PROJECT01CONTENT

This brief asks us to produce our own brief through the exploration of several stages of development. The development of a single word that will enable us to explore and develop a project outcome.The overatching aim is to investigate and develop a personal practice. The research should identify four practice aspects, content, designer for..., designer to... and designer as... Exploration of these four aspects will result in a body of research led work from which to develop a final outcome.

ABOUTTHEBRIEF

STRUCTUREDiscounting research for three other possible words, I chose ‘structure’ to explore and develop further.This word was particularly appealing due to its various interesting meanings that I could really enjoy exploring in detail.Structure has numerous synonyms that are perfect for initial research. Sysnonyms such as Anatomy, Architecture, Configuration and Fabric.

I began my research by narrowing down my research field to biological structure and architectural structure.I immediately found myself researching far more in to architectural structures. This is my reason for narrowing down my research even more to architectural structure / structures within architecture.

EXPERIMENTATION

I began my architectural research by simply sketching buildings from around london and then creating linear pattern from these.Using tracing paper I could create interesting ‘versions’ of these buildings.As the top image shows, you can abstract a structure until it is completely unrecognisable. You can create a new structure. De-structuring to create a strucutre...

EXPERIMENTATION

Alternatively, I began researching structures within architecture. Looking at the features of a building, not the building itself.Its surprising how many patterns and shapes you can find by looking around for a few minutes.The top two images are some interesting patterns found at the Imperial War Museum.I’m hoping to explore pattern more in this project.

The image below gave me inspiration for working with repeat patterns, all the windows and columns repeating for the whole circumference of St.Pauls dome.

EXPERIMENTATION

koalastothemax.com is a website i stumbled upon whilst looking for some online material to use for the project. This site starts as a circle and subtracts the shape by 2 every time the mouse hovers over it. This gives some great looking result. Creating structured patterns or simple randomly scrolling give interesting results.

I later found out that if you scroll for long enough the shapes become a picture of an animal... not quite what i was hoping but result if you stop 1/2 is raelly interesting.

EXPERIMENTATION

Celi Lee is described as a multi disciplinary artist. She creates animation, graphic design, digital collage and illustration. Her ilustrations (left) are beautiful and are the perfect inspiration for my research into patterns. I wonder how many of Lee’ illustrations can relate to architectural features.

Rachel Whiteread has numerous pieces of work exploring architecture and structures.I love her style and have taken inspiration from her work many times in the past. Her work is still inspiring and giving plenty of ideas for this current project.

RESEARCH

Im exploring patterns further to gain a grasp of the shapes, grids and patterns that can be found by exploring what architecture we see around us.

Looking at the Liberty pattern collection online I can see abstract pieces of fabric (middle) that can really give us a sense of narrative, it could tell a story. Is there any logic in the pattern? What is it?

What could be made from these patterns? Camouflage type materials and illusions?

I hope to further explore pattern by creating my own patterns from found meterial. Exploring the possibilities of pattern design and making.

Collecting interesting & inspirational images and patterns has given me a collection of material in which I can now experiment with to create my own patterns.

I am going to approach the pattern making both structurally and randomly. I want to explore the possibilities of the materials as image.

RESEARCH

Beginning with found patterns I attempt to create something new from the material I have.I explore repeat pattern in these images to see what forms can come from it. The middle image remind me of windows you could find on an old skyscraper. The thick black lines acting as window panes the image can transform into something else. I can imagine this pattern on a large scale, maybe even the size of a skyscraper. How would that look?

The bottom image is a simple all image repeat pattern. I dont believe it has had the same effect as the middle image. It is an interesting pattern but I want to explore some more.

EXPERIMENTATION

Alternatively to the last experiment with found patterns, these images are 100% my own. I created a simple lined pattern that I could print and manipulate by hand to create something really interesting.

I have always been interested in optical illusions, these patterns unintentionally become some really interesting and mind boggling patterns. Each layer of these images is an individual piece of paper that I moved depending on what kind of effect I wanted. I belive the middle image is the most effective.

These are some really fun patterns. I can think of some great things to produce using these pattens.

EXPERIMENTATION

I feel like I may have lost sight on the main point of development, architectural structure.This experiment came from finding the building plans of famous architecturally interesting buildings from around the world.These really visually interesting images and a my interest in fully taking advantage of the facilities at reprographics gave some great results.

By simply randomly selecting images and paper and sizes and layering images over each other, I was able to create images that were truly unique.These images are a true ‘mash’ of techniques. The precise, accurate, tidy architectural drawings completely lost in the overlay and the ink marks produced by the photocopies. I love the violent clash of accuracy and inaccuracy.

EXPERIMENTATION

The architectural drawings in the previous experiment were all different... what would happen if you were to apply the same technique of overlay and repeat to a pattern that stays the same?The answer is the images on this page.They are not as visually grabbing as the architectural drawings but they have a certain appeal. I can imagine this kind of pattern being used as fabric for soft furnishings...

The bottom image as a high resolution file, where you are able to zoom to a level where you almost forget what the whole image looks like. This is a really interesting thing to do as you see patterns that you could easily over look when seeing it as a full image.

EXPERIMENTATION

Reaching a certain point in the experimenting stage i realised that I will be needing to produce a final outcome from these patterns or something similar.

I did some more small experiments with the different pattern experiments and I have chosen to develop the images made up from the architectural drawings overlay.

These images were interesting and engaging.

The image on the bottom of this page is the one image I believe works best from the experiment. The image does have bad printing marks but some of the detail you find within the patter are amazing. Nine different famous building plans have gone in to this image to create the maze of shapes and patterns.

DEVELOPMENT

You can split the image in to six different sections. I believe this pattern could be made in to anything and be engaging to an audience.

There are four different sections shown on this page, each are really quite different. I believe I could act as patetrn maker and maker for this project to create some really visually interesting outcomes.

The bottom image is my favourite section of the pattern. You can see so many things, from buildings, to shapes and even type. It would be amazing to see if it was posible to perhaps create a type face from structures. Abstracting structures to a point where they are able to be used as type.

I need to think of where the project and I stand within the industry. Designer as pattern maker bring thoughts of fabric printing and fashion design?

I hope to communicate the message that there is a structure to everything and everything can create a structure. I question what a structure is?

I wish to explore outside my comfort zone and situate this project within the fashion industry. Pattern/Image making.

Engage, I wish to create products that the audience can interact with, anything from a piece of clothing to a magazine. Must engage.

Pattern maker. I wish to explore and develop my skills within a new field. Adding existing skills to new to create something great.

My first idea for applying my chosen pattern to an outcome is to produce a piece of clothing. I would need to really develop new skills quickly in order to ensure a good result for this project.An idea that reduces the risk of ‘low skills’ effecting my final result would be to produce digital fashion.Utilizing my Photoshop skills I could create a virtual collection of clothing, something I would not be able to by hand.

The bottom image here shows a prototype I made for the digital fashion collection idea.

I have concentrated my design to one particular part of the pattern print. I would need to experiment further as I am unsure if this is the right decision...

APPLICATION

Another way of applying a pattern to a engaging product would be to create a product that people would use. Products like diaries, books, stationary... ‘paperchase’ type things like wrapping paper.

This pattern is so versatile I believe it could be added to pretty much anything. I can imagine a whole stationary store filled with products only printed with this pattern on them.What an impact that would make, to see a whole store full with products from the same pattern.

APPLICATION

I found myself wanting to return to further explore pattern making within fashion.

The image on the left shows a section of magazine that I have added a pattern to create a visually interesting, slightly strange looking page.

I think a whole magazine with this kind of design in it would be really visually appealing and would draw the audience in to it. The pattern can be so detailed it will draw you in wondering what it is that you will find.

I am going to develop this idea and create a prototype magazine where this style of ‘pattern take over’ will be on every page and really ‘hijack’ the publication.

APPLICATION

The top image is from a fashion supplement magazine. The magazine is full of full page images that would be ideal to ‘hijack’ to showcase my pattern.

The middle image here is an example page from one prototype I made that gives an example of how the magazine may look.

APPLICATIONAs a continuation and

development of my idea to create stationary from my pattern I have created tote bags.The bags were screen printed and are a great medium in which to publicise the pattern and is an example of close audience interaction with a product.

The printing process went well and the pattern has come out on the bag crisp and clear leaving all great detail intact.

Could this be the first product in having a whole store of this pattern?

T HE BAG

Another development of a pattern idea. I have printed a four foot by twelve foot piece of fabric with a selection of my pattern printed on to it. The final piece of fabric looks great and gave some amazing inspiration to create some actual fashion pieces.

Why not make a dress from the fabric? Something new and exciting, big and bold... iconic.

APPLICATION

Yet another continuation to the fashion idea is to print the digital pattern/fashion images in the form of a catalogue. A true catalogue takeover.

Using the fabric made into a dress, hold a fashion shoot in front of an iconic building. Linking the iconic pieces, and using this photograph as an image within the magazine or as the cover.

The image at the bottom here is the final image. It shows an iconic garment, made from iconic fabric, photographed in front of one of the most iconic buildings in the world.

This photograph links all the sections of my research together as one.

APPLICATION

The final piece of the final outcome/The final ‘collection’.

The catalogue is the medium in which my pattern will be seen by the audience. It is a collection of ‘hijacked’ fashion publication and clothing to show a new and exciting pattern design.

I see this as a ‘couture’ magazine in the sense it is a collection of work that explores the possibilities of pattern and pushes the boundaries of both pattern making and fashion.

CATALOGUE

APPLICATION

The final outcome has morphed in to a final collection, The Iconic Collection. And it takes the form of a catalogue, bag, fabric, photograph and pattern. 5 final outcomes in one.I wanted to push the boundaries of what it was that I could produce as a designer and producer. This project has definitely been a challenge. It hasnt come without its problems. Some that were due to my

lack of skill in this particular area but I have also had a few unforeseen problems with production.I believe the project as a whole has been a successful one. I have managed to tackle a unfamiliar area of design and created something that I am really proud of.

CONCLUSION
