As each year passes, I am continually reminded of our CAL-PT-PAC donors’ firm commitments and generosity. We are able to develop and maintain key legislative relationships because of your support. In this, our second annual report, you will see how your ernst contributions were put to work.

CAL-PT-PACChair’s Message

2018 was a big year legislatively as the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA) sponsored and supported several bills that encompassed a variety of important issues. At the same time, CPTA successfully prevented athletic trainers from achieving licensure with a scope of practice that would have extended well beyond their didactic preparation and training. This feat alone required countless hours of advocacy with key members of the Business and Professions Committees in both the Assembly and Senate. It’s times like these that we were well positioned as your contributions allowed us to build and maintain key relationships with legislators who shared CPTA’s philosophy and concerns.

2018 also was an election year. I am pleased to report that nearly 90 percent of the candidates who ran for office and were supported by the CAL-PT-PAC through campaign contributions, won their respective races.

Furthermore, your PAC contributions enabled us to continue providing high-quality programming and ethics continuing education at no cost to our members. Donor funds also provided an opportunity for constituent members and CPTA leadership to attend numerous fundraisers and events in Sacramento and throughout our Golden State while representing our profession’s interests.

The intrinsic value of constituent members supporting and engaging with their elected representatives cannot be overstated. Due to this support and these relationships, which are developed over time, CPTA and the profession remain credible in Sacramento.

The CAL-PT-PAC also has been extremely fortunate to have involvement from bright and enthusiastic student Trustees year in and year out. 2018 was no different, as we saw a tremendous swell in Student Cub donors largely attributed to our student Trustee, Mr. An Luong, SPT. The CAL-PT-PAC recognizes that the key to our profession’s future is engaging and mentoring our student advocates.

Your CAL-PT-PAC Trustees are always excited to share our collective accomplishments with such a passionate group of professionals. Your commitment to profession advocacy allows us the platform to work hard on your behalf.

Once again, please enjoy our annual CAL-PT-PAC report and highlighting our exciting successes. Our achievements were made possible through the abundant generosity of our individual donors, Districts and Special Interest Groups, Advocacy Chairpersons, and sponsors. ABOUTCAL-PT-PACThe CAL-PT-PAC is the only political action committee in California representing the profession of physical therapy.

Mission Statement – To raise money for the purpose of supporting candidates and incumbents running for positions within the California State Legislature, local offices and statewide agencies whose views support physical therapy issues. To establish, cultivate, and strengthen relationships with health policy makers. To educate, empower, and facilitate active grassroots activity within the CPTA membership.

Vision Statement – To create a sustaining political action fund that champions health policy issues and a network of statewide leaders.

CAL-PT-PAC GoalsSince its inception, the California Physical Therapy Association’s (CPTA) political accounts have been modestly funded when compared to similarly sized associations. As CPTA strives to be “the authoritative advocates for all matters pertaining to physical therapy and its leaders,” CPTA must continue to strategically position itself to become more politically influential. CPTA members can help by electing to make a contribution to CPTA’s PAC. This enables the CAL-PT-PAC to become more robust and politically powerful. Having a political action fund is important for CPTA members for a multitude of reasons. The foremost being that the voices of California PTs, PTAs and PT/PTA students have an avenue that leads directly to the state Legislature. CPTA’s PAC when used in coordination with policy advocacy, can be extremely effective. In a political atmosphere where

the squeakiest wheel gets the grease, the strategic use of PAC dollars can be an effective way of getting your voice heard.

The CAL-PT-PAC Strategic Goals support this mission and vision:

n Establish contribution levels for all leadership roles within CPTA’s structure

n Establish District goals

n Coordinate with each District/Special Interest Group in providing tools to effectively meet their respective fundraising goals

n Ensure compliance with FPPC Guidelines

n Develop an effective contributors’ recognition program to the CAL-PT-PAC at all CPTA events

n Increased the percentage of dollars raised toward the annual CAL-PT-PAC Student Cub Challenge Goal by 500 percent!

n 61% of CPTA Leadership participated in the CAL-PT-PAC Leadership Challenge
