It generally takes between 12 and 18 months to move up a maturity level and establish the organisation’s capability at that new level.There are no shortcuts up the maturity levels, though there are techniques that can be used to accelerate the movement through the lower levels. Ultimately the whole organisation and system may need to change and this takes time.

The P3M3 model is 3 dimensional including the 5 levels associated with CMMI1. It has 7 perspectives which are the main process groups associated with P3M. They exist within each of the 3 models and are the basis for reporting. The perspectives were added in the 2008 version.
In the 2015 version threads have been added. These are used to enable better systemic strengths and weaknesses that may be affecting all the perspectives. There are a minimum of 9 and up to 13 threads, depending on the scope of an assessment.
