema is a historic city landmark. Its restoration and reuse as a cinema complex will provide the city with much-needed spaces for film screenings, and, as a Turkish-Cypriot property, it will demonstrate the city’s will to heal past wounds. The renovation project will result in a 220-seat indoor cinema and a 250-seat outdoor summer cinema, a small gallery space and a café. The complex will also be connected to the Palaia Ilektriki Cultural Centre via its sculpture garden, creating another cultural nucleus in the heart of the old city. All interventions in Ktima are expected to boost the area’s cultural dynamic and invite further private initiative for the transformation of this central, yet neglected zone into a vibrant hub.

Palaia Ilektriki Cultural Centre and “Othello” Cinema

Pafos has always been a destination; for traders and craftsmen in the past and for tourists today. The Ibrahim Khan is the most important caravan serai in Pafos, dating from before WWI and used as a hostel until the ‘70’s. Placed at a central location in Ktima, the Khan was also home to craftsmen and manufacturers catering to both citizens and visitors from the countryside and was a place of fizzing social life. Today it stands lonely and derelict, a vague memory hidden from view. Pafos2017 plans to restore it to its former glory, with the help of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, and make it one of the main ECoC venues, an icon of the city’s architectural, historic, economic and multi-cultural legacy. The restoration will be a joint project involving Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot experts and craftsmen, as a literal and symbolic gesture of cooperation and as an offer to the numerous communities of the contemporary city. The Khan’s main courtyard will host the Table of Unification (see Stages of the Future), as well as other events that involve bi- and multi-communal collaborations. The smaller interconnected courtyard will become a playground for children of all ages. Its interior spaces will house artists’ workshops and studios, exhibition spaces

and an open kitchen serving traditional Cypriot and other ethnic dishes. A library is also part of the project, with a collection on local history, architecture, traditions, and cultural, social and economic issues. Another space will be devoted to story-telling; a “living library” that brings together all generations and all communities to share stories of tolerance, mutual understanding and hope. The first floor area will once again

accommodate visitors, but of a particular kind: cultural travellers, artists and craftsmen participating in interdisciplinary, intercultural and international events. The Khan’s current tenants (a traditional chair maker, a carpenter, a tailor, a traditional bakery and a coffee shop) are invited to stay in the complex, attracting everyday people and adding yet another layer to the complex character of the Khan.

Network of open spaces in Mouttalos (Namik Kemal Street & Mouttalos Cliffs)

Archbishop Makarios’ Avenue is the main thoroughfare and commercial street in Ktima, running from Kennedy Square to the beginning of Mouttalos, and is widely known as “Pazari” (Bazaar), which indicates the area’s historic character as a trading district. The Municipality has developed a project that involves widening and remodelling Kennedy Square (the entrance to the city when coming from Kato Pafos) and pedestrianizing the avenue and its surrounding streets. The scheme is studied as a continuation of the “cultural boulevard” and the Griva Digeni Avenue remodelling. These plans will create a magnificent civic centre in Pafos, as they link Kennedy Square to the Palaia Ilektriki Cultural Centre and the Othello cinema complex and to Mouttalos, and they shape a coherent pedestrian and commercial urban zone, re-inviting people in an area that needs regeneration. Kennedy Square itself will become a landscaped open-air public space with ample space for outdoor events.

Currently the only indoor theatre in Pafos, the Markideion Theatre is planned to undergo extensive renovations that include its main 325-seat auditorium, its waiting and backstage spaces, as well as the building shell, in order to improve acoustic and visual capacities and comfort. Part of the project is the reuse of its outdoor cinema that will add a 230-seat screening area to the city’s cultural infrastructure.

Kennedy Square and “Pazari”

The Markideion Theatre

This road, formerly the entrance to the city, runs in front of the “District Officer’s Residence”, the Archaeological Museum, along some of the most beautiful grand residences, historic school complexes and the stadium of Pafos, and connects the neoclassical complex of the Town Hall and Library, Efseveia Men’s Club, the Municipal Garden and Eros’ Square with Kennedy Square. Its upgrade and landscaping will re-instate its function as the spine in a coherent urban body of architecturally, historically and civically important buildings and open spaces and revive the traditional city promenade as a “cultural boulevard”. The landscaping of the area around the Municipal Garden will once again attract activities in and about the Garden, and re-locate the heart of the city to its rightful place.

Mouttalos is the historic Turkish-Cypriot neighbourhood of Pafos, emptied and re-populated with Greek-Cypriot refugees after the 1974 events. It is thus filled with a unique mix of memories: those of residents long gone, those of homes long lost and those of a long struggle to re-build a community and a future. And yet Mouttalos is also a place where hope is inscribed on every neglected garden and unkempt house; hope that one day borders are lifted and all displaced people can return home. The space of Mouttalos is one of Pafos’ forgotten treasures. The Municipality wants to invite people back to Mouttalos, regenerating the area for its current and future residents, through two major projects. The Namik Kemal Street project will transform this central street into a pedestrian path that links Aghia Sofia Mosque with Inonou Square and includes an open-air amphitheatre and the reuse of residences and shops as delis,

cafés, restaurants, ateliers, gallery spaces and artists’ workshops as well as the creation of smaller informal gathering spaces along the main pedestrian route. The mosque itself will be restored and re-opened to the public as a reminder of the long multi-cultural history of Pafos. The Mouttalos cliffs and Viklari Park project is a landscape scheme that utilizes the peculiar topography of the area (steep cliffs and caves) as an urban park with multiple leisure and cultural opportunities. Part of the intervention is the installation of wooden observation towers -outdoor rooms- along the ridgeline of Mouttalos that will house workshops and art installations. These two projects combined aim to set up a network of open spaces that, like urban oases, will instigate further development without destroying the intimate character of the area.

Pafian Culture has a strong connection with the sea, manifested in its plentiful ancient myths, folklore legends and everyday stories of our people; our lives transpire in and around water…The Municipalities of Pafos and Geroskipou and their immediate communities are embarking on a major landscape project in order to extend Pafos’ newly refurbished waterfront pedestrian promenade (10km) an additional 8 km NW towards Kissonerga and another 10km SE towards Kouklia.After its completion, our district will boast the longest waterfront pedestrian route in Cyprus, featuring all kinds of landscapes, from the castle square and archaeological parks, the urban waterfront esplanade and its performance piers to sandy beaches and

rugged shorelines, sea caves and breath-taking cliffs, river deltas and campsites, fauna, flora and marine habitats designated as NATURA 2000 sites.

Apart from showcasing the Pafian way of life by the sea, the project will also control and push further inland seaside tourist development in areas that are yet to be explored. For many years Pafos has turned its back to the sea, with a wall of waterfront hotels in the already developed parts of Kato Pafos. As symbolic gestures of breaking through the hotel wall and reclaiming connections with the sea, the city will moor a series of barges at strategic points and specific nestled squares along the waterfront, in order to create floating piers. Nicknamed “Pafoones” and embellished with temporary performance spaces, these decks will supplement the city’s arsenal of spaces for culture in an unexpected and sustainable way. Lined side by side, the “Pafoones” can create a quay and a bridge; whilst grouped together, they form a large enough congregational space. In any type of formation, these floating decks increase awareness of the sea environment with the minimal environmental impact; bring people closer to the sea; create flexible and adaptable venues for a huge variety of cultural events; and literally establish the strongest connection with the sea by allowing people to either walk ‘on’ the sea, or watch from the shoreline events enacted ‘on’ the sea. The first “Pafoona” will be anchored next to the remnants of the ancient breakwater in Pafos’ harbour; with a stage, screens and removable seating it will function as a dock for small vessels carrying cultural activities and as one of the Gates of Pafos (The Arethousa Gate).

In a fast growing city, it is essential to create green pedestrianized connections and integrate a series of open spaces, now neglected and unused, into a network of landscaped public spaces within the residential neighbourhoods of Pafos. Such an intervention presents tremendous cultural benefits for the people as it reclaims public space and in it, reviving the age-old habit of evening promenading, socializing and experiencing cultural events outdoors. In its initial phase, it will provide spaces for the artistic projects of the ECoC 2017; and later on, it will continue to bring culture “right at the citizens’ front doors”. The project has further urban and environmental aspirations, as it establishes links and hubs of activity that not only unite the severed parts of the city, but also creates “green lungs” to alleviate congestion and pollution, and mitigate climatic conditions to create comfortable living environments for its

inhabitants. Initial planning has begun for a specific area that will function as a pilot project for the entire city. The project develops the remodelling of public spaces as neighbourhood parks and playgrounds and clearly-marked pedestrian and bicycle routes that connect them. Different design strategies can be applied to the multiple green areas, such as structures made from recycled and reclaimed materials versus the conventional means of construction; or these areas can showcase different themes, like ecology and biodiversity, botanical gardens and horticulture, arts and culture, and even sports and athleticism. The project overall aims at an urban, environmental, social and cultural renewal instigated and nurtured at spaces of co-existence, cross-cultural understanding and tolerance, thus advocating the true values of multiculturalism in a city that is in dire need of such a direction.

Pafos grew around the harbour in Hellenistic times, but was later deserted in favour of the safety provided by the hill settlement (Ktima). Meanwhile it had blossomed into a rich port city, complete with an Agora, an Asklepeion, baths and amphitheatres and full of outstanding Hellenistic villas. Kato Pafos grew around this site, leaving it mostly intact, but for Apostolou Pavlou Avenue which, in the 1960’s, penetrated the boundaries of the walled city in order to link Kato Pafos and Ktima, ignoring the ancient road and gate of the city. As a result, Fabrika Hill to the east was cut off and its foothill was released for development.

The Ancient Gate project proposes more than its name suggests; it is not only a Gate reminiscent of the ancient one that marks the entrance to Nea Pafos. It also encompasses a pedestrian bridge over Apostolou Pavlou Avenue, restoring the continuity of the historic city and also functioning as an eco-corridor between two interlinked natural reserves (the archaeological area of Nea Pafos is both a significant archaeological site listed in the UNESCO World Heritage charter and

an important natural reserve included in the NATURA 2000 network). Part of the project is an extensive system of foot- and bicycle paths that follow the street grid of the ancient city, undulating and developing along with the archaeological research, in order to link the sights and the on-going excavations. An international architecture competition will provide a detailed master plan for the intervention.

The Square of Religions is part of the master plan brief; it is to be located at the foot of Fabrica Hill, where the ancient city meets the remnants of the fishing village and all intermediate periods. Linear in shape, it will unite Christian churches with a mosque, Roman and Ottoman Baths, underground worship sites and the footsteps of Paul the Apostle, and will link them with the partly pedestrianized Agiou Antoniou street, which is also in need of revitalisation. As a coherent gesture, the entire project will re-define the present and future character of Kato Pafos as a site.

The Municipality of Geroskipou, in collaboration with Pafos2017, will reuse the Farm of Germanina (a historic agricultural establishment) as an artists’ colony: the traditional buildings of the complex, surrounding a large courtyard, will be restored, and, together with new constructions, will house accommodation facilities for resident and visiting artists (30 en suite rooms), a theatre / concert hall, artists’ studios and workshops, and a state-of-the-art

electronic music studio. Plans also include the large courtyard that can host open forums, exhibitions and performances. The location of the Farm, in an area that is naturally beautiful, relatively isolated but close to the touristic waterfront area, makes it possible to complement the project with the facilities of existing hotels, and also to effortlessly involve Pafos’ visitors to its cultural programme.

The old Silk-Weaving Factory was built in 1925 by a British Company and was one of the biggest industries of its time nationwide. It was the silk factory’s economic prosperity and growing production demands that accelerated the electrification of the cities Geroskipou and Pafos. The surrounding rural communities thrived as well by providing the breeding grounds for silkworms (mulberry and sycamore trees). After its closing down in the late 1960’s, the building was rented to the Cypriot Army to be used as a dining hall and army barracks and now it stands resolute in its abandonment and neglect. In an effort to preserve the last remaining specimen of industrial architecture in the District of Pafos, the Silk Factory will be restored to its former glory and be used as an exhibition and performance space. It will become another example of transforming derelict large-scale architectural jewels into beacons of culture.

Projects in Polis Chrysochous include the upgrading of the existing coastal campsite as a sustainable and easily accessible area that can accommodate both visitors and cultural events, the remodelling of the town’s central square as a contemporary urban plaza, and the construction of a new open-air amphitheatre in conjunction with the restoration of the historic Town Hall. Similar to the waterfront promenade in Pafos, a footpath will run from the Latchi marina to the Polis Chrysochous Camping site, extended inland to the new amphitheatre and Polis’ main square. The project will be a beneficial addition to the current projects for the city’s waterfront development, and greatly contributes to the entire city’s regeneration efforts to become an “Accessible For All City”, providing access to beaches, cultural establishments, entertainment facilities, public and private buildings for people with mobility impairments and other disabilities.

The primary aim of the Akamas Project is to protect and manage the natural environment of the Akamas Peninsula, the overall area of numerous sites listed in the European NATURA 2000 Network. The main concept is to maintain the existing nature trails and cycling routes, while creating new links between them in order to form a coherent network. Information and educational kiosks, cycling stations, refreshment sites and emergency services will be positioned at strategic locations marking the most important junctions of the network. Resting spots, lookouts and viewpoints will be added along the scenic routes. Areas for parking and camping sites will be designated at specific locations in order to control human intervention onto the natural landscape. The idea is to clearly mark the routes, offer the required amenities, educate the public on issues regarding ecology, nature conservation and natural habitats, but perform these tasks with the outmost respect and the minimum disturbance to these specially protected nature areas.

Another aim is to revitalize the numerous communities situated on the fringes of the Akamas region by transforming spaces and creating places that enhance the numerous socio-economic and cultural characteristics and trends of the region. Two new Environmental Information Centres with cycling stations and supporting amenities in Neo Chorio and Agios Georgios, will mark the two main entrances to the Akamas Peninsula Nature Reserve. Small-scale museums, gallery exhibition spaces and workshops can be housed in restored traditional farm houses, each displaying the strongest art & crafts, trades and agricultural processes of each village. In mixed villages, half-ruined houses can be restored as centres for bi-communal exchange and cultural activities. The Akamas Project can strengthen and enrich agrotourism in the region in combination with ecotourism, accessibility provisions and extreme sports tourism infrastructure. The Akamas Project will act as a prototype programme that can be adapted to other similar areas in the Pafos district, in Cyprus and Europe.
