PAC-12 FOOTBALLCHAMPIONSHIP GAME

UCLA 14 0 10 0 24 STANFORD 7 10 0 10 27

Stanford weathered steady rain showers and a 194-yard rushing effort from UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin and edged the Bruins 27-24 in the Pac-12 Football Championship Game. The Cardinal outlasted the Bruins for the

second time in as many weeks and claimed its !rst Conference title since 1999. 31,622 fans turned out for the contest, which featured the Pac-12 North and South division-winners.

Stanford Quarterback Kevin Hogan completed 16-of-22 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown and added 47 yards and a touchdown on the ground en route to earning the game’s most valuable player award. Stepfan Taylor, who established a new school career rushing record late in the second quarter, paced the Cardinal with 133 all-purpose yards (78 rushing, 55 receiving).

UCLA started off strong, moving the ball consistently on its opening drive, which covered 85 yards in eight plays and culminated with a 51-yard touchdown scamper by Franklin. The run marked the longest-play from scrimmage in the brief two-year history of the Pac-12 Championship game.

Stanford answered on its !rst possession, marching 69 yards in 11 plays and capping the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Hogan that knotted the game at 7-7. UCLA took to the ground on its ensuing possession, stringing together runs of 48 and 19 yards to set up a !ve-yard touchdown scamper by quarterback Brett Hundley that put the Bruins back in front, 14-7.

Early in the second quarter, with the Bruins driving once again, Stanford safety Ed Reynolds inter-cepted a Hundley pass and returned it 80-yards to the UCLA one-yard line. Running back Stepfan Taylor found the endzone on the next play to tie the game, 14-14, and Stanford kicker Jordan Wil-liamson rounded out the !rst-half scoring with a 37 yard !eld goal as time expired to give the Cardinal a 17-14 lead at the break.

UCLA held Stanford on its opening possession of the second half and drew even with a 31-yard !eld goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn. After forcing another Stanford punt, Hundley led the Bruins on a 12-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a 20-yard touchdown run by Franklin that gave UCLA a 24-17 advan-tage.

The Cardinal countered on its next offensive series, driving 63-yards in 10 plays to set up a 26-yard touchdown strike from Hogan to wide receiver Drew Terrell on 3rd-and-15. After a holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff pinned UCLA at it’s own eight-yard line, the Bruins marched into Stanford ter-ritory before being forced to punt. The Cardinal regained the lead with 6:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, as Williamson connected on a 36-yard !eld goal attempt. UCLA had a chance to tie the game in the !nal minute, but Fairbairn’s 52-yard attempt came up just short, sealing the win for the Cardinal, 27-24.

PAC-12 BOWL ARRANGEMENTS - 2012-13

The Pac-12 is in the third year of a four-year bowl cycle. The Pac-12 Conference has agreements with seven bowl partners. The lineup is led by the Rose Bowl presented by Vizio, which is the destination for the Pac-12 champion, unless said champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the !nal Bowl Championship Series rankings. If that were the case, the Pac-12 champion would play in the BCS National Championship Game hosted by the Discover Orange Bowl. Regardless of the disposition of the Pac-12 champion, a second Pac-12 team may be selected for an at-large berth in the Bowl Championship Series in any given year and other Pac-12 bowl partner arrangements provide for that occurrence. In addition to the Rose Bowl presented by Vizio, Pac-12 bowl partners include, in order of selection, the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Bridgeport Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco, and the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque. Following is a summary of the Pac-12 bowl arrangements for the 2012-13 season:
