The committee reviewed the latest developments in the legislation for achieving the sustainable development goals and mechanisms of developing the work of the justice system. The committee also listened to a briefing on the latest developments in dealing with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Bahrain, HRH Prince Salman said, is committed to the prin-ciples of good neighbourliness and maintaining solid relations with friendly nations and the international community in a way that back the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

His Royal Highness was inter-acting with the five newly ap-pointed ambassadors of Bahrain

to China, Indonesia, Thailand, France and Brazil at the Riffa Palace. The newly appointed ambassador are Dr Muham-mad Ghassan Sheikho (China), Ahmed Abdulla Alhajeri (In-donesia), Muna Abbas Radhi (Thailand), Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa (France), and Badr Abbas Al Helaibi (Brazil).

Prince Salman congratulated them and wished them all suc-cess in performing their duties.

His Royal Highness also com-mended the efforts of Bahrain’s ambassadors to strengthen bi-lateral relations with various countries.

Prince Salman also praised the integral role played by Bah-

rain’s diplomatic missions to en-hance the Kingdom’s credentials across various international and regional forums.

For their part, the new ambas-sadors expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to meet His Royal Highness and their appre-ciation of His Royal Highness’s commitment to supporting the

Kingdom’s foreign policy.The ambassadors pledged to

Bahrain is the first Arab country to implement an integrated curriculum to

promote innovation and entre-preneurship, said a top United Nations Industrial Development Organization official.

Dr Hashem Hussein, the Head of the United Nations Industri-al Development Organisation for Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Bahrain, said the organisation would co-ordinate with the League of the Arab States and the Union of Arab Chambers to implement this approach in other Arab nations.

“Promoting a culture of in-novation and entrepreneurship through education is one of the most important priorities for countries, and that is what Bah-rain is keen to implement,” he added.

UNIDO, he said, is document-ing this experience of Bahrain in partnership with the United Nations.

“Fifty-three countries around the globe are now following

Bahrain Model for Entrepre-neurship and Innovation and the

Enterprise Development and In-vestment Promotion Programme

for its quality,” he added. “The success of these pro-

grammes also encouraged the organisation to establish busi-ness incubators in schools dur-ing next year with a focus on artificial intelligence, especial-ly in technical and vocational schools.”

Dr Hussein was at the virtual closing ceremony of the third edition of the initiative to pro-mote innovation and entrepre-

neurship to achieve Sustainable Development Goals for second-ary school students.

He praised its strategic part-nership with the Ministry of Education for the competition, despite the pandemic.

He said the organisation held an intensive programme to train 450 teaches during the past years to enrich the programme with outstanding initiatives and programmes.

Bahrain keen to develop curricula: Dr Al Nuami TDT | Manama

Dr Majid Al Nuaimi, the Minister of Education,

said the Kingdom is keen to de-veloping curricula with topics, including entrepreneurship, innovation and artificial intel-ligence, “as these are the basic building blocks our students need to engage in public life and build a knowledge-driven society.”

Thanks to the leadership of Bahrain, Dr Al Nuaimi said the Kingdom is moving ahead with plans to help students learn the skills needed for this century and build capabilities to pro-duce creative ideas and achieve sustainable development goals through entrepreneurship and innovation.

The minister was peaking during the virtual closing cer-emony of the third edition of the Initiative to Promote Inno-vation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development Goals for High Schools.

The event, held under the patronage of Dr Majid Al Nuai-

mi, the Minister of Education, was in cooperation with the Investment and Technology Promotion Office of the United Nations Industrial Develop-ment Organization.

1,836 students, 41 schools took part

The competition, the min-ister said, attracted enormous attention with the participa-tion of 1,360 boys and 476 girl students.

Forty-five of the students were from private schools, where total participation of schools stood at 41. Three of the schools were from the private sector, and nine were from the vocation education sector.

Out of the 85 projects re-ceived, 30 were from the schools qualified to participate in the competition.

The top five winners will go to Dubai ExpoTDT | Manama

The schools that grabbed the top five places in the

competition held to promote Innovation and Entrepreneur-ship will take their project to the Dubai World Expo and the Arab Innovation Rally, in which 21 Arab countries participate.

Isa Town Secondary School for Boys won first place for its project “Bahrain Tender”, a website designed for pre-

senting projects for individu-al and small enterprises and submitting bids and offers for competing for tenders.

Al Wafa Secondary School for girls took second place for their Smart Hygiene project, a bracelet that vibrates upon detecting a high percentage of germs on the hand.

The third place went to Jidhafs Secondary Industrial School for Boys for their project on Waste-water Treatment and Recycling

for Use, which aims to save wasted water.

Umaima Bint Al-Numan Sec-ondary School for Girls took the fourth sport for their “Green Refinery” project, which re-volves around placing a ma-chine in seawater that draws pollutants from the water.

Al Ebdaa Private School won fifth place for their project ‘Re-life’ to recycle used and worn clothes to make new clothes and bags.

Distributing shabu, Court confirms 5-year jail term for Bahraini womanTDT | Manama

Top Bahraini court rejected an appeal challenging a five-

year jail term and a BD3,000 fine awarded to a Bahraini woman for peddling banned drugs in the Kingdom.

The Cassation Court, Bah-rain’s highest court, issued the verdict in the appeal filed by a 48-year-old woman.

Court files say the woman is guilty of delivering drugs known as shabu to a Pakistan-based man.

Cops arrested the woman, who claimed to be an entrepre-neur, with 100 grams of shabu in her possession.

Investigation revealed that the drug was for distribution all around the Kingdom.

The woman landed in po-lice custody after authorities kick-started an investigation into a tip-off received.

Police, after identifying her, also secured a search warrant for the apartment the woman was staying.

During the search, police also managed to confiscate shabu from there.

Police then took her into cus-tody and subjected her to a drug test. The test returned positive results for banned drugs in her body.

However, when confronted with evidence, the woman told investigators that she was a businesswoman.

“I am a businesswoman, and I was delivering the shabu for free,” she said.

45,000 registered for in-person classes: ministry

More than 45,000 stu-dents had registered for

in-person classes during the first two days of launching the registration for the new aca-demic year, said the Ministry of Education.

Students, the ministry said,

could register for classes until the 29th of this month.

Students who do not wish to be part of in-person class-es will get transferred to the eLearning system.

MoE has called on parents of all students who wish to participate in in-person classes to visit the ministry’s website and register.

Housing project for journalists: Ministry awaits plan approval

The long-awaited housing project for journalists is

set to kick-start soon. The master plan of the pro-

ject has been completed and is awaiting approval, Bassim Al Hamar, the Housing Minister, told the President of Bahrain Journalist Association, Isa Al Shaiji, yesterday.

The Housing Ministry, he said, is expecting project clear-ances by the end of this year.

Upon receiving necessary clearances, the ministry, he said, will start working on the project at Hoorat Sanad, the project site.

Explaining further, the min-ister said, “the Housing Minis-

try plans to execute the project in multiple phases.”

“The project, in its first phase, will have 50 housing units,” the minister said during a meeting with the BJA board members. “The project is part of the comprehensive devel-opment march spearheaded by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa,” the minister told BJA President Isa Al-Shai-ji and board members.

The minister wished BJA members every success, laud-ing the national role played by the Bahraini press.

Al-Shaiji affirmed his read-iness to cooperate with the Housing Ministry, especially for ensuring social stability for journalists.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, yesterday received in his office at the ministry’s headquarters, the Ambassador-designate of Brazil to Bahrain residing in Kuwait, Francisco Mauro Brasil de Holanda. Dr Zayani welcomed the Brazilian Ambassador, wished him success in his diplomatic mission. They reviewed bilateral relations, ways to advance them and discussed a number of issues of common interest.

CAA cuts quarantine for children to 5 days• Decision valid for children from non-red list countries

Bahrain’s Civil Aviation Authority yesterday re-

duced the quarantine peri-od for unvaccinated children arriving from non-red list countries.

Accordingly, unvaccinated children between 6 and 12 years of age, reaching Bahrain from non-red list countries, will have to remain in quarantine only for five days.

The decision follows approv-al by the Government Executive and the National Medical Task-force for Combatting the Coro-navirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The latest decision is effec-

tive Sunday.Passengers coming from red

list countries, including those below six years, must quaran-tine for ten days.

All other COVID-19 pre-cau-tionary measures continue to remain in place. Additionally, non-vaccinated students should

complete a mandatory ten days distance learning upon entering Bahrain.

“This measure will apply to those attending schools, kin-dergartens, rehabilitation cen-tres, nurseries, training centres and institutes,” said the CAA statement.

Ban on catching, selling small fish and crustaceans

Bahrain announced a ban on fishing, selling and

trading small fish and crus-taceans.

The ministerial decision announced a minimum length for each variety of fish for selling in Bahrain, said the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

Accordingly, it is not al-lowed to catch Kingfish below 40cm, Grouper fish below 30cm, pigeon, Fisker, Shari, and Shamm below 20 cm, steppe and nettle below 15 cm and fawn, Calendula, Badah and Shrimp below 10cm.

The Maritime Control Department states that vi-olations will attract legal actions, including seizure of the catch and impos-ing penalties, as stipulat-ed in Decree-law no 20 of 2002.

Excavations in Muharraq reveals unique evidence,

says Professor InsollTDT | Manama

Excavations in Muharraq surfaced archaeological

evidence that brings to light the history of Bahrain and the region, Professor Timothy In-soll of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Universi-ty of Exeter in the UK said.

“Excavations on the hill in the cemetery of the village of Samahij revealed two archaeo-logical buildings – a 300-year-old mosque and a complex containing physical evidence of a Christian presence dating back to the 6th and 8th centu-ries AD,” said Professor Insoll, who is also the head of the Brit-ish-Bahraini exploration team.

He was speaking remotely via video conference as part of the lectures organised by the Bahrain National Museum on the archaeological excavation missions in Bahrain.

On the latest finds of the Bahrain-British joint team in various locations in Muharraq since 2017, he said, “Working in partnership with the Bah-rain Authority for Culture and Antiquities led to large ar-chaeological discoveries in the historic village of Samahij and

Muharraq.”Professor Insoll said that the

building unearthed is 17 m by 10 m, while the remains of its walls are up to 110 cm high.

“The edifice is more than just a church, but it’s a complex similar to other archaeological structures discovered in both Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.”

“Excavation workers have unearthed pottery and inscrip-tions, which indicate that this Christian community was part of the Nestorian Church that flourished in the area,” he said,

LIC International reports H1 profitTDT | Manama

LIC (International) an-nounced financial results

for the first half of 2021, re-porting a profit of US$7.46 million, compared to US$9.98 m during the corresponding period of last year.

The Total Premium Income of the Company was US$ 88.4 m as compared to USD 71.2 m for the corresponding period of the last year 2020.

LIC paid US$ 118.8 m as claims to policyholders com-pared to USD 230.8 m paid dur-ing the corresponding period of last year.

The total investment income

was US$ 48.2 m against US$ 45.9 m during the correspond-ing period of last year.

The results were announced during a board meeting held on Wednesday. Siddhartha Mohanty, Managing Direc-tor, LIC of India, has joined the Board of the Company as Deputy Chairperson and were present for the meeting through video conference.

As of 15th August 2021, 13 Consultants have qualified for MDRT, and three for COT this year, compared to 12 Consult-ants qualified for MDRT and 3 for COT during the corre-sponding period of the previ-ous year.

Major stock markets in the Gulf ended low-er yesterday, with the

Saudi index registering a second weekly loss, as Asian stocks fell on worries over rising cases of the Delta variant of the coro-navirus.

Fresh COVID-19 outbreaks fuelled by the Delta variant are raising concerns about the strength of the economic recov-ery globally.

Saudi Arabia’s benchmark index fell 0.3%, hit by a 1.3% fall in Al Rajhi Bank and a 1.7% decline in Saudi Arabian Mining Company.

In the kingdom, stocks were also pressured by declining oil prices.

Brent crude was down 71 cents, or 1%, at $71.54 a barrel by 0939 GMT, as renewed con-cerns about demand cut short a three-day rally, and as Mexico restored some oil production.

In Abu Dhabi, the index re-

treated 0.5%, dragged down by a 1.2% drop in Emirates Tele-communications Group and a 1.6% decrease in Alpha Dhabi Holding.

“Markets are holding their breath in the wake of the U.S. Federal Reserve symposium. The president of the Federal Reserve is poised to speak on

Friday, dropping a hint on when the asset purchasing program will be downsized,” said Daniel Takieddine, senior market ana-lyst at FXPrimus.

Later in the day, US GDP fig-ures are expected to confirm the direction of the global economy. The output of the world’s big-gest economy is forecast to be

higher for the second quarter, Takieddine said.

Dubai’s main share index edged down 0.1%, hit by a 0.5% fall in blue-chip developer Emaar Properties.

The Qatari benchmark lost 0.3%, with petrochemical firm Industries Qatar sliding 2.3%.

Outside the Gulf, Egypt’s blue-chip index gained 0.6%, led by a 10% surge in Misr Fer-tilizers, which reported a sharp rise in first-half consolidated net profit.

Emirates Global Alumin-ium (EGA) is weighing a

potential initial public offer-ing next year, sources said, in what could be one of the big-gest share sales in the Unit-ed Arab Emirates in recent years.

EGA, one of the world’s larg-est aluminium producers, is examining proposals from banks which pitched for advi-sory roles, said three sources familiar with the matter, who declined to be named as the matter is not public.

EGA declined to comment when contacted yesterday.

through a merger with a blank-check firm in a deal that values the combined entity at $630 million, the companies said yes-terday, as part of a broader con-solidation of the media industry in recent months.

Forbes, one of the oldest me-dia outlets in the United States, will merge with Magnum Opus Acquisition Ltd, a special pur-pose acquisition company (SPAC) led by Jonathan Lin, a former executive at billionaire Steven Cohen’s Point72.

The deal will allow Forbes to further capitalize on its digital transformation, Forbes Global Media Holdings said.

With print revenue sliding, the business news outlet has been doubling down on its live events and other key franchises, most of which have turned vir-tual during the pandemic.

Jersey City-based Forbes was founded in 1917 by B.C. Forbes, a business journalist and col-umnist born in Scotland, who later moved to Johannesburg and worked under a South Afri-can newspaper headed by Brit-ish writer Edgar Wallace.

the magazine in 1945. After him, the magazine was led by his son Steve Forbes, currently chairman and editor-in-chief, who made failed runs for U.S. president in 1996 and 2000 in the Republican primary.

The Forbes company was val-ued at $475 million when Hong Kong-based investor group In-tegrated Whale Media Invest-ments bought a majority stake in 2014.

The company was also in talks with other bidders, in-cluding a consortium led by

With its SPAC deal, Forbes joins other media outlets in-cluding BuzzFeed which agreed to a blank-check merger in June, and Vox Media, which is also reportedly pursuing such a merger. In a sign of further activity in the sector, German publisher Axel Springer said on Thursday it will acquire U.S political news website Politico.

The Forbes deal is expected to fetch $600 million of pro-ceeds and includes a private in-vestment in public equity (PIPE) of $400 million.

The unusually-large PIPE comes at a time when the broader SPAC market has been weighed down by heightened regulatory pressure and satu-rated demand, with companies struggling to attract the interest of leading Wall Street institu-tional investors.

Even for a city as used to vi-olent death as Kabul, the

scenes after twin blasts tore through crowds thronging out-side the airport in hope of evac-uation were apocalyptic.

For one man, a former em-ployee of an international de-velopment group with a U.S. special immigrant visa, the day began early.

He joined thousands of peo-ple around the airport hoping to clear the gates and get onto one of the flights ferrying in and out in the final days of the airlift.

He had been in the queue near the airport’s Abbey Gate for around 10 hours when, at around 5 p.m., a powerful ex-plosion went off.

“It was as if someone pulled the ground from under my feet; for a moment I thought my ear-drums were blasted and I lost my sense of hearing,” said the man.

“I saw bodies and body parts flying in the air like a tornado taking plastic bags ... into the air. I saw bodies, body parts, el-derly and injured men, women and children scattered in the

blast site.“It is not possible to see

doomsday in this life, but today I saw doomsday, I witnessed it with my own eyes.”

The man did not wish to be identified, because in a city now under Taliban rule, many asso-ciated with the former West-ern-backed government and civil society groups that grew up around it fear reprisals.

The Taliban have sought to reassure Afghans that they would respect their rights and were not out for revenge.

Kabul has endured frequent suicide attacks in the 20 years since the Taliban were first driven from power, and the city’s residents have grown used to police and security teams sealing off the blast sites and carrying away the dead and wounded.

Today, as the wounded were helped away or carried off in wheelbarrows, it was shocked survivors who were left to stumble over the bloodstained corpses of dozens flung by the blast into a sewage ditch.

An attack in Kabul claimed by Islamic State killed 12 US troops yesterday and

wounded 15 others, a top US gen-eral said, adding US forces were prepared for more attacks even as the evacuation continued.

At least two explosions tore through crowds that have thronged the Kabul airport gates desperate to leave Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power almost two weeks ago ahead of President Joe Biden’s Aug. 31 deadline to pull out US troops.

In a statement, Islamic State claimed responsibility and said one of its suicide bombers had targeted “translators and collab-orators with the American army”.

US General Frank McKenzie, head of US Central Command, told reporters in a briefing that the threat from Islamic State persisted alongside “other active threat streams”.

“We believe it is their desire to continue these attacks and we ex-pect those attacks to continue and we’re doing everything we can to be prepared for those attacks,” McKenzie said.

A massive airlift of foreign na-tionals and their families as well as some Afghans has been under way since the day before Taliban forces captured Kabul on Aug. 15, capping a swift advance across the country as US and allied troops withdrew.

The United States has been rac-ing to carry out the airlift before its military is set to fully with-draw from the country by Aug. 31. There was no indication from the White House that Biden plans to change the Aug. 31 withdrawal target as a result of the attacks, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters.

McKenzie said the evacuation mission was not going to stop.

I think we can continue to con-duct our mission, even while we are receiving attacks like this,” he said, adding that US forces would “go after” the perpetrators of Thursday’s attack.

A Taliban official said at least 13 people including children had

been killed and 52 were wounded, though it was clear from video footage that the final toll would be higher.

US officials have said there are about 5,200 American troops pro-viding security at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport. The attacks came after the United States and allies urged Afghans to leave the area around the air-port because of a threat by Islamic State militants.

In an alert issued on Wednes-day, the US Embassy in Kabul had advised citizens to avoid traveling to the airport and said those al-ready at the gates should leave immediately, citing unspecified “security threats.”

Islamic State is opposed by the United States and the Taliban.

Biden was in a meeting with se-curity officials about the situation in Afghanistan, when the explo-sions were reported, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The United Arab Emirates has helped evacuate 28,000

people from Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover of Kabul, a senior Emirati official said yesterday.

The UAE and Qatar have been instrumental staging posts for evacuation flights for Western countries’ citizens as well as Afghan interpreters, journalists and others.

Western countries includ-ing Britain, France and the US are scrambling to get the last of their citizens and protected Afghans out while Poland and the Netherlands are wrapping up their operations.

Of the headline 28,000 to have passed through the Emir-ates, some 12,000 were evac-uated by Britain, and 9,000 by the US.

Prior to the fall of Kabul, the UAE had helped evacuate 8,500 others although the official, who declined to be named, did not specify when these evacu-ations started.

Speaking to journalists in Abu Dhabi, the official said his country is currently hosting 8,500 evacuees on a temporary basis with most expected to head to the United States in the

coming days. Others had been hospitalised and were receiving medical care.

Abu Dhabi is not coordinat-ing any evacuations with the Taliban, the official said, but convoys to the airport were guaranteed through the US — although security conditions on the ground were a concern.

Abu Dhabi expects the oper-ation will conclude by the end of the month, the official said, coinciding with the August 31 deadline set by US President Joe Biden.

The baby’s mother went into labor on Saturday while being flown to a US military base in Germany. As soon as the plane landed, military medics

helped the woman deliver her baby in the cargo hold of the plane. The mother and child were then taken to a nearby hospital.

Each US Air Force aircraft has a code name to communicate with other aircraft and control towers, and the code for C-17 cargo planes is usually “Reach” followed by a number.

The code name for the plane that brought the Afghan family to safety was Reach 828 -- and that’s how the parents decided to name the child, said General Tod Wolters, the head of US

Of the 7,000 people evacuat-ed from Kabul who had passed through US bases in Europe since August 20, only 100 re-quired medical care.

Mauritius has welcomed the UN postal agency’s

decision to ban British stamps from being used on the Cha-gos archipelago, calling it a victory for the island nation in its decades-long dispute with London.

The vote by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a Unit-ed Nations agency focusing on the mail sector, follows a longstanding spat between Mauritius and Britain over the Chagos Islands, where London and Washington op-erate a joint military base.

“This is another big step in favour of the recognition of the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos,” Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jug-nauth said late Wednesday.

Although Mauritius be-came independent in 1968, the Chagos archipelago re-mained under British control, sparking protests by Chagos-sians, who accuse London of

Seven US Capitol Police of-ficers filed suit against for-

mer president Donald Trump and members of right-wing ex-tremist groups yesterday, ac-cusing them of being directly responsible for the January 6 attack on Congress.

The lawsuit is one of sever-al that have been filed against Trump over the attempt by thousands of his supporters to prevent the congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s November 2020 presi-dential election victory.

The latest suit was filed in US District Court in Washington by The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights on behalf of seven Capitol Police officers who battled Trump loyalists at the Capitol.

Among those named in the lawsuit are Trump, the Trump Campaign, Trump associate Roger Stone and members of right-wing extremist groups the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.

The suit alleges they engaged in an “unlawful effort to use force, intimidation, and threats to prevent Congress from cer-tifying the results of the 2020 Presidential election.”

“Because of Defendants’ unlawful actions, Plaintiffs were violently assaulted, spat on, tear-gassed, bear-sprayed, subjected to racial slurs and ep-ithets, and put in fear for their lives,” the complaint said. Five of the police officers filing suit are Black.

Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee, said the January 6 attack “was a blatant attempt to stifle the votes and voices of millions of Americans, particularly Black voters.”

“For months after the 2020 election had been officially called, former president Trump and his associates made coordi-nated and systematic attempts to lodge their false claims of

election fraud,” Hewitt said.“The lies of this conspiracy

intentionally energized white supremacists and violent ex-tremist groups and actively encouraged them to coordi-nate the violent attack on the Capitol.”

Trump has also been targeted in lawsuits filed by Democratic lawmakers over the January 6 attack and a House Select Com-mittee has opened an inquiry into the assault on Congress.

The select committee issued a sweeping request on Wednes-day to the National Archives and seven government agencies for records related to the attack, including communications from Trump, members of his family, his top aides and dozens of other former members of his administration.

Trump has consistently re-fused to acknowledge his defeat to Biden and continues to make unfounded claims that he won the election.

Kanye West is looking to shorten his name.

Born Kanye Omari West, the 44-year-old rap icon filed documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, for-mally requesting to change his name to Ye – a nickname he’s gone by for years.

No middle or last name was included in his proposed mon-iker.

The documents, dated Aug. 11 but not entered into the c o u r t system until

Tuesday, cite “personal reasons” for the change. A rep for West did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.

A judge must approve of the change before it becomes of-ficial.

Kanye’s desire to change his name was first acknowledged in a 2018 tweet from the “Pow-er” rapper, saying, “the being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE.”

Similarly, “Ye” is the title of his 2018 album.

He has said in interviews that, along with being a short-

ening of his first name he likes, that it’s a word used throughout the Bible.

Venus Williams will miss the upcoming US Open due to an injury, becom-

ing the third US female after her sister Serena and Sofia Kenin to announce on Wednesday they would not take part in the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Two-time US Open champion and former world number one Venus made the announcement in a video posted on social me-dia.

“Not the best news from Sere-na and I today,” she said.

“I, too, am unable to play the US Open. It’s super, super, super disappointing, having some is-sues with my leg all this summer and just couldn’t work through it.”

The 41-year-old Venus, who has seven Grand Slam titles to her name, said she would miss competing at her “favourite slam” and wished all the other players good luck.

“I am writing with disap-pointing news,” Kenin wrote on Twitter.

“Recently, I tested positive for Covid-19. Fortunately I am vac-cinated and thus my symptoms

have been fairly mild. However I have continued to test posi-tive and thus will not be able to compete at the US Open next week.

“I plan to spend the next several weeks getting healthy and preparing to play well this fall. Thank you all for support-ing me. I want to wish all the players the best of luck in New York.”

The 22-year-old Kenin, who also goes by Sonya, is one of an impressive crop of young Amer-icans in the game, along with Jennifer Brady, Coco Gauff, Jes-sica Pegula and Danielle Collins.

Two-time world champion Alonso’s race craft in holding up a charging Lewis Hamilton in Hungary helped Ocon to a remarkable debut Grand Prix triumph last month.

seal player, the Premier League side’s manager Mikel Arteta said yesterday.

The Gabonese international striker had an underwhelming season last term scoring just 10 league goals -- he scored 22 in each of the two preceding cam-paigns -- but Arteta sees him as pivotal to the Gunners.

It is no secret that Muham-mad “The Punisher” Mo-

kaev desires to stand shoul-der-to-shoulder with the elites of BRAVE Combat Fed-eration’s flyweight division, and he has a certain opponent in sight that could help him move closer to his immediate goal.

Mokaev publicly called out Irish standout Blaine O’Dri-scoll on Instagram, expressing his willingness to volunteer as an opponent for the latter’s plan to move back down to flyweight.

O’Driscoll fought at ban-tamweight in his promotional debut at BRAVE CF 49: Super Fights this past March, where he dropped a unanimous de-cision defeat to Jose “Shorty” Torres.

“Welcome to [the] BRAVE CF flyweight roster,” Mokaev wrote. “Let’s dance?”

It did not take too long for

O’Driscoll to respond to the challenge of Mokaev.

“Sounds good to me,” O’Dri-scoll commented in the same post.

The exchange between the two fighters took the attention of BRAVE CF matchmaker Gus-tavo Firmino, who left a “wide eyes” emoji in the comment section to acknowledge that he noticed the banter.

The social media interaction between Mokaev and O’Dri-scoll just goes to demonstrate the fervor of competition in the organization’s 125-pound weight class, especially that the bracket has yet to crown a World Champion.

England captain Joe Root’s third hundred in as many

Tests against India took his side closer to a series-levelling win at the Yorkshire batsman’s Headingley home ground yes-terday.

Root’s 121 -- his third cen-tury in as many matches this series -- was the centrepiece of England’s 423-8 at stumps on the second day of the third Test as they established a huge first-innings lead of 345 after dismissing India for just 78 on Wednesday.

His latest hundred saw Root join Denis Compton (1947) and Michael Vaughan (2002) as the only England batsmen to score six Test centuries in a calendar year, with the all-time record of nine, set by Pakistan’s Mo-hammed Yousuf in 2006, now in his sights.

And on a day when England mourned the death of former captain Ted Dexter, one of their most stylish batsmen, at the age of 86, Root’s 23rd Test century featured several textbook shots that would have met with the approval of ‘Lord Ted’.

With openers Rory Burns (61) and Haseeb Hameed (68), as well as recalled No 3 Dawid Malan (70) making half-cen-turies, this was the first time all of England’s top four had made a fifty in the same Test innings since a match against New Zealand at Dunedin in 2013.

England’s lack of top-order runs had been so acute they’ve failed to reach 50 before losing their second wicket 16 times in

20 Test innings this year.But Wednesday saw Root

walk into bat with England well-placed at 159-2.

England resumed on 120-0, after veteran spearhead James Anderson had ripped through India’s top order during a re-turn of 3-6 in eight overs to spark a dramatic collapse.

Burns was then 52 not out and Hameed 60 not out.

England’s 22nd opening part-nership since Andrew Strauss retired in 2012 were separated, however, before lunch.

Left-hander Burns had add-ed just nine runs when he was bowled playing down the wrong

line to Mohammed Shami, with England now 135-1.

New batsman Malan, recalled after England dropped the struggling Dom Sibley, got off the mark with a cover-driven boundary off Jasprit Bumrah and followed that shot up with two more fours off Mohammed Siraj.

Hameed, promoted to open in place of Sibley after his five-year exile from Test cricket ended with him managing just nine runs in total at Lord’s, had added just eight runs to his overnight and spent 28 deliv-eries on 68 when he was bowled by a sharply turning delivery from left-armer Ravindra Jade-ja that saw the left-armer - the first wicket taken by an Indian spinner this series.

Root, who made 109 in the drawn opener at Trent Bridge and a brilliant 180 not out dur-ing India’s 151-run win in the second Test at Lord’s, looked in excellent touch when guiding Shami for two fours in three balls behind square on the off-side.

Al Khaldiya and Manama enjoyed winning starts to the 2021/2022 season last night in the Nasser bin

Manama edged past East Riffa 1-0. The two matches were played at separate venues.

The results earned both Khaldiya and Manama the full three points.

In last night’s third match, Hidd and Al Hala played to a goalless draw for a share of the points.

In Khaldiya’s win, second-half goals from Mahdi Humaidan and Ismaeel Abdullatif were enough to separate the two sides.

Humaidan opened their account in the 62nd minute with some brilliant play in the penalty box. The influential Bahrain international received a perfect

pass from teammate Lazar Dordevic that put him in a threatening position in the area, and after one touch to evade his defender, sent home a low effort into the bottom-left corner for the lead.

In the 80th minute, Abdullatif ap-plied the nail in the coffin after being released in the box. He did well to side step the opposing goalkeeper and need-ed to just tap the ball into the net.

The result earned Khaldiya a dream start to their first season in the King-dom’s top flight, having earned pro-

motion from the second division the previous campaign.

In Manama’s triumph, Mahdi Abdul-jabbar continued from where he left off last season by making it onto the score-sheet to help his team claim the win.

The league’s top scorer of 2020/2021 converted a 27th minute penalty which he tucked into the bottom-left corner of goal for the match’s lone strike. The spot kick was awarded after East Riffa’s Husain Al Khayyat was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.
